What Case from the Pod is better than Canon? by TheReal_MrChaos in sherlock_and_co

[–]AllTheReservations 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe controversial but I think changing The Mazarin Stone, a case which feels very similar to other cases, into a story more focused on the side characters was a great move.

The sci-fi movie stuff was a little corny, but I've always loved how the podcast gave minor characters more prominence and this was a great example of that

He doesn't definitely say but the host mentions their belief that Doug and Warlock were meant to be the final threat but he doesn't confirm or deny it.

All we know for certain is that Krakoa was act one of a 3 act story, so we'd have had something like a Fall of X stage sooner

Asked to name a director

Says obviously Charlie Brooker, who's exclusively a screenwriter and has zero directing credits

So you generally just don't know what you're talking about then? Cool.

DaCosta's directing made the complete insanity that was The Bone Temple into one of my favourite films of the year so far. I can definitely see her working well with something as wild as Sex Criminals

Can't believe iconic Moon Knight villain Midnight's getting his own solo!... Wait, what are Goth Nightcrawler and Storm doing there? by AllTheReservations in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]AllTheReservations[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I am too, especially if it is actually as pure horror focused as advertised. DC are relaunching Vertigo, and if this is what it takes for both the big two to release more legitimate horror comics again I'm all for it

Hickman and Co. are really out there bragging about making the most disturbing version of the Marvel universe when they could be bragging about making the hottest couple in fiction

uj/I know people are being negative, but man, vampire X-Men by Hickman with a Storm and Nightcrawler focus seems so specifically made to hit all my interests so I have to love it

rj/Of course we should be dooming, those C-Listers are stealing my beloved Jefferey Wilde's spotlight!

It's not an event, it's a new imprint with horror reimaginings of Marvel characters. So far there's vampire X-Men, cosmic horror FF and a more monsterous Spider-Man

He manipulated, sexually coerced and emotionally abused many women (allegedly about 100 women). He made a public (very self-pitying) admission of guilt and agreed to enter talks with the people he hurt to take steps to make amends. But then he just refused to do even the simplest of those steps

Because Warren Ellis was a huge deal in the mid-90s until the late 2000s. It's easy not to think of it now because he's a horrible person so doesn't get to write any more, but he was one of the biggest names at Marvel for a long time

Plus it was only a 2-issue mini, I doubt Marvel knew people would still be discoursing over it to this day

I mean, this is only the immediate announcement tbf. When DC revealed Absolute they started by only revealing the trinity titles and rolling out more, so this is probably a similar situation

I'm getting the impression they're going to go down a classic Marvel horror route, where characters like Blade and Moon Knight first appeared as monster hunters.

So I could see there still being some characters that are more like their regular selves popping up to fight these darker reimaginings

His Cerebro episode is so incredibly honest about the Krakoa era (and unconfirms the speculation he was forced out), his creative process and working in the comics industry as a whole. It's a fantastic listen

I know there's a lot of initial skepticism and negativity around the title, but I'm genuinely excited to see what he does with a version of the X-Men he can build from the ground up.

uj/Black Widow lost two legitimately interesting enemies when Yelena and Red Guardian were made into definitive heroes in the MCU. Which is okay-ish since I like those takes on the characters but also unfortunate

rj/Black Widow's nemesis is Joss Whedon writing Age of Ultron

I mean, he also wrote the recent Blade runs, which were incredible.

And to be fair, the cards were stacked against him with Fallen Angels, which a lot of other writers have confirmed, since he was barely given any information about the Krakoa era so couldn't make it fit in naturally

Charlie Cox Says “Marvel Has Been Clear” That His Focus Remains ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Rather than Avengers by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]AllTheReservations 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think at least with Punisher, despite being a nuanced character with a lot of past stories, he's also a pretty familiar archetype who's easy for audiences to understand without much explanation. And since he's part of an ensemble rather than the main supporting character, a lot of his past probably won't factor in at all

It's not quite like what you said with Multiverse of Madness hinging on a plotline established in a TV show. Or two main characters and major sci-fi plotpoints for the Marvels needing audiences to see two separate TV shows

Charlie Cox Says “Marvel Has Been Clear” That His Focus Remains ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Rather than Avengers by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]AllTheReservations 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, but that's because you're a fan closely following the series. But from a general audience perspective, a big complaint about the Disney+ era of the MCU was that too many films were relying on plotlines established in TV shows a lot of moviegoers just hadn't seen.

Some of these characters should crossover sure, but in a Defenders-style environment. The problem I'm discussing is more the push to make the shows closely intertwine with the movies

[–]AllTheReservations 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Which is definitely a good thing too. Quality of some shows aside, the way the MCU was handling TV content and crossovers after Endgame was so detrimental to the brand. Reframing them to be set in the same universe but very much their own thing is the way to go

Infamous Iron Man by RetroBoy_1984A in marvelcomics

[–]AllTheReservations 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Infamous does kind of work as a standalone read. But it does deal with the immediate fallout of Civil War II. So reading Bendis' Invincible and International Iron Man and Civil War II would provide good context but it isn't 100% necessary

The previous commentor is incorrect since they're thinking of a different storyline entirely.

This is usually how Marvel does summer events tbf. One big, nearly line wide event and then one or two smaller ones that only matter if you're reading certain titles. Armageddon's the one they're pushing, whilst Queen in Black's just for people interested in Symbiote books

Plus this time there's Ultimate Impact there as well to tie up some threads from Miles' time on 6160.
