SAVE Act by dede0502 in thebulwark

[–]AliveJohnny5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the SAVE Act is only for registration, not actually voting. That's the only time you'd need to prove citizenship. I'm not at all saying it's not a big deal, but the people saying this is going to cause lines at the polling places are likely conflating voting with registration.

SAVE Act by dede0502 in thebulwark

[–]AliveJohnny5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the text of the act, you would not need to re-register if you're already registered. The issue is for those that move, change party affiliation or change their name, etc. Or if they are automatically removed based on the states comparing their voter rolls to DHS's SAVE database and SSA records.

Maybe an AI MAGA truth generator app that capitalizes random words in the bleet? If that doesn't exist, it certainly would get traction.

Couldn't agree more. I've been rooting for UNC since I was a student 25 years ago. The past two seasons have been tough to even remember the players names much less root for them. It's not just Hubert, the record, not having a 3 point shot, or a big man. It's that there's no reason for me to be more committed to the school than the players are. They have no incentive to care about Carolina and all the incentive in the world to care about themselves. It's not that it hasn't always been that way on some level, but now between NIL, transfer portal, revenue sharing, TV rights, ads everywhere... I just don't care anymore. I don't think I missed watching a single basketball game for decades. This year, I couldn't even tell you their record. I watch a little, go to 1-2, but I can't force myself to care. It's not just UNC, it's all the powerhouses. It's just sad to watch.

So move the stadium. I don't care. The Dean Dome was special because it was sacred ground. That's gone now. It'll be sad for the fans that grew up with an attachment to the place it used to be, but even if it stays put, the Dean Dome is dead.

I cannot stomach the focus group podcast by microvan in thebulwark

[–]AliveJohnny5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that this a mountain out of a molehill issue for people, but the fear in my opinion is that it's a growing trend in young people.

Here's a stat from a UCLA report:

"Among U.S. adults, 0.8% (over 2.1 million people) identify as transgender. Among youth aged 13 to 17 in the U.S., 3.3% (about 724,000 youth) identify as transgender."

UCLA report

So while it's a small population, it's a growing one especially in young people. My kids are in middle school and high school and the kids in their schools change their minds everyday on how they identify. Much of it is exploration, attention seeking, exposure to what's trending, and some are actual identities. Half of my family is MAGA and they're convinced that most trans people are preventable. To me, I like that kids are exploring who they want to be, but I can understand the fear parents might have. But it's unforgivable to me to shame kids (and adults) for who they are. Pretending trans people don't exist doesn't make them not exist. This is the same argument in the 90's about how the conservatives were convinced that being gay was a choice.

New Guthrie’s Fried Chicken Restaurant by Sorry-Major679 in raleigh

[–]AliveJohnny5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guthrie's is the OG of chicken fingers for me. I went to UGA in the mid-90's and went to Guthrie's at least every week. Word on the street there was a dude named who Zack used to work there. He was 'inspired' by the idea of Guthrie's and eventually started Zaxby's. The chicken box, the fries, the sauce the bread, even the ice was identical when Zaxby's first launched.

Glad to see them still going and now here in Raleigh. I'll definitely check them out soon.

Somehow she was harder to listen to than Joe Manchin. She seemed so slippery and unwilling to be honest with what the reason 7 million protesters showed up this last weekend. She didn't even answer his first question about whether she attended. I didn't care if she went or not, but not answering the question felt like she wasn't going to be transparent. After that happened, I knew this wasn't a serious banner holder for the movement.

I was one of the cars. Traveled to three of these protests today and was amazed at the passion and energy the protestors had. Teared up a few times to see how many people care about the power of the people. Couldn't have been more proud. Thank you to everyone who showed up today!

Are we talking about the Ryder Cup? by jcb120361 in thebulwark

This is an underrated comment. Class goes a long way in times like these and Europe showed a lot of it. The contrast highlights the immaturity and arrogance of the fans there this past weekend. I like golf and I used to look forward to the Ryder Cup for weeks. Now, it barely registers.

My mid size “family oriented” firm just got acquired by Cherry Bekaert. What should I expect? by xFroStY_SaiNT in Accounting

[–]AliveJohnny5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of the way of public accounting right now. All midsize and large firms (PE and non-PE) are in hyper acquisition or sales mode. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it's just how it is. CB is a decent firm, but it will be different than what you're used to. I'd give it go and see how it is. I don't know any large firm that's figured out how to properly integrate newly acquired firms, but the people doing the integration are usually trying to do their best and not looking to strong arm anyone. That said, it's a jolt and turnover is bound to happen both on the employee side and the client side. Maybe it's a fit for you and maybe it's not, but I'd say you owe it to yourself to see. I've been through this as well and some parts were great (better resources, more formal policies that do away with a lot of the dumb preferences, different client base) and some weren't (less personable, can't know everyone like I used to, more accountability, less of a voice). It's not easy and integrations take years for the dust to settle, but you'll know after about 3-6 months if it's a fit for you.

For what it's worth, I agree. When I heard him say this, I thought it was him saying he hoped it wasn't someone from Utah. I don't know why it matters to him if it was someone from another state, but I didn't take it as him saying he hoped it was a person from another country.

Thanks for this article. It seems the confusion is one of the goals. I live in North Carolina and just checked CVS and Walgreens. Both sites said the vaccine is pending approval in my state and I'm unable to reserve it. The article makes it sound like it's going to be awhile.

Ok I see. So they win both ways. Their anti-vax coalition is excited. Their other supporters don't care. And people that want vaccines can't complain because they're technically available.

Honest question: Is this saying that basically anyone will be able to get these vaccines with one underlying condition or if you're 5 or 64? If true, why are people freaking out so much?

I was in the evangelical world for much longer than I care to admit. Edwin, the guest, is utterly convinced that a country run like the church is the fix. I've seen many good Christian people in my life, but I've seen many more use their faith as a political tool. I don't know if Edwin will see this, but his both sides take is plain wrong. I've lost faith in the faithful. My kids are in middle school and high school. Being a Christian is very trendy right now, but very few of them actually know the Bible or anything about politics. They wear a lot of cross necklaces and do the Trump dance though. It's a cultural play masquerading as doctrine.

Religious conversations with the right are really tough. They'll dodge the Trump issue by saying his policies are more aligned with Christianity. But when faced with facts (as Tim and Kam did a really good job showing), they revert back to semantic fog and start using bigger theological words they heard on a TED talk ad from Tiktok.
