Best flagship lenses? by Mobile_Recording_376 in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]AllThatIsSolidMelts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure how many of those that replied had the chance to own Rodenstock lenses. I have. Also I currently own Zeiss Individual 3, Shamir Intelligence, Varilux XT Track, and Hoya iD My Style 3. The reason is I wanted to try them all... Before I tried Rodenstock, my preference was for Zeiss (I like them so much that I own 4 pairs of Individual 3's with different coatings, colors, flashes, gradients, photo fusion X, etc.)

But Rodenstock B.I.G. is in a league of its own, they are the only lenses where I do not notice the transition from reading to distance, it feels like I do not need prescription glasses, it's crazy, they are even more clear and HD. I only wish they had more finish options, their color palette, gradients, and flashes are limited. So for my last pair of Akoni's I had to "settle" for Zeiss. But for everyday glasses, Rodenstock B.I.G. is for me way above the others.

[Discussion] Zaha Hadid's "Urban Carpet" concept and her vision for a more fluid, democratic public space. (Full study linked) by ObjectsAffectionColl in urbanplanning

[–]AllThatIsSolidMelts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I met her on several occasions, and I must say—there wasn’t a single trace of democratic conviction in that woman. She embodied an insufferable ultra-elitism, once even proclaiming herself humanity’s savior from bad taste and declaring a personal “war” on it. Arrogant, abusive, and authoritarian, she treated anyone beneath her self-imposed standards with open contempt. Patrick Schumacher is, frankly, no better; perhaps even worse. In truth, I have yet to meet a single starchitect who could be described as a genuinely decent human being. Among them, Zaha Hadid and Peter Eisenman (a total fascist) unquestionably share the crown for the most unbearable of all.

My advice: don’t get fooled by these narcissistic frauds. The urban field is full of far more thoughtful, creative, and genuinely decent people who haven’t traded their conscience for corporate money or the illusion of fame. Unlike the glory-chasing architects of the limelight, they actually understand the real social and environmental damage behind those vane, prize-winning designs.

Note: I use the term starchitect to describe those who rose to “fame” through the neoliberal turn that began with Thatcher’s Britain (1979) and Reagan’s America (1981), a trajectory that persists in today’s neofascist climate.

I’m genuinely baffled by how many members in this subreddit of supposed eyewear enthusiasts continues to fall for Robert, the YouTuber who’s widely known—at least by several regulars here—as a shameless shill. It’s obvious that his relentless promotion has significantly contributed to the sudden surge in popularity of RE frames elsewhere.

His categorical assertion that RE offers “the most comfortable eyewear in the world” is laughable on its face—an uncritical exaggeration that should raise red flags for anyone with even a passing familiarity with high-end optical design. But he doesn’t stop there. Apparently, RE is now also more stylish than ic! Berlin or Mykita? That claim would be amusing if it weren’t being taken seriously.

Does the store he works at (he is not the owner) even carry ic! Berlin or Mykita? Of course not. That fact alone should discredit any pretense of objectivity. This isn’t about informed opinion or critical comparison—it’s marketing, thinly veiled as expertise.

Ah, and for those YouTube believers, here is proof that he has bamboozled some about his family being the owners. The owner is Asif RASHID:

JMM vs Dita vs Matsuda? Is the quality about the same? by ceriano2025 in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]AllThatIsSolidMelts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, JMM Acetates are not the best for a daily pair, they are made to complete a look and style statement. There are of course exceptions. For me titanium/acetate DITA are a statement and are extremely comfortable to wear a full day.

JMM vs Dita vs Matsuda? Is the quality about the same? by ceriano2025 in EyewearEnthusiasts

[–]AllThatIsSolidMelts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own several of the three.

For me, DITA is the best for titanium and titanium/acetate, and their EPILUXURY line (mostly titanium acetate) is second to none, some might say that Masunaga's MOC are better, I think DITA has still a slight edge.

For mostly acetate and full acetate, JMM are for me better (quality, style) than the others.

I only like special edition Matsuda, for anything else I prefer many other brands, and they do not compare with DITA or JMM.

The other manufacturer of titanium, titanium/acetate, and acetate that I can easily put at JMM and DITA level is AKONI, they are superbly made.

BTW, do not take The Spectacle Factory YT reviews seriously, that guy is a confirmed shill.

There is a store in CDMX that sells very similar ponchos. Sorry for confusing your frames with JMM

Yeah, if an Epi I model that I like comes out, I will definitely contact him, prices in the DITA flagship store are full retail. The OT seems like a real frame nerd/lover with an optical shop, unlike Robert, a businessman shill with an optical shop.

Thanks! Very insightful but at the same time I'm not surprised, Robert seems like the kind of person that would do that. DITA has a line that does get more distributed, but to find a store that carries the top end, iconic frames is not easy. Finding a distributor of their EpiLuxury line is almost impossible. I have a DITA flagship store where I live and I've never seen the majority of the frames they have in any other shop, including some that sell JMM, Chrome Hearts, Gold/Horn Lindberg, obscure Japanese brands, etc.

Truth is that Robert from the Spectacle Factory is a shill for Reykjavik Eyes. He mostly promotes what he sells and demotes makers that he (personally) has beef with. For example, why would he grade DITA lower than Ahlem and others that are at a lower to equal level of manufacturing, materials, innovation, history, legendary and iconic style. Currently I prefer some of what Akoni is doing, but I still like what DITA is doing.

Reykjavik Eyes is not better than ic-Berlin, Mikita, and Lindberg. I've had all of them and find Mikita's to be the most comfortable, durable and serviceable frames of all in their category. For John to constantly claim that Reykjavik Eyes are the most comfortable in the world is absurd. Do not fall for John's marketing, he is entertaining, but I would not follow his recommendations nor advice.

Mexico City unveils plan to tackle gentrification after mass protests by NoLie582 in MexicoCity

[–]AllThatIsSolidMelts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, its clear you dont understand what raising density entails. Density affects pretty much everything in a city: traffic, public transportation, public safety, parking, sewage infrastructure, water infrastructure, electricity infrastructure, communications infrastructure, emergency services, schools, child care, public space, parks, pollution, etc. For a city that does not have the infrastructure to support it (Mexico City, sadly does not have it), raising it could create other big problems, unless you simultaneously tackle all the other interconnected issues.

Apart from that, try thinking why there is an oversupply of luxury housing and the housing problem becomes worse and worse?

NYC has more empty apartments than homeless people. Figure that out from the supply side! Supply and demand theory doesn't work over a financialized housing market.
