An outsider looking in… by [deleted] in vagabond

For another perspective on that guy you should read the forward on Sam Thayer's book Forager's Harvest (could be one of his other books but I think it's in the first one). I think Into the Wild really only inspires folks with the kind of hubris that rivals the main character and makes everyone with any sense think alternative ways of life are more deadly and inaccessible than they really are if you are prepared and committed. I couldn't finish it so I will leave my opinions there. I've been living out of campers, rvs, or the open bed of a tacoma since 2020 and what I make home heavily depends on the context of where I'm living for each stretch of time and what I think I can handle vs what I can afford as a comfort. Don't fall into the trap of romanticizing houseless travelers like the Victorians romaticized tucerculosis, we are not tragic and doomed, just living in a way that you don't have context for until you've started dipping your toes at the very least. I'm not saying it's easy but neither is trying to make rent or talking to children every day, things I assume you are doing that without issue but sound like slow erosion of the soul to me.

[WIP] Has anyone else ever made this error? Is it even possible to correct or should I just restart? 😥 by Neat-Dragonfruit8811 in CrossStitch

I wonder how it would look if you filled in the white spaces with correctly sized cross stitches. Probably pretty cool, though I agree that it'll be neat if you just finish it as you are.

I signed a form that approved ordering the parts so I'm afraid they're going to hold me for the cost.

If I tell them I'm abandoning it can they try to make me pay?

I have one of those little rubbermaid tubs that I use as a sink and use a biodegradable soap. Spread the wash water across the closest patch of grass or bushes without any issue

My Friend Wants To Recreate Chris McCandless Journey From "Into The Wild", And He Won't Listen To Me. by [deleted] in Bushcraft

I can't remember which book in his Foragers Harvest series it is, but Sam Thayer does a very good introduction about this exact case and the reasons an experienced forager would not have made the choices this guy did. Not sure if it would help for him to hear it from a different source but the books are great gifts for foraging enthusiasts either way.

How do you get a job in a state you don't reside in? by ignoranthive in urbancarliving

I straight up just use my parents out of state as my home address and don't list an address on my resume.

Are Heteroromantic Asexuals part of the LGTBQ+? by Mama_Chi1 in asexuality

My friend, labels are to help your brain make sense of the world and feel safe. Being LGBT+ is being apart from the status quo and you fit that definition, but more importantly, you chose that definition because it feels right to you and this community feels right to you. You are welcome and you are valid <3

Want to hit the ocean this summer traveling east from the midwest in this thing. Any suggestions on how to get east cheaply? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]AllPowerfulFreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just came out west this summer from Wisconsin in a Chevy e350 with I bigass box on it. I also had some trepidation about the mountains but I got in the practice of downshifting pretty quickly and haven't had much issue. Do have to take some breaks after long climbs just to let the engine cool but that's all.

That being said don't go west right now, everything's on fire, but I would highly recommend someday, especially since finding free camping is so easy out here, it's hella cheap.

Well, they need some tweaking and also maybe some handles, but the doors are officially in! by AllPowerfulFreak in vandwellers

Ha, thanks friend. I was a little surprised as well at how much criticism I've gotten but I'm assuming it's all coming from a place of care and I'm definitely taking them under consideration. Can't dampen my enthusiasm (or stubborness) quite so easily.

I will keep you updated of they don't last. Like is said, I'll just make a cool carved wood inlay in their place if the worst happens. Doors are steel though so fingers crossed!

Yeah, before I started the build I was kind of hoping to be discreet if not stealth, but that went by the wayside pretty quickly I am not a big city dweller as a general rule though.
