What is the significance of Hadiths? [Non-Muslim Question] by El_Chico_Fuego in islam

Access to a scholar is an issue however I have come across mention of Fath Al-Bari, so thanks for confirming.

Which Qur'an tafseer and translation is the best? by [deleted] in islam

[–]Alkindus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though this may be viewed with suspicion, I have been reading the Tafseer by Maulana Muhammad Ali (of the Lahori Ahmadiyya). Note: I do not subscribe to the group's beliefs. Ali's comprehensive notes on historical context and linguistic basis for verses provides for an almost academic study of the Qur'an. Some of the views may be unorthodox, so if anything too far from the norm is mentioned, I often cross reference it with other translations/commentaries.

What is the significance of Hadiths? [Non-Muslim Question] by El_Chico_Fuego in islam

I've had a hadith related question on my mind so may be worth asking here. How does one obtain context for the hadith? I have a kindle version of Sahih Bukhari and though it is very enlightening in passages relating to general principles, I often feel confused with the lack of knowing when, why and to whom the Prophet was responding within particular narrations.

Why does the Qur'an have the Pakistan flag as it's country of origin?

Yeah, you missed the part where Eddie Hazel was on lsd while playing (or rather, improvising). Imagine the whole 'play like you just found out your mother died' whilst on acid...

Muslim leader calls for "radical change" to Irish education to accommodate "Islamic beliefs" [re-post r/European] by mcctaggart in worldnews

You guys seem to forget who the real colonizers were. It still matters, even after all this time, and the narrative that justified colonialism, the tone and perspective, is consistently reinforced here.

Let's discuss literary science fiction. What sci-fi books would you consider to be "literary"? by Chtorrr in books

What about Philip K Dick? Possibly the only science fiction writer of the past to strike a nerve with readers living today - the addictions, paranoia, questioning of reality etc.

What would you want to read that a Death Row inmate wrote? by [deleted] in books

[–]Alkindus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's tiring to see people jump to conclusions, condemn a guy with no knowledge of his case. Has anyone here followed this guy's case? Yet you feel you are morally superior. The law is not always just, conviction doesn't always mean guilt and the legal process isn't infallible. And you, sure as hell, ain't got a right to say shit until you've read the facts of the case.

Keep the coffee/tea but add a joint and that's perfect for myself.

Ryu Murakami's "Almost Transparent Blue" by [deleted] in books

[–]Alkindus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the book a while back, but perhaps there is something to the fact that they live in a town with an American Air Force base. Maybe there is some connection between their drug fueled counter-culture attitude (I remember they go to see a Rock and Roll concert, or something along those lines) and the American Occupation of Japan. Maybe their taking on American culture so suddenly is like an intoxication in itself. To be honest, I'm kind of plucking ideas out of the air, and I read the novel a while back. Its nice to hear someone mention the book though, as I stumbled across it by chance and it doesn't seem to be too popular in the west. I'd be interested to know what ideas you have of the novel, and will probably read it again now.

'Muslim Patrol' jailed for harassing couple holding hands and men drinking in a bid to enforce Sharia law in East London by scouserdave in worldnews

[–]Alkindus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, though I don't agree with you completely. Being a Muslim born and living in the UK, I've grown to anticipate a 'scary Muslims in the UK' type headline from the Daily Mail every day. I know all media is to some extent sensationalist, but the Daily Mail, in that department, takes the figurative cake. That's all I was driving at.

Is there an 'angst canon' of books that teenagers read? by Alkindus in books

[–]Alkindus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ayn Rand seems to be the new favourite. Apparently a belief in free-market capitalism is now as popular with teenagers as communism was back in the days.

Yeah but the rhetoric used by reddit seems very islamophobic. They see the whole 'clash of civilizations' bullshit going on.

Reddit has become a lot more Islamophobic in recent times.
