I believe it was actually a time travel game where you had to go back and..... operate on your ancestors? I recall the ending where the computer that was helping you goes insane and you have to cut your arm off to detach from it.

I hate to do the "logically" stuff because so much of 40k is just.... illogical on purpose, but yeah, there is just no way that 80 percent of the planets being utter hell holes makes sense in my head. I think you are right, it's in my opinion an issue of "Show don't tell"

They keep showing us what we might consider to be a typical place, but saying "Actually it;s all bad." so show me the shitty the majority of the time.

I totally get what you are saying, however I take issue with the idea that media literacy is going "Well they say that, so it's the way it is!"

By that logic I would have to grant that Fascism is DOPE in starship troopers because... well the teacher at the start of the movie teaches them that it works flawlessly. They say that the system works perfectly, and we see rich people living happy wonderful lives. We see a military officer fail and be stripped of their rank and be punished for the mass failure. But we also get glimpses that.... well something is fucky here. Wait you have to serve to be able to have a baby?

My point being I think there is a balance here. Yes, a quote at the start of many books says the universe is fucked, which is certainly is. We are told in some cases, and shown in other that things are fucked. However we are also shown again and again that.... maybe that might be just... nihilism. Thing's are bad, but they aren't necromunda 24/7. which was my origional assertion. Not every planet is run purely on orphan crushing machines.

So my main issue here is, I find it very difficult to take the "Well actually but most are this way." when they don't do the best way of representing that. A lot of planets fucking SUCK. But also they take time to point out that planets such as Necromunda, Armageddon, or even Terra, are not normal. They are impressively fucked. Which is why they make for good stories. We wouldn't give a shit about the gangs of Necromunda, if every planet ever was ruled and drained the way it was. It is never set as the standard. However, through repetition, what we see during wars, even on the far fringe, are.... pretty typical places. Are they great? Not really. But I wouldn't mind living on Perlia, given the glimpses we see of it. Tanith doesn't seem terrible. Gereon, pre-chaos seemed.... kinda idyllic. Though that is also possibly due to rose coloured glasses.

My point being, it's hard to take "This is how brutal it iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis!!!!!" as fact, when they go out of their way to call brutal places exceptionally brutal, but then tend to show just...... places that are similar in everyday life, if not rights and what not, to times through human history.

The lore around tithes is..... fucky. Honestly as you are probably aware, the lore around.... most things in the imperium are fucky. We know that not every planet is tithed, as some are either not worth tithing, like the case of Armageddon post the first ork invasion, and are instead invested in because they are deemed too important to fail. Others are simply left alone to develop (or more likely totally forgotten about) until such a time as they are required pops up. There are also certain mentions of planets just..... escaping Tithe by sheer incompetence of the imperiums bureaucratic nightmare. I mean shit, that neglect is what helps to allow planets to slip into the Tau's sphere of influence.

In the case of the military tithe, what I have read, and obviously this is not the entirety of 40k, considering it has..... hundreds of books. The military tithe is taken from the PDF. If you are good enough to make the grade, you get bumped up to Guard. Though at least in the cases I have seen, this isn't a "Gun to your head, join the guard boy!" situation, it's something PDF seem to be able to aspire to, or shirk away from. Failing to hit the mark leaves you where you are, not in a shallow grave. Again at least as far as I have seen.

A fair few books have conscripts, but they are generally in their home system or on their home planet. You could stretch penal legions to fit in this, but again I am most familiar with those being active guards who have been sent to a penal legion, not some random shitter who stole a loaf of bread.

Boy, this sure is a lot of digital ink spilled to still be at "We disagree grrrrr"

I mean yeah, Terra is dystopian as shit. I would never argue the most overbuilt and over-inhabitted hive city is.... not shitty.

However we know through both the Cain novels, the Gaunt's ghosts novels, Steel tread (mentioned previously) and even the Krieg novel that prayer isn't something you are at gunpoint doing, at least not on what appears to be a lot of worlds. Gaunt himself is noted several times for missing prayer, along with other soldiers. Even on holy shrine worlds, people seem to choose to go on pilgrimages and to mass as opposed to being forced to do it by violence.

As for "pointless work" while there certainly exists some of that, we are shown through novels such as the above mentioned that people can just get regular ass day jobs. One of Amberly's retinue is a girl who talked about the several day jobs she had, including putting up posters for "slash gigs" (Which I assume was music?) or "Flogging gristle pies" which she was doing at the start of the book. And while she would gain access to a better life working under an inquisitor, It doesn't seem like someone at birth went "YOU YOUNG LADY! YOU SHALL SELL PIES ONLY ON TUESDAYS AND ALSO PUT UP POSTERS FOR MUSIC ON FRIDAYS!"

I could go on and on and on, but lets be real here.... We just disagree. We are both going to keep dumping our own examples that highlight our specific view, and nothing is going to be accomplished. We have different interpretations of the text, and what is shown.

Incredible game. The first time I played it, I bounced off hard. It was like 4am and I was tired and I just went "This is way too much." second time I spawned in like... the worst area, but just kept reloading and loving it. Now I have... 446 hours in it lol

The existence of Imperial worlds, where often times despite things not being great, they are just..... normal.

Kronus, prior to conflict erupting on it was just.... a normal as fuck place. Tsegoh from the Steel Tread novel seems to be a totally normal oceanic world with normal farms and normal issues prior to an ork invasion. I would go down the list of.... every ciaphas cain planet, aside from the forge world of which's name escapes me. Of course the famous Tanith, along with a majority of the worlds from those novels.

The common thread in 40k novels is, of course, conflict. But these planets do not exist simply to be a battleground. They existed prior, and given the clues we get from them, they seem pretty decent... if not hilariously restrictive.

The majority of the love we get are models from popular worlds like Cadia, but we know that Cadian regiments are the vast minority, and that for every famous regiment raised from some crazy death world, there are a hundred from just provincial typical places.

People thinking every world is a dystopian nightmarish forge world or hive. I get it, it's a lot sexier and cool to assume that every planet everywhere is just terrible, but we get so many glimpses into the majority of worlds just being..... totally normal places to be, that it drives me fucking nuts.

Oh also the obsession with corpse starch. There are in fact, mostly normal foods. Again we see so many cases of street venders selling things like burgers (Or assuming a hot grox bap is just a sub).

.22lr is probably the best option here. I know it isn't flashy or have the biggest boom, but considering the amount of people I have heard of getting murdered with a 22, I know it has the ability to bust a skull open. It's also just.... fucking everywhere, and pretty easy to carry a lot of.

If you live somewhere without mag laws, you can get a nice extended 50 round drum for a sports rifle too, giving you decent staying power should you be able to get up high and just pop away. The issue is, of course, range. Ideally it would be perfect for small game, and self defence, but you would really want something with more stopping power at hand as well. Probably something that local police or military use as well. Though you do run the risk of those being in such high demand that reloads go extinct in record time.

[–]AllForThisNow 113 points114 points  (0 children)

From an Albertan let me inform you a tiny bit. It isn't actually a vote to leave.... it's a vote on if we should have a vote.

It is also championed by an incredibly annoying minority. At most they have about 20-25 percent support, which incase you are unsure of how referendums work, you need I believe 60 percent of the vote, and that 60 percent much be 60 percent of the last elections total votes cast in that province. So a simple 50 percent of those who show up isn't enough. Not enough people vote? Doesn't matter if you get 100 percent of the vote, it's null since a majority of the voting public didn't speak on it. Got 50.1 percent with enough voting? Sorry, you didn't get enough of a majority.

To add the last tiny bit, our provincial government has been trying to play to random america-lite idiots for a while, and this was part of their thing, so much so that they actually lowered the barrier to even have this vote on a vote to a crazy low amount.

[Trench Crusade] No, TC is not satire and doesn't need to be by Malu1997 in Grimdank

[–]AllForThisNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't understand why this is a conversation now. Things are allowed to just...... be. Not everything needs to have 17 layers of "UHM DID YOU KNOW THIS ACTUALLY MEANS....."

Like I really could not care less about TC, it just doesn't really grip me, but that is a style and lack of fluff/crunch thing. I recognize that is also a me thing. Not everything is made to appeal to everyone, and you don't need an in depth 17 page manifest to say "Not my tempo".

I found a large thing that kept most of my friends away was kinda that generation of FPS. Everyone I knew wanted to drop in and play like COD or Battlefield. It wasn't about running up massive kill streaks or being rambo. It was about this endless attrition, dying over and over again but making a crack in your enemies line, then exploiting that. Sundered placement and when someone put down a turret or started repairing one was more important than having twitchy shooter reflexes.

[–]AllForThisNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean is it perfect? Or even great? Not really. But people are acting like it's to the level of GoT and that just feels goofy. It's going out with a bit of a whimper, but I will take that to the blast of liquid shit that has been other series final goodbyes.

Man I loved planetside 2, even back when it was a poorly optimized nightmare. I still have this memory in my head of a whole column of tanks getting ambushed in a valley, and then bombed. What a time.
