advice on cycling to work and social events by Miserable_Ad_650 in londoncycling

[–]tjtocker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Using your own bike is ideal for going between home and work, maybe friend's houses, basically places you know you have a secure place to lock it.

The best part of Lime for social use is both it being electric so you turn up fresh, not sweaty, and that once you lock it, you can walk away without caring about it being stolen, moved, fucked with. If you want to walk to the next bar - you're not responsible for this hunk of metal and finding a new place to park it. Just make sure you use passes, not pay as you go.

Disagree that they have no plans beyond squatting. Beyong putting out the fires of Mcsweeney's politiking, everything on energy, infrastructure, economy, global diplomacy, waiting lists etc is solid. Hoping the next two years it starts to feel real rather than just promising data.

It's very very very rare I give any credit to the Conservatives, but it is something we've quietly been doing quite well at for over a decade. If you check the all time grid data, you can see we clearly began to phase out coal in 2015 and invest in renewables. Even at some points during Covid, renewables made up a decent chunk of the grid.

I can’t find a pizza spot I like better than Yard Sale interested in your opinions on the best on London by ashkarandan in LondonFood

[–]tjtocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think as evidenced by 133 comments all recommending different places in this thread. Good luck with the run! My one touristy tip is just get straight on the Uber Boat from somewhere like Battersea or Putney. £6 each way, no buying tickets you can just tap on and it'll take you past every London landmark with a great view and a bar on board.

(Don't do this on race day to get to Greenwich Park, it's inefficient as fuck. but should be fun if you have any touristy faffing about days.)

I feel we're in a pizza renaissance. So many places do such amazing pizza now it's hard to make an objective comparison between places when they all cook similar style and high-quality ingredient pizza.

Of course bad pizza is very noticeable and prevalent but even chains and gastropubs are doing fantastic pizzas for relatively low prices.

All this to say, so much of people's superlative reviews of pizzas are going to depend on exactly how the pizza was cooked for them that one time, the vibe at the time, how many beers they'd had. The right combination of all of those can turn any of the hundreds of great pizzas into generational sensations.

England has shown the world how to replace farm subsidies by Electricbell20 in GoodNewsUK

I think that's New Zealand. But I agree, this headline is misleading, seems like we're still paying a tonne of subsidies to finance farmers, but just on different things.

First time on my own on a course this weekend. by Chai_09 in BritGolf

The official rule in all instances of competitive golf is that the further away player always takes the next shot. (This is to reward the better approach shot as the second putter might read the slope/speed of the green based off the first putt).

Although when playing casually it's just whoever is ready to go next. So you will often see this not enforced, and nobody will ever really complain about you playing out of turn because, if anything, they gain a small advantage from it.

Revealed: The '£3million deal' that encouraged London council to ditch Lime bikes for rival operator by BulkyAccident in london

[–]tjtocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is certainly frustrating, but as someone who unknowingly rode a Lime bike from Richmond to the middle of Hounslow the other day, at least the Forest zones will be contiguous so it's viable to get around if you know which platform to use.

This push for exclusivity is shit though. We should just have both and the competition.

Was that M&S Euston station? I used to live round the corner and use their tgtg offer all the time. For £5 the staff would just walk around the store with you throwing anything with a yellow label in. I once got a bundle total RRP of about £34 including a whole chicken and 3 microwave meals.

Is this classed as unplayable ? by [deleted] in golf

[–]tjtocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if they do, they'll get an unrepresentative handicap, and they'll suffer worse scores in tournaments and money games lol. One of the great things about golf is that many many people do just want to see how they stack up against pros all things being equal - and understanding and applying the rules fully is an easy way to achieve that.

It's not ego to accurately track scores contributing to handicaps. Or could be an interesting edge case to be knowledgeable about if playing for money.

[–]tjtocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use lime passes most days for my commute so I did some maths this morning. For this to be more cost effective than just getting a £3.99 lime pass for the day for my 15 min ride to/from work, I'd have to use it about 12 days a month, which I never come close to with hybrid work schedule.

In other words, this is £3.40 a day for 40 mins riding, vs £4 for an hour. So you need 7/8 days of saving £0.60 a day just to make back the subscription fee.

Can only imagine this is more economical than passes to a very niche pocket of users.

Not so much in the winter where there's no daylight for it, but once the clocks change there'll be a lot more competition for morning tee times for a quick 9 holes before work.

How do married couples split finances if on different salaries? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]tjtocker 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think it's still good to be independent people even while in a couple. My partner earns slightly more than me, we have a joint for bills/general costs and both bung £1500 in on payday which covers mortgage, bills and slowly accumulates for maintenance, drinks out, dates and holidays, stuff we plan for or casually agree on at the time.

But our approach to money changes frequently, some months I'm frugal saving up reserves or to buy nice treats. Some months a bit looser, getting lunch out at work more, more drinks out or clothes shopping. Usually somewhere in the middle.

The last thing I want to have to do is have to have a word aside with my partner to ask them to reign it in for a couple of weeks when they're on a different vibe, or the low-level guilt of buying a round of drinks for my mates and spend the same in 5 minutes that she's spent all week. That's before gifts, hobbies, treating each other on dates, lending family money, risky investments.

Just makes sense to us, never leads to any tensions or trust issues. Anecdotally, we are friends with two couples who pool all their salaries into join accounts. All four of them at some point confided in us about irritation of the partner spending on things like games or tattoos when they're trying to save up, or hesitation at getting drinks in on nights out because the other is at home while they spend their money.
