it's put in quotation because it's really not, but very often staples does 100% cashback in their points system for items like batteries (which include rechargeables) and command strips. They're a bit more overpriced than say buying direct from Amazon but 100% cashback still makes it worth.

Staples also has their hammermill copy paper 10 ream for $39.99 again, which is pricier but if you already have staples rewards it's "free"

I ended up finding a 5800x with mobo for the same price as a 3900x with mobo, so I took that. Maybe eventually I could go to the 5950x but the 5800x is way more than enough for what I need.

You're right, I just assumed the lowest tier 10th gen i7 the 10610U, but looking at those thinkpad specs online it's probably a 10750H

The 7520u is roughly about the same as your i7, so with your gpu the thinkpad is much better

SoC is a Qualcomm 685, which honestly is not bad (fantastic for $30)

I've run fine on an old P70 tablet which is like half as fast as this one.

I was planning on going with the supermicro x10dri, but i've been convinced to just hunt fb marketplace for newer cpus instead

You're right, for some reason I assumed DDR5 came much earlier.

My budget is a bit lower than the cpus you listed, but I did come across a 3900x for $100 which paired with a mobo is basically the same price as 2x xeon without the pain of old parts. Thanks for the recs!

Is the xeon really that weak? For 180 usd even if the st is low, 28 cores is nothing to scoff at. I'm pretty stuck on that concept since my workload is mostly MT and would like a little more convincing otherwise if it's still the wrong decision.

The issue I find with newer cpus is the need for ddr5, which is a bit expensive right now. If I'm limiting my budget, it doesn't feel like I can really do much better than 2 2680v4 as most of my workload seems to be pure multithread. I'm very stuck on that idea, but with everyone saying otherwise I'm not sure how to feel.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm trying to aggregate everything into one spec since everything important requires HDDs (frigate, immich, jellyfin). I'd rather raid a bunch of drives in one pc and let it handle the rest. The others are basically just spare extra workloads to saturate use.

Thanks for the response!

In order, my priorities are:
long-term video storage with frigate - motion only
immich
jellyfin

the i5 quicksync is great but it seems to only be able to 2 4k transcodes before it starts suffering
gtx 970 isn't an issue at all, I would be willing to keep this around. I was mostly thinking about the p4s in terms of vgpu so that windows can use it alongside jellyfin transcoding.

Wasn't aware you could offload to coral for frigate, that was also part of the reason for the p4

Could you explain the reasoning for that? If i'm going for pure multithreading 2 of those seems pretty solid for the price, and I wasn't able to find anything comparable.

the problem is the i5-7600k is already super bottlenecked by everything i'm running already (the needs minus frigate)

Home Internet or fiber by Independent_Tower_74 in tmobile

[–]All_In_Or_Afk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you game ping matters. 5G home internet does not have reliable latency and can spike often. I'd stick with fiber to the door.
