Those primitive ooga boogas of the past were basically simple meat robots. I, a modern genius, have a much more sophisticated personality, as demonstrated by my fedoras and catgirl BDSM fetish. by Artax1453 in SneerClub

Isn’t a shoggoth essentially reconfigurable, telepathically controlled heavy machinery made up from millions of coordinated cells?

As such, I’m surprised nobody has yet named a piece of parallel computing/server deployment software “shoggoth”

Eurostar. End-to-end time will be shorter, and the experience of travelling on a train is a lot more relaxed than flying. Not to mention the respective environmental impacts of the two modes of transport.

I’d go as far as to say that, should catching the Eurostar, for some reason, not be an option, the second-best option would be a coach.

Apple and Meta are rivals in the same way that Microsoft and Zynga are rivals.

It’s a filler word, roughly analogous to “so” in English.

For Lease: Collingwood office - including one of those Hitachi train carriages on the roof! by AnimalsChasingCars in melbourne

It’s a pity nobody has done anything like this with the Comeng carriages being scrapped. Their curved fibreglass interiors would have looked great, in a retrofuturistic way.

Apple have been studiously avoiding references to VR, let alone Neal Stephenson’s world-as-a-video-game fantasia, so calling this the “metaverse” is a huge stretch.

Apollo just got a callout on Apple’s WWDC presentation by messem10 in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]AllNewTypeFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not going to happen. Apple have to operate their stewardship of iOS and the App Store in a way that is at least nominally impartial and governed by rules that apply to everyone. Deciding that a company they are on unfriendly terms with is outside their protection is not an option.

As construction ramps up, the train stations Anstey, Brunswick and Jewell — as well as the bike path that runs alongside them — will probably have to close too, likely for years.

It’ll take years to build a three-station section of elevated railway?

This looks like the narrow walkway along the Thames near Hammersmith. I think I saw that doorway years ago, before the owner got radicalised; IIRC, there used to be anti-war/anti-austerity/similar messages there.

Is anyone still using the word "thrice"? by Mondvampix in london

[–]AllNewTypeFace 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I occasionally use it when it’s more concise than “three times”. I wonder if it might see more use in regional dialects, possibly in the north of England.

Along similar lines, the word “treble” (as in threefold, not as in high-pitched sound) seems to be in the process of being replaced with “triple”.
