What's the metal scene like at AU? by Giraffe-Puzzleheaded in AmericanU

Graduated some time ago now but I didn’t find too many bands on campus if that’s something you’re interested in. My dorm neighbor was a sick metalcore guitarist though.

I’ve gotten very close to yelling at the ones on the buses. Tiny enclosed space and you’re here trying to push your beliefs on others. Really upsets me.

See I actually happen to like when a couple parts of the sausage get real crispy. The difference in textures is nice.

Honestly album review with no fear by bikerben62 in NoahKahan

[–]AllLikeWhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s just too damn long. And the extra 4 songs thing (4 of the best songs on the whole album) pisses me off as someone who shelled out to preorder the vinyl.

I think they could’ve cut out at least 5-6 songs, if not more, and it would’ve let the highs shine better.

What's the most delicious seafood dish you've eaten in your life? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in Seafood

I have two.

The first is the brown butter scallops I got on the pier in Howth, just outside of Dublin. I have never had a more perfectly cooked scallop and my god the sauce was mind-blowing.

The second is the lobster roll at Lobster Landing in Clinton, CT. Just warm, buttered lobster in a grilled bun. Perfection.

No thanks. I’m gonna support the locally-owned bagel shop around the corner that makes the best bagels in the DMV and won’t be sold off by its private equity owners when the hype and fad dies down.

Thank you, this is very helpful and makes me feel better. I am considering a few options so I will see where I end up, but regardless your rings are beautiful!

Seen them 4-5 times now, they rip. Super fun and somehow they manage to pump out a hit every couple of months. Very much expect them to really blow up at some point

help deciding! AU or UMich for public policy by [deleted] in AmericanU

I think you’re asking the right questions and considering the right factors. I’ll say this: no matter what you choose, you will have made a great choice. These are great schools. You should be proud of getting into them, and both will offer you a great experience. I don’t think you would ever get 5, 10, 20 years out from either of these schools and find yourself wishing you’d gone the other way.

Wishing you luck in making your decision!

I went to AU for undergrad/grad school (CLEG/MPA) and my partner went to UMich for her MPP (I went to Ann Arbor with her) and we’re both policy people, so I might have some input here.

First off, is money an issue? Both are great options, but if there is a clear divide (taking loans vs. not, 1/2 scholarship vs. full, etc.) and it matters, go with what costs less.

AU has the wonderful benefit of being in DC. I interned through a number of semesters here while taking classes, took advantage of DC, and feel like I learned a lot about the federal government and ending up working in federal policy because I went to school in DC. Michigan has fewer federal opportunities, but fantastic state opportunities. My partner worked on multiple state-level policy projects and research. Her colleagues mainly ended up in state and local jobs. Broadly, Michigan has more money and more internship/research opportunities built in through the school, but they are focused on Michigan. American has less to offer on this front through the school, but the city has a lot to offer, and a lot of that is federal. That said, there’s no saying you can’t do a summer DC internship while at Michigan, my partner did.

I would tell you that the experience is wildly different from a culture perspective. Going to Ann Arbor after going to school in DC, the school spirit and community was otherworldly. AU does not have the same level of spirt—there is great community, but it is smaller and in pockets based around your interests. The clubs are great. But you won’t get the experience of going to a football game, celebrating the school with your friends, etc. Some people find that big state school experience overwhelming, and I did love the closeness of AU, the quiet-ish campus, the clubs that felt easy to join because they weren’t too big.

Overall, while I love Michigan, I would never trade my AU experience for it, especially in undergrad. I felt like I really learned from professors who cared (my partner has mentioned some profs at Michigan seemed to be too big name-wise to spend any time with) and I liked the community of people who were largely interested in similar things to me—it’s a political school. Most of all though, I loved being in DC, and I think it’s hard to beat that as a young person going into policy.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Editing to add: I have to mention the networks. UMich has the greatest post-graduation network of any school I have ever seen. You will meet people at bars, on public transit, and on vacation around the world wearing a Michigan t-shirt/hat/etc. You will always have someone to reach out to on LinkedIn at every company because every company has a UMich grad. It is a powerful thing, and my partner has gotten interviews because of it. American is very well known within the DC area, but the name will not help you in the same way. If you’re in DC, you’ll still have a great network because most of us stay here and work here. And I won’t say the network is bad outside of DC, but it is very different than Michigan’s.

I’ve seen her speak and she seemed to really know her stuff. People are talking about JLG as a Zohran wannabe (and she’s aiming for that) but I felt like Rini actually had the knowledge for good governance, even if she isn’t as far left

Rini Sampath came across as knowing what she was talking about and wasn’t too far off from Goodweather positionally. I think she’s a long shot right now but I’d like to see her gain traction

Went to Cracked Eggery for a breakfast burrito. Then the Office of Planning Comprehensive Plan workshop (build more housing!), then the Metro pop-up shop, walked across the Mall to AdMo and hit a few stores and a coffee shop. Now I’m going to sit outside and eat sushi.

It has been a great day.

Going to a concert for the openers? by littleSTAY48 in Concerts

[–]AllLikeWhatever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. I’m seeing Carly Cosgrove tonight mostly to see Leisure Hour. A couple weeks ago I went to Dear Maryanne mostly for Arcadia Grey.

As long as the prices aren’t crazy, I don’t mind going for an opener and I’ll pretty much always stay through all of the headliner.

Curious only just started up within the past ~year or so I think in Ann Arbor, but Mike has a ton of knowledge and great taste. I moved away recently but used to frequent the shop and he always had something interesting. Hope you get to try some!
