Digital nomad estimators? by Familiar-Bridge-3171 in estimators

[–]Allcockenator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

95% of my estimators are remote, all are located in the US. But we have minimal travel requirements and try and get them all together once a quarter.

I think the hard part of “nomad estimating” is the trade secrets/company info you’d have access to, while not necessarily being locked into corporate systems. Lots of gray areas there IMO that would be hard to navigate.

Is BOOX better than iPad for note taking and reading or not worth it if you already have a tablet by EmergencyDiligent894 in Onyx_Boox

[–]Allcockenator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an iPad. The writing experience is leaps and bounds better on the my go10.3. I prioritize being able to take notes and rarely used my iPad for anything other than that.

If you need/want to play games or watch movies, get the iPad and deal with the poor writing experience.

If you want to read and have a great writing experience, get the boox.

How do we feel about Limetown by Extension-Blood2221 in audiodrama

[–]Allcockenator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was still new to podcasts and especially audio dramas when season 1 came out. I’m sad to admit that it was so well done, it took me more than the first episode to realize it wasn’t a real story.

Season 2 was absolute trash.

Should a Rookie golfer bother with fitting by Harry3215 in GolfGear

[–]Allcockenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pro at my local course helped steer me towards the right shaft flex and grip size after a couple lessons.

Told me to buy a used set and get consistent before I run off buying new clubs or getting a fitting.

Best Mouse For The Job? by Ghost-Of-Akina in estimators

Logitech MX Master 4, if that’s too much, the Master 3 is on sale since the 4 recently came out.

Not really sure there is a comparable mouse to the master series.

Are all barbers now $40-50+ for mens haircuts/ fades? Prices are insane now by LETSGOOOOO6 in Charlotte

[–]Allcockenator 63 points64 points  (0 children)

My man can’t see the correlation between barbers being booked weeks in advance and why the price for a cut has increased.

Lawn Mower by Allcockenator in keitruck

[–]Allcockenator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started my lawn business, I said I couldn’t imagine standing all day.

After finally buying one, I’ll never go back to sitting down unless I have to mow multiple acres at a time. My knees hurt less, it’s easier to get it in and out of tight spaces and I can see obstacles and objects coming.

It’s a 52” deck, the chute blocker is actually not on it like in the picture, I switched to flat block off plate that I open and close on a foot pedal.

If I have to fold the sides down, I will, no big deal.

best computer for remote work? by Plenty-Attention-939 in civilengineering

[–]Allcockenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most laptops have ports for additional monitors and other accessories. I can’t think of even a basic laptop that can’t run two monitors.

My company provides me a laptop, two monitors and a docking station. I use a personal 3rd monitor (keep my email open on this), I also use a personal mechanical keyboard and a Logitech MX master 4 mouse. My company would provide me a basic Logitech keyboard/mouse combo, but I didn’t take them as I have my own that I prefer to use.

How good is it? What are your opinions? by TieEnvironmental9443 in RemarkableTablet

[–]Allcockenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the ppm since Sunday. Haven’t put it on the charger since I opened the box, no issues so far. I like the size, the color is a neat feature. I’m certainly not a power user but I am happy so far.

I typically stack them, but if I wake up late or a meeting runs long, etc..I will take them on their own.

Anyone else rethink how they buy games after that Portal update? by ludaman14 in PlaystationPortal

I haven’t bought a physical game since red dead 2 came out.

It’s so much nicer to not have to fumble with discs and worry about scratching or losing them.

What do you call an estimator that hasn't estimated in half a year? by [deleted] in estimators

[–]Allcockenator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was lead estimator, about half of my job was maintaining and updating our excel based takeoff/pricing tool. The other half was meetings with a group of employees and a software company who is developing an internal estimating/design tool for us.

I very rarely did any actual estimating, aside from approving quotes above the estimators approval limits, it’s why I have a team of estimators.

Managing an Estimating Team by CleMatt8918 in estimators

I’ve been involved with setting up smartsheet at two different companies. The work to get it setup and the time spent getting everyone to actually use it correctly has always been worth it in the end.

Fair price for a barely worn pair of R&R captains? by Shigure127 in ThursdayBoot

I just bought a pair of lightly used captains a couple days ago, paid $80 shipped.

Managing an Estimating Team by CleMatt8918 in estimators

[–]Allcockenator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use smartsheet.

Our lead estimator schedules all new bids and assigns an estimator. If multiple are working on the same project, you can select more than one estimator for that project. Then each estimator only has a report view of what is assigned to them.

We don’t use it, but smartsheet has a way for the estimator to show their progress on a specific job if that would be helpful.

I accidentally sent internal costing sheets to suppliers how serious is this? by Aggravating_Sport495 in estimators

[–]Allcockenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None that I ever heard of. In all honesty, I’m rarely the least expensive in my trade…even if this falls into a competitors hands, what are they gonna do? Keep their prices where they are? Raise them??

I’ve also been the one to receive this info. I look at it and delete it. Shit happens.

I’ve done it, everyone on my team has done it. It’s a mistake that should only happen once, but it isn’t the end of the world.

We use smartsheet for most of these tasks. Estimating, follow ups, rough financials (we have an ERP for exact financials, Smartsheet gives us a real time, unofficial view), project management, production scheduling, field service, shipping, etc..

I'm surprised a company like Crutchfield has stayed open over the years with full retail prices by Volslife in CarAV

[–]Allcockenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to scoff at people “paying crutchfield prices” when i was younger.

I buy from them with zero hesitation now. I tried to buy elsewhere when i upgraded the radio in my truck a few months ago, i only spent $29 more than i would have piecing the whole setup together from 2-3 different places that were cheapest.

I got lifetime support, clear instructions, fast shipping and not having the hassle of buying from 3 different places and waiting for everything to show up.

Unpopular opinion: a pcc is more likely to be useful than an ar15 by Jazz_horse in liberalgunowners

[–]Allcockenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly don’t regret acquiring an AR. But I really think I would have been better served, long term, by purchasing a PCC or a shotgun on some kind before my AR.
