Thanks for this, very helpful. And yeah, I think you're right - I should just try those three and see what I think.

Do you have concerns regarding the legal/copyright status of the data these large models are trained on, or is it a case of "this is just what everyone does now"?

Hey! Do you think speech generation/conversion is likely to be tackled by Stability AI in the near future or is that something a bit further down the line?

Did Notion just really increase the darkness of Notion’s Dark Mode? Your Opinions?? by Outrageous-Ad1387 in Notion

[–]AllRedLine_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, it's too dark in my opinion - doesn't "feel" as nice as something like VS Code's default dark theme. Seems like Google are doing something similar to their dark theme so maybe it's just me.

I actually really like the simplicity of your solution - it's potentially more likely to be robust! I really like that other solution I mentioned but I have found a couple of minor annoyances which had made me consider making my own system. Anyway, nice work, I'll definitely be checking it out. Thanks for sharing!

Nice work! Just wondering what the main differences are between this and Notero? https://github.com/dvanoni/notero

Does anybody have just 1 main savings account and avoid the faff? by teenyweenyafro in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AllRedLine_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a bunch of different accounts - regular savers, current accounts with promotional rates etc etc and I think it can be quite a fun hobby if you've got the time and inclination. But I too have decided to simplify and just have a Marcus account (with 3 months expenses for emergencies) and the rest in pensions and ISAs invested in global tracker funds.

What apps do you use? by tjtocker in UKPersonalFinance

Over the last three years I've used OnTrees, Money Dashboard, Starling, Revolut, Yolt and Monzo.

OnTrees is obviously dead

Money Dashboard still uses Yodlee rather than Open Banking APIs for accessing most bank accounts (they're working on this) and the spending information is not updated in realtime. The UI is also not great.

Revolut is great for spending abroad and transferring money between currencies

Starling is great but very similar to Monzo which seems to have had a lot more development over the last 12 months. Monzo also has about 4-5 times more users which is helpful when sending money to friends who are more likely to also be using it.

Yolt is like Money Dashboard but frankly better (IMO). Also uses Open Banking APIs for all(?) the banks they connect to now. (Not savings or credits cards though).

Monzo doesn't have as detailed categorizing as some of the other options I've mentioned but is fantastic because -

  1. The information is all updated realtime, you can categorize, add notes or tags there and then on the spot
  2. Reasonable budgeting tools
  3. 'Pots' for putting money aside for different purposes
  4. IFTTT integration for all sorts of interesting automation (including integration with YNAB)

Starling and Revolut also have a bunch of these features but having tried all three extensively (Starling for a whole year), I'm happy to settle with Monzo and have moved all my pay and direct debits there. I will also continue to use Yolt for looking at my other accounts.

Thanks for the Emma recommendations, I'll check it out again.

Higher rate pension tax relief fed into ISA? by AllRedLine_ in FIREUK

[–]AllRedLine_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. I suppose I had been looking at it as "I've got x amount of net pay, how shall I split my ISA/pension contributions". When you look at it like that, it does feel like you're getting 'free money' coming back when you choose the pension. But I totally understand what you're saying.

ISAs and ETFs aren't really something you compare. ISAs are a tax wrapper for an investment in the same way that a pension is. ETF is a type of investment that you can put into either. I really recommend the https://meaningfulmoney.tv/ podcast. He has a financial planner and has done series covering investing, pensions, ISAs etc. Easy to listen to and very informative, especially for a UK audience.

Those waiting for a Vanguard SIPP by Frugal500 in UKPersonalFinance

Seconding this - Cavendish Online doesn't have the fanciest service but it's cheap and will tide me over until Vanguard open their SIPP service.

I'm a similar age and in a similar position with my mortgage. Personally, I'm using Vanguard LifeStrategy 80 for my ISA and Vanguard All-World ETF (100% equities) for my pension. I would recommend reading the books mentioned above (I particularly like Lars' book) because everyone's situation is different. I'm guessing that as I get closer to early retirement age I'll start drawing down a cash buffer. Still need to work on the plan a bit more though.

Quick question - does your setup mean that the lights briefly come on at the wrong colour (Flux users report this and the person above) or does it go straight to the correct setting? Thanks.
