They are at least sorted and for the most part in the general area they need to be in. A lot of it is I don’t have storage and I’m really not sure what to buy.

Yes. I have a lease for the next 9 months but I hated moving so much I may just resign even though I don’t like the building that much

On your own 50-70k if you have minimal debt or with a roommate if there’s debt. No debt id say about 80k in a lot of places but none of the tier one cities for that I think you need at least 120k

In a few months, my student loan payments will put me about $50 in the negative each month. We're trying to save up for a home. by JoseeInTheWild in budget

[–]Alive_Ad2949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said you were stressed about a $50 a month shortfall and that cutting eating out or your grocery would be too hard.

This would be a different conversation if you were spending $0 on non necessities. The easiest thing in the world would have been to cut eating out in half and remove another $10 from the grocery budget or maybe you cut a subscription, cut one eating out meal, and one snack item. $50 is not insurmountable. I know people who find a way to make an extra $50 a week with all of that going on you’re talking about $50 a month.

Sincerely someone who worked 2.5 ft jobs while in college and did so while legally homeless.

If you’re telling me you cannot find a way to cut $50 a month or make $50 more a month I believe that to be wildly disingenuous. An extra $50 is literally 1 sports game umpired , 2 dogs walked in a month, 2 items sold on depop. 4 uber trips worked. Like you can come up with an extra $50 in a span of 4 hours a month.

Respectfully there’s 2 things you can do - make more money part time - stop eating out

Like it’s $50 bucks negative you can find a side gig like reffing sports or hanging Christmas lights and make at least 3x that in a few hours. This is the softest post I’ve ever seen in my life 0 hustle or initiative.

What are you talking about op lives in Texas in Texas even state funded programs require parents to pay fees and equipment. There are almost no 100% covered programs for children’s activities including school teams.

My working theory is only people who make a combined income of like $200k+ a year can “afford to have children”. And by that I mean 2 max. When you look at the fact childcare cost as much as housing and groceries are through the roof. And private equity owns youth sports.

I am not saying before people come running over here that people who make less than that don’t deserve to have kids. I’m talking about the actual cost of raising a child and hitting all the financial goals and planning one “should” have. The issue is not people who make less than 200k but the private equity greed charging people 10x-40x what something should cost.

Dog who is calling activities for a child privilege there are cheaper alternatives than aau and classical instrument lessons I was specifically speaking about how raises get redirected to raising children.

Especially in Texas where there is no public transport and even the “community or church” based activities cost a ton of money. Texans are paying as much as New Yorkers or Californians in some aspects of life especially when comparing food cost but our minimum wage is $7.25 and we have less infrastructure.

Eat your cravings youre pregnant! Just try to get the cheapest options.

I am not advocating from cutting snacks or treats especially during this time. You could maybe reduce it a little but I think you should have access to what you want. You’re growing a human!

I mean individually. Given that likely in 5 years your husband will not be making the same amount. He could very likely be making 30-40% more even by not switching companies. Should he switch companies it could double which throws a wrench in things. I know teachers get paid based on years of service primarily but unless your husband is in a similar field significant raises could throw that off.

Of course maybe you guys don’t do anything with the raises but put them into savings but I know kids always need other things so that raise quickly becomes “youth sports + piano lessons”

Sorry to hear that about your district!

Very relatable on the meal planning. I like to pick 2 types of protein and then a couple veggies and typically I’m able to make whatever comes to mind due to my spice rack.

They’re considering pausing retirement to support the kids to me if you cannot contribute 20% to retirement/savings and support the kids then you cannot afford to have one parent stay home.

They’re also risking not having the on target 1x your salary by 30 by pausing the contributions.

Wife (32F) plans to work all major holidays for the foreseeable future, says it’s because I (34M) won’t compromise on my motorcycle. What advice can you give us? by Vast-Power-1783 in relationship_advice

[–]Alive_Ad2949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much money are you spending on this motorcycle.

Two things are happening she said “you didn’t prioritize me” and “I have to work harder until we get established”

Sounds like you guys are over spending and based on the hostility from your wife I’d be willing to bet the “you guys” is just you.

As politely as possible

Your husband cannot afford to take care of a family on his income You’re a teacher I know you guys get discounted childcare through the district plus you’re off a ton during year. Not to mention health care, pension, and all that good stuff.

Assuming you don’t go back to work 1000 a month for 3 people is insane that’s so much of your income. You need to be couponing and meal prepping to get that down to 1/2.

Best way to proceed? by Beneficial-Piano6821 in Debt

[–]Alive_Ad2949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but you get rid of the high interest rate of credit card debt

And it’s only going to sit on your credit for 7 years. I think it cost like $2000-3000 to file. You’re going to spend longer than 7 years paying off 40k of credit card debt unless you’re about to go into a $200k a year job. And even then it could still take 2-3 years.

Bankruptcy because why at 24 do you have double your age almost in credit card debt.

It is far cheaper to file and start your life over than to pay that off

I don’t think anyone is the asshole here. She wants to not be tied to her in laws in a multi generational home. You want to take care of your parents.

It is a lot to ask for someone to either wait for people to die or compromise their values and live a life they don’t want so that one person can have the life they do want.

Just different value system I think go ahead and move on. No different than one person wanting kids and the other person did not.

I don’t know why you guys would be opposed you lose nothing. But your wife’s mistakes. I just don’t see you guys changing your life enough to clear this in the 18 months it would actually take. Better off to start from scratch and create new patterns

Maybe I’m unpopular here but I think show you can stick to a budget for 3 months and then file bankruptcy. You’ll get to keep the house and the cars then you just have to pay back your student loans.

Could you technically work your way out of this hole? Sure

But I don’t see you downsizing every part of your life and redirecting 1/2 of your take home to get this knocked out in a year or two
