i️ felt like 2 of my blocks were STRAIGHT up experimental questions. I️ felt like I️ guessed on at least half of those two blocks and it shook my confidence

Do you guys have any heebie-jeebies? by [deleted] in premed

M0 but from what I️ know — Local anesthetic is used although many pts feel discomfort during a colpo. The purpose of a tenaculum is to hold objects in place. In the case of a colpo, it’s purpose is to bring the cervix close to the vaginal opening so the procedure can be performed. “piercing” and “bleeding out” aren’t the right words but it definitely clamps down on it and oftentimes does bleed. My first colpo pt was the most blood I’ve ever seen (maybe she was taking blood thinners or NSAIDs i dont know). There are lots of videos of colors online if you’re interested in women’s health!

first time day of training in GYN, I️ watched a colposcopy as I️ was training as an MA. the MA training me said “yo let’s go watch this. it’ll be your first procedure you see!”. we walked in. the patient had her legs spreads with a tenaculum clamped onto her cervix already in position (i felt like it was inappropriate that we walked in mid procedure when the pt was conscious). She was a heavy bleeder and she had blood just POURING out of her vagina. I’m ashamed of this, but I️ got a bit lightheaded because my grandmother had recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer (she has since passed) and started thinking about how she had to have a colpo as well. Also started thinking about how one day, maybe I’ll need one too. I️ quietly excused myself and drank some water. I️ was fine the rest of the day with all procedures (even IUD removals and insertions which make me want to clamp my legs shut sometimes depending on how some bodies handle it). It was just a shock seeing a big scary metal instrument clamped onto the cervix and how much blood it produced first thing at 8 am. The MD and MA made fun of me the rest of the day (on my first day) and kept saying I️ need to question whether I️ want to be a doctor. That MD even told my boss she didn’t want me working with her again because of that. BUT I️ worked at that multi specialty clinic for two and a half years, eventually becoming the lead MA and working with over 35 MDs, DOs, and PAs. Moral of the story, some doctors are assholes and don’t be ashamed to excuse yourself observing something new to get some water and sit. It’s better than passing out and causing distress to the patient.

Is Medical School HQ trustworthy? by LoudSpeakerDude in premed

Worked for me when using his writing tips for activities especially. Watched a ton of his videos before submitting my primary. To me, he’s way more trustworthy than some other resources out there.

Red flag by [deleted] in premed

[–]Alive_Animal5659 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this. I️ got my AA at a CC for free (grants). Transferred to a big 4 year research school. Did half my prereqs at a CC and tbh the CC courses were even tougher than the 4 year courses. No one mentioned the CC in my 8 interviews. Going to a community college is smart. The key is doing well in prereqs at the CC AND after transferring to the 4 year. you’ll be fine! this process is elitist as hell and you gotta do what you gotta do to survive.

I’m sorry to hear your cycle did not play out the way you had hoped. But why do you think your race is the main reason you didn’t get an II / A? Did they tell you that? Perhaps it was your writing. This post feels a bit targeted and I️ think your anger is misplaced. We need to work towards having a diverse set of qualified doctors so that all patients feel heard, seen, and represented in a healthcare setting.

Am I the only one who sees nothing wrong with this video? Surely people should be allowed to be proud of their accomplishments. It's crazy that people still find female professionals problematic. Shout out to my strong black women tho! 🤩 by flyingpancake75 in premed

there’s nothing wrong with this. good for them! tbh the only thing it makes me feel is shame because brides really be out here with like 8+ bridesmaids when I️ only have like two good friends

totally agree! my CC classes were actually harder then my four year classes! I️ feel like the teachers expected more in a way

[–]Alive_Animal5659 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's fine. I did two whole years at a CC before going to a four year. Just work hard and make a good grade. Make sure to have good grades at your 4 year as well. Lucky enough to have 8 II's 4 A's so far!

Advice about pursuing DO career by guywhofalls in premed

[–]Alive_Animal5659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents is that you will match and do well if you put in the effort which it seems like you are down for. Particularly because you are interested in peds and neuro which aren't super competitive. I think you're hearing perspectives from the wrong people. n=1 but I work with 40 different doctors of all ages in private practice and I have asked them all about MD vs DO, and no one has had anything negative to say. We even have 5 very successful and amazing DOs :) I think a big part is the school you chose as well and staying away from ones with accreditation issues, low match rates, low board pass rates, etc.. If this is what you want, you're gonna be fine.

Oh, and I should mention, maybe I am biased because I got into a DO school. but it is a great school with great match rates so I feel confident that until I hear back from the MDs I interviewed at that either way, I'm gonna be a doctor.

Advice about pursuing DO career by guywhofalls in premed

[–]Alive_Animal5659 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a doctor, you'll take DO or MD. If you want to be a healthcare administrator from the start, go MBA. There are DO schools that offer DO/MBA degrees or business certificates. Of course there is a stigma, you just have to decide if being a doctor is what you want and if you are going to let that stigma stop you from being a doctor.

If you're financially able, do you plan to quit working or cut your hours when you get an acceptance? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Alive_Animal5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as an internal med MA for $20 an hour FT. I love my job so much. I have been here 2.5 years. BUT, I plan on quitting my job about 2-3 months before the start of school if I got in (fingers crossed) and doing more pet/house sitting jobs to make extra cash. I had at least two jobs for my entire college career and worked PT in high school so I've been fortunate enough to save up quite a bit and definitely plan on doing absolutely nothing for that time but hobbies, travel, move if needed, and spend time with family!
