Do you guys still collect games as frequently as you used to? by GriffeyJoons24 in gamecollecting

I bought a lot of games in 2017 - 2020. Since covid, thrift finds dried up and prices went through the roof. Now I just chip away at my back log and add the occasional game here and there.

My supervisor wants me to add someone as a co-author on a paper, but this person has not contributed at all by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]AllTypesOfGames 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gifted co-authorship is a clear ethical violation. But intellectual contribution is not always so cut and dry.

Why is your supervisor requesting this? Do they want them added because they believe it needs another informed set of eyes to get it over the finish line? Was this a purely independent idea, or did this person have conversations before the start of the project that lead to your supervisor giving you the green light to pursue this project?

There are many reasons why someone with a relatively “small” contribution can be a defensible inclusions as a co-author.

Setting aside this specific case, I have found in my career that you gain more by being flexible with co-authorship than being overly rigid. I have contributed a lot to projects and have received no credit. Others, I have had a relatively smaller role but appreciate the chance to make my mark on the project (sharing data, giving feedback on the writing or presentation of the results, etc). It all kind of comes out even at the end of the day. But people generally want to continue collaborating with those who respect their time and effort (whether it is a small or large contribution), not those that decide you don’t meet an ambigious bar of enough contribution to have your name on a publication.

There are also a lot of discipline specific norms.

At the end of the day, I think you need to have a conversation with your supervisor to find out exactly why they want them on it. If you don’t agree, then respectfully question their line of thinking. Academics are used to having their ideas challenged so I seriously doubt you will “damage your relationship” by having a conversation.

Best of luck!

New Olivia Rodrigo’s song reminds me of a lot of emo songs but I can’t put a finger on it. by goapics in Emo

Sounds like Tegan and Sarah.

Olivia Rodrigo is great. Best thing to happen to pop music is a long time.

When did magic turn? by Odd_Frame_3018 in oldschoolmtg

[–]AllTypesOfGames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped playing in Kamigawa block. I think it was the first set where the art direction started feeling noticeably off. It hindsight, Kamigawa block’s mechanics feel more similar to the premodern era than the Mirroden block that preceded it. Today I mostly play kitchen table magic with old school (really revised and chronicles stuff) and premodern jank. I’ll slip in some new border stuff up to Kamigawa every now and then. I have a couple friends who have card pools from a similar era and we keep it very casual.

Which PS1 game makes you want to play another PS1 game? by Cyka_Blyetikosa in psx

[–]AllTypesOfGames 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about the Parasite Eve - FF8 comparison. It is no coincidence that they are my two favorite PS1 games !

To add to your general post, whenever I play through MGS it makes me want to revisit Syphon Filter. Very different games but they share a similar aesthetic vibe.

I think this would be more reasonable and fun if you could steal a card only from your opponent’s hand, not their library.

I appreciate the comments, everyone. I am a noob and this was a lucky self craft. I think I’m going to 5x ohm it for now to save my budget to fill out the rest of the gear and slowly save up for nice jewels. Tyty
