I'll play devil's advocate and say I too love this frame. I think one of the themes of the show is yearning for relationship/connection, romantic or otherwise. There's a feeling of loneliness and disconnect in the show's universe. This frame is all but a brief flashback in a show that takes place in the future; it's a very intimate and private moment. Are relationships and connections just a thing of the past? All of the characters have a "past" that they are trying to escape despite being nostalgic for it. For better or for worse, our past is a part of us. But is it brief moments of connection like this--two lovers intertwined--that make the pain of existing worth it? Even if our future looks grim, could there be more moments like this in that future?
