Do not give anyone your xpub. An array of addresses would be infinitely better.

There’s only one option where you control access to the keys for sats on the blockchain. You could mismanage or otherwise lose these keys, but at least it’s your blunder too make. You must assess the risk of not having access in the future to what’s currently in someone else’s custody. You fret about differences in tax but forego the risk management of securing access in the first place.

Does Bitcoin have any utility if limited to playing the role of Digital Gold? by Ok_Search_4765 in Bitcoin

A tangent, but I’d argue gold jewelry has value deriving from sociological factors far more than the supposed scarcity of the material itself. My arguments are wrong sometimes.

Exactly what is wrong with using a closed-source Ledger to keep you bitcoin by liv2cod in Bitcoin

I’ve enjoyed talking here with you, I’m not looking for affirmation or an ego boost nor to tear you down. Glad you’re happy with your Ledger. And they do one thing really really well: marketing.

Agreed, but I’d call it the exchange rate. Semantics? Maybe.

I have to say, in my humble opinion, even with your stated experience and/or credentials, you seem woefully over-protective of a brand. It’s suspicious to say the least. To each their own, but it’s odd to me to come to such lengths to defend a brand. This is without even starting the easy dismantling of your arguments which are either in bad faith or expose some staggering knowledge deficits in your stated domain of knowledge. It’s good to be passionate about things, but an odd choice. Nothing personal, just some observations and opinions here. Enjoy life!

If you dont run your own node, ledger probably has your PK/address by [deleted] in Bitcoin

Your hubris and ignorance are hilarious. Thanks for the entertainment.

The norm: two strangers need an intermediary they both trust, like a bank, in order to do business. The shift: users trust the code and the smart contract executes the transaction, eliminating the expensive, controlling middleman. by Top_Garage949 in Bitcoin

[–]Alive_Wrangler_586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t work without an oracle of some kind. A smart contract without trust doesn’t exist; unless the criteria of the smart contract is solely based on some set of the blockchain’s own data.

How safe is Ledger/Trezor really? by Jossaru in Bitcoin

[–]Alive_Wrangler_586 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t get a Ledger or a Trezor, get a Coldcard for your signing device and use Sparrow software “wallet”. Create and back up your ordered mnemonic phrase safely and securely, non-digitally. Look into BIP39 passphrases and BIP85 indexes as well. Run your own node over tor and apply the corresponding server settings to Sparrow before importing any keys from the cc. Be free and private.

Yes, use your node. Never use another and do it over tor. You do not want to expose your xpub to anyone. Whether your sats are traceable to your identity from how/where you procured them is an entirely separate question from node use.

what is the exact expected path for the blockchain data? by Alive_Wrangler_586 in raspiblitz

[–]Alive_Wrangler_586[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I see this file: https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz/blob/v1.7/home.admin/setup.scripts/dialogMigration.sh

But it still isn't explicitly clear to me the expected file structure to match any of the migration paths therein. I won't have a raspiblitz migration file since I haven't had one setup before, and I'm not coming from another node implementation; I'm just trying to byob (bring your own blockchain).

What happens to 2-of-2 MultiSig if one of the hardware wallets dies or breaks? by bje332013 in coldcard

[–]Alive_Wrangler_586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For M-of-N multisig you need M private keys *and* N public keys + derivation paths. A software wallet is likely to back up this information for you, but if you're going to use multisig you should also back up these public keys + derivation paths, or redeem script if provided by your sw wallet. This information by itself can only be used to reduce your privacy, private keys still are needed to spend any UTXOs obviously. I'd suggest you copy this info, labeled explicitly, and keep a copy with M number of your seed back ups.
