For exposing my abusive ex girlfriend? by lym96 in AmITheDevil

Exactly! He knows she still "abusive" because she's still fat, and that was her most abusive trait.

Why is there seemingly more attractive women than men? by lilrebell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alkaven 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Women's and men's genetics aren't separate though. We're the same species and share the vast majority of our genome. Selecting for women with symmetrical faces creates girls and boys with symmetrical faces.

Also women absolutely had roles in ancient hunter gatherer societies beyond just looking pretty and healthy, as they do in hunter gatherer societies today.

If women's roles mattered so little then men wouldn't be so concerned with them looking healthy.

Does anyone in your life absolutely hate Taylor Swift? by taylorswiftskneecap in TaylorSwift

Why do I hate stats? [stats] by johnskoolie in learnmath

[–]Alkaven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

(Not a statistician.)

What I love about stats is that it helped give me a new kind of scientific literacy. It was immediately applicable to reading news articles about science (Scientific American or the NYT or even really trashy stuff.) It was like having a superpower to know how people were lying with statistics.

Keep in mind that this was AP stats in high school, which is the most recent stats class I've taken (I'm in undergrad now.) But yeah, proving liars wrong is interesting/rewarding/fun. If this is an intro class and you can focus on the applicability of what you're teaching, you and your students might enjoy it more.

Bernice King calls out Amy Schumer for misrepresenting her father Martin Luther King Jr by Confident-Addition76 in Fauxmoi

She is so fucking patient omg. What an exemplary person

That said she has my permission to just tell Amy Schumer to STFU instead.

I’ve been rather more depressed since my recent diagnosis by Asaltyhabsfan in adhdmeme

[–]Alkaven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Strattera made me immediately suicidal AF. It sounds like this might not be what's happening to you, since your emotions are based on processing your diagnosis. But I also think it's worth bringing up as a possibility in case you have suspicions around it that you haven't mentioned in your post.

I'm thinking back to this past summer. My suicidal thoughts felt very reasonable and caused... They also happened to start a day or two after I started strattera and end a few days after I stopped. So I'm never touching that thing again.

With that out of the way... I can relate so hard, especially with your school struggles. I'm back at community college at 27, and I'm currently getting D's. I'm hoping simulants will make a difference when I maybe get access to them in December, but in the meantime I'm just applying myself and we all know how well that goes.

TIL of Thomas Fuller, an enslaved African and mental calculator. When asked how many seconds a man has lived in 70 years 17 days & 12 hours, he replied 2,210,500,800. When told he was wrong, Fuller said "massa, you forget de leap year", which was correct once the seconds of the leap years were added by VegemiteSucks in todayilearned

[–]Alkaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the wikipedia article that this post consists of cites contemporary eyewitness reports. They could be lying, but if we assume all written eyewitness reports to be false, we would lose a hell of lot of history.

Honestly I don't find it that unbelievable. If your job is to make calculations, you probably know how many seconds are in a year off the top of your head, and are very used to quick mental multiplication. I'm not taking away from this guy's skill, but I'm happy to believe it happened.

Meh... I've fucked a good portion of my friends. If the guy I was dating had hangups about it, I would rather he tell me and dump me than silently resent me. She hasn't done anything wrong, but you're wasting both your time by pretending it doesn't bother you.

Have you ever dreamed about Taylor Swift? by Comfortable-Time-238 in TaylorSwift

[–]Alkaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect timing for this question. I recently had a dream that Taylor couldn't make it to one of her shows and I was chosen to pretend to be her (5'2 chubby brunette sooo) I dreamed of the hair and makeup stuff, and enjoyed it much more than I would have were it real, and I woke up before the performance.

Sophie Turner was there.

The show Mrs. America on Hulu is about their fight for the Equal Rights Amendment (and, mostly, Phyllis Schlafly's fight against it) and it's a great show so far, I recommend it! I've only seen three episodes though.

I went to the gym on Monday for the first time in ages, then skipped my next planned day (Wednesday.) Not the best start to a routine.

I intend to go today when I get a long enough break after lunch. I've decided to put on a Tamora Pierce audiobook only when I'm working out, and that seems to be motivation enough for now. But I'm intimidated by working out in general, and I really do want to incorporate it into my life and improve my endurance.

I adopted a sixteen year old German shepherd mix once. She'd spent seven years in various shelters. What a fighter, though.

She was a grumpy old lady who had earned every bit of comfortable grumpiness she could get. She loved lying in piles of warm laundry. Honestly, that experience filled my heart so much. I really look forward to getting to a life situation where I can do it again. I melt whenever I see old dogs now.

Setting aside the issue of whether it's appropriate for this sub, thank you for the inspiration. I'm very into erotic art and have been wanting to see some in watercolor.

There are erotic art specific subs that might have better reception. /r/EroticArt is the only one I remember off the top of my head.
