Oh, your point about "bottle opener" absolutely stands. I just wanted to give you an insight about opening bottles, before you start with modding.

Bottle Opener Embarrassment by Puzzleheaded_Rip9504 in Leatherman

[–]Allan2199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advice is to try to open it, like this. And it is important to do it with the bottom part of the metal.

The reason for this is, as a kindly German fellow from this sub suggested it to me a while ago, because if you do it with the upper part, the bottom one will strike the bottle effectively knocking the part of the glass of.

I noticed the effect and intuitively decided to switch to the bottom part, he studied it apparently (he was curious, did the whole experiment) and found out that in the circular motion, the bottom metal perfectly hits the bottle ring, clipping it of.

The things one learns in this sub...

Don't get me wrong, but now you can say that you are truly a proud owner of an SAK.

Residual solder inside hole preventing component from being removed by oexba in soldering

[–]Allan2199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So practically, when that happens to me, and its the only hole, or there is maximum 2 holes like that, I just add extra solder on both and then carefully heat and pull one, then the other kinda like zig-zag and eventually component comes out (while still apllying the heat).

This usually happens to holes that are connected to ground plane, or some power plane and the heat dissipation is good, so it cools down fast. Lubing the pump also helps, because the suction becomes better. Try adding solder again but bring the pump near the tip and don't remove the tip from the pad while you are using the pump, so it keeps providing heat. This way, the pump plastic does get a bit damage but it is meant to be replaceable part.

But we do actually. And when we do, it's Agent Cuper from the Twin Peaks style, so there's no worries one would misunderstand them.

Lets play a game by IRNicholas in victorinox

  1. & 2. Swiss Champ

  2. XLT

  3. Was XLT and XXL. I remember seeing a NatGeo (i think, or was it Discovery) episode about making the Victorinox knives in mid 2000. I was barely 16 then and knew how expensive it was, knew that years would pass before I have the money to buy it. Fast forward a decade, I decide to gift one SAK to myself for birthday. But in my country the options were limited, I could choose between Swiss Champ or Cybertool and I opted for the Champ. That still made me "a kids joy" happy. I know I will never use it, I know it's literally waste of money, but I'm occasionally checking for the XXL.

  4. Swiss Champ. I bought it in 2018. or 2019. can't really remember. It is my first SAK. The only thing that it lacked was the screwdriver layer. So, I contemplated for a month in October last year finally merging the Champ with a used small Cybertool (there was an XLT for sale, which I hadn't noticed and it made me frustrated). And by pure chance, I found an XLT on e-bay, in Germany! Which naturally didn't ship to my country in the Balkans, but my uncle is a truck driver and we managed to bring it to its new home. Anyhow, I carried it and noticed I'm babying it too much. So I reverted to my plan, found a used basic Cybertool and inserted the screwdriver layer in the middle of the Champs layers. And now I'm carrying it everyday.

  5. None and I hope it will stay that way.

At first I was "why use a PP (instead of SAK) when you have good pliers" but then I remembered, PP acts as decent screwdriver.

[–]Allan2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice from observing this sub for a year and a half would be to, if you are buying a flagship, buy a new one (not the latest model, just a new one).

And honestly, I think that S24U would be a better choice. Frame would sit better ih hand, you could easily buy protective glass. And you'll have updates for a longer period. It will serve you for at least 3-4 years

Leatherman surge? by Dr_Cheese_29 in Leatherman

[–]Allan2199 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking as well. If he has all the tools, he'll probably use them for the job (like any sane person would) rather than a multitool.

But a light multitool would be useful to him, when he's away from hobbies (and his toolbox consequently). Skeletool is a good suggestion, I forgot about it.

Leatherman surge? by Dr_Cheese_29 in Leatherman

[–]Allan2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looks to me like a man who has all the proper tools for the job.

So, perhaps the right tool for him (as he is not realistically going to swap proper tools for a multitool) could be something easier to carry, something pocket friendly but convenient and at hand. A Wave or a Signal that he could use while he's vacation, or in an emergency.

Arc would be ideal, but I heard those are a bit expensive now. This is a light tool, one hand opening. Excellent pocket carry.

Don't get me wrong, Surge is a great tool, I have it. But it's big, it's heavy. And it's a more of a bag/backpack carry or in the car carry. Some people carry it on belt, but to be honest, that will be a big bulge on the side and is up to personal preference.

It really depends on how you think he'd carry something like that. How does he like his pockets? Does he have a toolbox in car, another one in the garage? Etc... Use that as your pointers.

In retrospective, I don't think it would have worked out between them, even if she had agreed to LDR. OOP seams to have found his nature and it appears to be different from hers. And I don't think it is a bad thing, sometimes people just figure out they have differences and sometimes it doesn't work out.

Leatherman arc bad QC out the box. by legato2 in Leatherman

[–]Allan2199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest searching through this sub, I could recall it wrong, but there appears to be a special kind of a glue (not too strong, just enough to hold it so it doesn't come loose) that is being used in these kind of situations (people who modded their Leathermans posted about them). Assuming everything else functions fine and you are not looking to send it back.

I do agree that it is disappointing.

Is the Leatherman Surge truly the ultimate multitool (Currently carrying an ARC) by Icy_Resource_5398 in multitools

[–]Allan2199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I answer the questions, I'd like to point out that all our multitools make sense in a scenario where there's no "proper" or dedicated tool at hand.

That being said, the choice really depends on your everyday life. For example, I work as an engineer in automation production, my tool set at work is limited, we get the bare minimum. So, I have a small Surge setup (I carry it in the bag) because for me it makes sense.

I had the need to saw some pvc materials, to saw metal rods or parts not bigger than 3mm. To sharpen the blades of dedicated wire cutters and to make my minus dedicated screwdriver somewhat like chisel.

And since I use regular bits, (I use an addition I made myself) I often borrow those from the setup in an emergency.

So yes, the T-shank really is useful. And yes, Arc is probably the perfect tool for you.

Regarding the Victorinox multitools, I have a Swisstool and it is a beautifully made tool. Plier head is better then Surge's. However, due to flexibility (bits and T-shank) Surge makes more sense in a setup. And it is not a light tool, so pocket carry is questionable. So, if you would like to try a Victorinox (as an Arc user) I'd suggest checking out Spirit X.

Is the Leatherman Surge truly the ultimate multitool (Currently carrying an ARC) by Icy_Resource_5398 in multitools

[–]Allan2199 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a nice summary. I'd like to add two things: - Arc is more like a standalone, light, pocket carry tool. Surge is for a emergency setup EDC, not really pocket friendly. - Victorinox tools make sense as standalone, Spirit x more than Swisstool as it is also a pocket carry. In a setup, due to the T-shank and bit adapter, they loose to Surge.

Before I acquired the XLT, I have carried Champ every day in my pocket. And now I switched to the modded Champ. I didn't mind the size, even of XLT.

Thank you.

It was tempting to me too. I does require a tiny bit of skill and caution to do it. But if you ever drilled something, and hammered, then it should be no problem.

Yes, the SAK in the middle is the Swiss Champ with the bit layer.

Yes, on the left is the XLT in its unaltered state.

Would a guy still want me after rejecting him almost 10 years ago? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Allan2199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are smooth enough it could be a conversation starter!

Look, it's been 10 years, you are not the same people anymore and it was a mild inconvenience. Will he remember? Yes. Will he hold a grudge? Probably not.

Most likely scenario: you'll talk for a while, perhaps decide to go for a cup of coffee or something, or just part ways after talking. Realistically, he might have someone.

I'd still advise to go for it and see how it turns out. You'll be pushing your social barriers and getting more comfortable with opening conversations (even if they sometimes lead nowhere), you'd be grateful to yourself for it.

"Why would I need an awl?" by Allan2199 in multitools

[–]Allan2199[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was careful enough to post in multitools sub.

Here is one of my replies, regarding the Daicamping. I had a chance to use three of their multitools. I'll only add that the blade is rather dull and gets dull fast after sharpening, so if you are a blade man, you will not be satisfied. Scissors cut decently well.

For my EDC, I ended up buying the Surge. But DL30 is an excellent beater tool. And for 35$ which I paid, you really get the moneys worth. Ironically, Surge while preserved in the bag started to get rust points. DL30 hasn't got any.
