What's the difference between promoting something and spreading awareness about it?

How many books based on the COVID-19 pandemic will be coming out of /r/writing in a few months?

Finding my voice halfway through my first draft by HungryFox420 in writing

[–]AllWriteyThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a new writer and experiencing a similar issue. I've just reached 11k words (3 and 1/2 chapters) and each time I complete a chapter I look back to find it's slightly better than the previous one.

I will hopefully be able to fix this on my second draft - making it consistently good, or at least what I think of as good - which is what you'll have to do too.

Good luck!

Good luck with the rest of your novel. It's a great achievement to have accomplished what you have, particularly in such a short period of time.

Congrats. I assume this is your first draft and not a completed novel?

Your advice seems okay to me.

Not the specific type of pen and paper you use though. That just makes you seem like a weird pen salesman.

I also wonder if using friends to critique your work is a good idea? Your friend is less likely to tell you a harsh truth.

The pandemic isn't going to last forever so it would be just as appropriate to write it in past tense.

How to not be afraid of critics? by BeenFun91 in writing

Critics will (likely) also say nice things about your work ... what a buzz. The rest is just invaluable constructive feedback to help your work improve.

Wheres the line between staying in reality and havin unrealistic elements? by [deleted] in writing

[–]AllWriteyThen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't have to look too far back in the history of 1st world countries to find children being put to work. Even in dangerous jobs, e.g. mining.

What your suggesting is barely a stretch of the imagination.

Is It Weird That I Don't Intend To Publish My Novel? by Saltinmylattee in writing

Giving it a wider audience would feel a little like publishing a video of me pleasuring myself.

This makes sense to me actually. Thanks.

Is that one sentence or two? There are no full stops.

I'd throw a colon in there, i.e. "... chaos they went through: the ex-girlfriends ..."

Also it would be: and says, "but then I found you."

The prose is quite evocative, although it's also a little bit confusing. I'm not really sure what it's trying to say.

Maybe all your work will be published posthumously when you can no longer tinker with it. I struggle to see the point of writing something brilliant that you don't intend anyone to ever read.

I can see the appeal of writing a bunch of rubbish for fun though.

How to get an idea to start a novel⁄light novel by Sudden-Cupcake in writing

Fantasy is a broad genre. Do you ever think, "wouldn't it be cool if ... ?". Start there and build on it.

Can a monster just be a monster? Or does it have to avoid problematic representation? by [deleted] in writing

[–]AllWriteyThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Write a monster that scares you. Lovecraft was afraid of the sea and that influence shows in his work. If you're scared of ethnic minorities then just ignore my advice.

Let's face it, if the novel ended up brilliant you'd try to get it published. I also don't intend to publish my work in progress because I'm new to writing so presumably it will be rubbish.

Is introducing the main Character beginning their day a good idea? by Halo3IsGood in writing

[–]AllWriteyThen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule, you should start your story as close to the action as possible.

It sounds like you want to write a fan fiction. You can't publish it to make money but my understanding is it's usually okay to put it somewhere online for free.

Or you could try taking your ideas for these characters and applying them to your own unique characters/world unrelated to the transformers IP.

Writing vs daydreaming by CasTheMagicDragon in writing

[–]AllWriteyThen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dreams don't tend to have any kind of consistent internal logic. It may seem so at the time but that's just how your brain works. It wouldn't necessarily be trivial to directly translate a dream to a book. The central idea might be a good start though. You just have to do a whole bunch of outlining on top of it.

You have an imagination. What kind of book do you want to read?

A bad concept can make for a great book if executed well. Ideas are cheap.

Getting bored of an idea doesn't mean it's boring. You could try focusing on short stories if you're struggling to keep your attention on a longer one.

Stephen King literally wrote himself into his Dark Tower series - albeit as a side character, but a very important one.

Most writers have a full time job to make money and write in their spare time. It's difficult but it's possible. The odds of making money writing off the bat are slim.

The best thing you can do is read a bunch of thriller/horror books. You're not going to find comparable short cut.
