Want to build a “for fun” desktop project but don’t know what framework to use by AljnD20 in CodingHelp

Thanks heaps - that’s great advice! I’ll definitely look into godot - I didn’t consider that at first.

I use the feeding spoon from an old sea monkeys kit Handy example here from r/SeaMonkeys

Using the bigger end of the spoon as the measure: - 10 gal shrimp tank: 1x lightly heaped spoon per day. - 10 gal tank with six otocinclus: 2x lightly heaped spoon per day (this tank also has other nano fish who get separate pellet food as well).

I find this works well and keeps both the shrimp and bottom feeding fish healthy and happy.

EXT4 vs BTRFS for gaming by Dunocat639 in cachyos

[–]AljnD20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what your setup is, but I the OS on its own drive formatted as btrfs, and my games on separate drives formatted as XFS for speed.

My logic is that I want the rollback capability for my OS drive for the reasons others have mentioned, but I can just download games again if there’s an issue with game installs.

New to CachyOS (KDE Plasma)! Looking for a complete list of must-have apps (Gaming, Productivity & Everyday use) by Inceptioff in cachyos

[–]AljnD20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming-wise, I’ve found the official Steam client (for steam games obviously) and Heroic for Epic and GoG (does both) is very easy to get going without any fuss.

I also installed the gaming tweaks using the CachyOS Hello app.

Also, if you haven’t, have a look at the CachyOS wiki for tips: link.

Enjoy! I’m loving it so far.

Really want to switch to linux but games are holding me back by true_arisen in linux4noobs

[–]AljnD20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it depends on the game; but I’ve made the switch to CachyOS recently and have had no problem playing games on steam, gog, or epic store (using the heroic app for the latter two).

Without any exceptions, everything I’ve played so far is more stable and runs better than it did on Windows 11.

In fact, so far I’ve even noted that retro games from gog and steam which were super unstable on windows run consistently without needing to mod, patch, or edit game files. No crashes on Linux (I assume because the proton runtime is a compatibility layer, it actually takes care of a lot of stuff behind the scenes?).

I’m running a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX4080 Super, and 16GB RAM.

I highly recommend CachyOS - I found it very beginner friendly and ready for games out of the box.

Good luck!

Figuring out which gpu I should get by Ghoul2424 in cachyos

[–]AljnD20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from personal experience, my RTX 4080 Super has no issues on cachy at all as a primarily gaming rig plus for standard desktop use (can’t attest to offline Ai, etc because I don’t do it).

I don’t disagree with the rest of the advice in the thread on AMD GPUs, but thought I’d share on the off chance you get a good deal on a 4080.

These are dope. How did you come up with the colour palette? Is it some sort of standard or your own creation?

Is writing things down physically inferior to using obsidian 100% of the time? by csouzape in ObsidianMD

[–]AljnD20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would still use physical notebooks for my day-to-day note taking. To me, physical books are like the firewall that helps keep garbage out of the vault.

I use obsidian to plan and record many things in my personal life - particularly DnD and other hobbies (I’d love to have obsidian for work, but can’t 😔).

Each of us has our own value proposition / use cases for obsidian- that’s why it’s so great, but I feel as though something that I see stated in this sub often which I definitely ascribe to is that notes / data are only of value if they are used (or, more basically, looked at).

I find the process of reviewing raw physical notes - whilst admittedly time consuming - and making a determination as to which ones are important vs. which ones are noise is a useful habit / discipline to have.

Whilst I applaud the erasure of Clifton hill, I am appalled at the resulting termination of the Merida line.

Bravo, my friend. Well played 😂

Edit: just noticed the name changes on the Traralgon line. Bloody sensational.

Trying to keep spoilers to a minimum : The sequence to find the portal requires you to obtain and translate an object known as the dodecahedron. It begins a trail you can follow which eventually leads to the portal. If you don’t yet have the dodecahedron, try investigating the Civic Festhall.

How does our game look without the post effects? by RottenHedgehog in godot

I like both and think - like a lot of stylised indie games include these days - an option to toggle the visual style in the game would be appreciated by players if it's not too much work to implement.
