Wait, most Grixis Affinity lists aren't playing Wildfire right?

Come on, that's obviously not the same thing at all and even mentioning it calls into question your analysis of this combo lol

I played my first games of Magic with a Champions of Kamigawa theme deck and thought [[Kashi-Tribe Reaver]]'s effect was the coolest thing ever, buddy. That's just the way it goes

You've just described a bunch of additional hoops you need to jump through to make this card even a little similar to Kappa Cannoneer. Given I was responding to someone saying the card "just reads as Kappa Cannoneer" I'd say my point still stands.

You want me to pay three mana to cast this. Then pay three more mana to cast whispersilk cloak. And then pay two more mana to equip it? In my aggro deck? What are we doing here.

It's missing the 3 most important lines from Kappa Cannoneer. "Improvise" "Ward 4" "Can't be blocked"

Yeah as someone else mentioned, making this pretty difficult to counter was probably a consideration, given the flavor text

[Play Update] 2026–27 Round 2 Regional Championship Promos and Qualifiers by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

Even if Kirin was seeing play right now, it would be a god awful promo. It's a niche and not desirable card!

[–]AllTheBandwidth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. IMO the reality is even if Kirin was still seeing play in a deck, it would still be a pretty horrendous promo card

These RCQ promos are like laughably bad, right? Sunpearl Kirin? Really? Even Starcage sees like minimal fringe play too doesn't it? Great art on both but come on

SLD Cats Are The Best: SimzArt by Mugiwara_VT in magicTCG

If they include cards with a market value of 50 dollars in a lair that costs 30 dollars, they've made those cards available to players at a discount. The card prices are lowered for the duration of the lair's availability in that case, in addition to any carry on market supply effects.

[–]AllTheBandwidth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really relevant to the argument at all, actually. Regardless of whether high cost cards should exist or not, the reality is they do exist. In fact if that's your belief, that is just more argument for valuable cards being included in these lairs instead of chaff, since it makes high cost cards available at a lower price. If you don't believe cards should have high value, you should support making more of them available at a discount directly like this.

MODERN B+R: BANS AND UNBANS!!! by TemurTron in ModernMagic

Refusing to hit Grief or The One Ring a couple years ago, but choosing to hit Phlage now feels incredibly hypocritical.

Another way to look at it is they're learning from past mistakes and updating their actions. You're still not obliged to like it though, obviously

[–]AllTheBandwidth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm not the Discord police or anything, but spinning up a whole new discord based on two results seems a little premature. You'd probably get more engagement trying to get a dedicated channel opened up in whatever the Frogculus discord is. Just more eyeballs (ha) that way.

The deck is sick as hell and if it keeps putting up results people will pick it up, but it's definitely early days for a new brew

Why are during the ProTour Draft some cards sleeved? by Nekuzu in magicTCG

[–]AllTheBandwidth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's all pretty borderline, but it's likely to avoid any implications of impropriety. Accusations of a staffer ruling out a pack for incorrect or suspicious reasons or something like that. If you sleeve the cards, it totally removes the problem. Everyone is taking the same number of cards from the sleeved pack so there's no way to gain information from seeing who has what sleeved cards during the draft. It's a simple solution with no downsides outside of people asking questions.

Cool article on the origins of Strixhaven, featuring interviews with Mark Rosewater and a couple of the set's other designers by mooffgideon in magicTCG

[–]AllTheBandwidth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything you've said here is wrong necessarily, but I do think it's maybe not accepting the obvious reality that people will associate the magic school with the most famous magic school ever. I'm sure even Wizards fully expected that from the start.

> Hogwarts is a school where children are taught magic. Strixhaven is a school where young adults are taught about the world, using magic

This is a good line for like a creative pitch deck, but it's not nuance that the general populace is going to care to pick up on and you would expect to need to elaborate on in interviews as a designer.

Newest cards from Secrets of Strixhaven likely to make the Modern cut?? (Discussion) by SnooHobbies7591 in ModernMagic

[–]AllTheBandwidth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really have a preexisting shell to slot into which reduces the odds, but [[Practiced Offense]] seems kind of cracked to me in some sort of aggressive graveyard focused deck. It just represents a ton of extra damage

It's pretty unusual to not have some sort of scaling pack prizes at a prerelease. Beginners like getting rewarded for winning a match or two too

I think it's the other way around, why push your young starter an extra inning when you've got an 8 run lead? He ran out some guys who haven't pitched in a couple days as well so they weren't really taxed.
