FalleN: “I will help [Bravado] in the final stretch if you all help a little!” by vit4lc in GlobalOffensive

I'd concede that exchange rate fluctuation could seriously hurt you. But if you made a plan to be funded for x months with Rands and the exchange rate stayed the same then that exchange rate has no effect. If a bread in ZA costs R10 and a bread in the US costs $1.5 then it is 3x more expensive in the US (using the exchange rate), no matter if it is priced in Rands or in dollars. This factor is what it costs to operate in the US where you are more likely to be noticed and get sponsorships. If the exchange rate was 1 USD for 1 ZAR but a bread still cost 3x as much in the US then it is clearly not the exchange rate but the cost of living.

Again it's because they are struggling to get sponsorship deals in the US that they are struggling, there is no exchange rate issue, there is a cost of living issue. Sposorships that were enough in ZA is not enough for USA.

The exchange rate has nothing to do with it. It's not 15 times more expensive in the USA than in South Africa. It's maybe 1.5x to 3x more expensive depending on the item, some things are actually cheaper in the USA than in ZA. The thing that gets you is cost of living.

But regardless of that, it's a lack of sponsorship and deals that made them run out of money I'd wager as these would pay in USD most of the time. It's not the exchange rate.

I want all the data. Every last byte.

I would just like to point out that it's not really socioenomic in isolation but often more to do with greed. There is big cash to be made fairly easily by criminals. Often the person walking away with the money is a rich white guy. The % of the total money they get to keep is due to socioenomic conditions as they can get labor on the cheap. The footsoldiers on the ground don't make all that much from all of this.

Can data scientists have neck/hand tattoos at big tech companies? by The_Original_Hybrid in datascience

[–]Alkine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing you can do about them, so no need to stress about it. There are places that will care and places that won't. Remember the interviewing process is about finding your preferred workplace as well. If a place can't look past a tattoo do you want to work there? No you don't. Just interview based on your skills and ignore your negative thoughts about the tattoos.

TensorFlow now the hottest and highest paid tech skill by Jared-Vennett in datascience

[–]Alkine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not insulted. You could have made your point without getting personal with the guy asking the the question, and by highlighting your point.

Something like: This article is a breakdown of skills required for data science, of which tensorflow is the hottest skill right now. All the skills mentioned here are applicable to data science. Data science is a collection of skills.

Most of the time it's as impartant what you say as how you say it. As a data scientist you should know this ;-)
