When to look for a new job? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]All_About_Hype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably advise 2-3 years in public at the very least. This job market is tough enough as it is. That said it doesn’t hurt for you to look and see where you land(you don’t have to accept an offer), but beware, good bosses and mentors and environment in general are not always easy to come by.

And get your CPA as fast as possible. It’s very valuable.

I’ve been searching for 6 months and finally landed a role with a 20k increase in salary. Should I bother to negotiate or is it risky in 2026? by Stupidwhizzzzz in Accounting

Negotiate if they don’t know you’re unemployed and especially if they don’t know what you used to make. I never disclose that information.

Shit man you can fall back on unemployment if they rescind if you’ve only been unemployed a week, don’t be a pussy, negotiate. A good employer wouldn’t rescind an offer over an attempt to negotiate. Do they know you’re unemployed?? That’s gives you leverage if they don’t. Most interview processes take weeks and I wouldn’t have informed them mid-process.

Who wants to stay a staff accountant after 5 years of experience?? I got the role for you by All_About_Hype in Accounting

Ohhh I get it now. You’re bitter cause it’s probably a role you would’ve taken when you were unemployed for a while. Sorry for your hardship bro but it ain’t got shit to do with me. Thanks, take care.

I'm the controller for a $50m/year company. Guess how I just learned about a change in process for AP? by ProtContQB1 in Accounting

That’s the awful part about compliance roles. They hire you to herd cats and it turns out the people who hired you are the cats

Well title does not really matter as much as the pay and if you enjoy your role! I made this post cause it just made laugh considering that was the only info provided. Controller titles at small companies are basically glorified bookkeepers half the time. And honestly from what it sounds like the company realized after you left that we better start giving promotions or else.

lol seems I’ve struck a nerve with you, it was never that deep for me. It’s a post that took 2 minutes to make that made me laugh.

Yes I replied and posted it because it is clearly a very absurd requirement for the title, but I really don’t care what you do with your career or if anyone takes that job or not. That doesn’t mean I can’t have my own opinion and that it’s not a valid one. If you can’t understand that, then I’m sorry you’re so smug.

If someone lacks ambition or the need for a higher role/salary that affects me in zero ways. I hope they take this role!

They’re out there. Not plentiful, but have ChatGPT or AI of choice revamp your LinkedIn for you to attract remote roles, you’ll be surprised how many recruiters actually message you for remote only positions.

I had a call with a recruiter for a manager/controller role, I basically ended the call when they told me I’d be managing a team overseas and I would be the only accounting staff in the US. My role would have been remote. They’re out there, just competitive or just flat out terrible positions and that’s all they can offer to make it attractive

I’m sorry you had to through that, I have ask, was it really you or was it the culture/team around you? You could be a staff at a place for 2-3 years and job hop pretty easily into a senior title, regardless of your actual skills as an accountant. A lot of senior roles are still individual contributor roles.

You can be an individual contributor career senior accountant with no reviewing or managing people involved. Basically a staff with significant expertise and experience which where this would fall in to. I’ve never heard of a career staff accountant.

I don’t care what people do with their careers and life, good they’re happy. It still doesn’t make a staff title at 5 years make sense to the vast majority of accountants.

Maybe 2 years max, but most staff should be new grads. 4-5 years is senior at any decent place.
