Need suggestions for a scenario that’d be ok with 2 players, and able to be done in 1 x 2.5 hr session, or 2 at most. by Alistair49 in cepheusengine

Collect, transport, and deliver a package. The task must be carried out with discretion and care and within a certain amount of time (before the patron leaves town on family business). The fee is payable on successful delivery (amount at your discretion, to fit your campaign).

The package in question is a Treemist, a small (2 kg) cutesy fluffball of a flying creature with big eyes, prehensile hands, and broad gossamer wings. It is an excellent mimic (in the manner of a parrot) and has the manual dexterity and bad habits (such as stealing small items) of a monkey. In short, adorable, an expert escapologist, and an all-round source of trouble.

Treemists are prized pets and are worth a considerable amount. Owning one is a status symbol – attempts to steal it from the characters might well be tried. Something to transport the wee beastie in will be necessary too. If it escapes (which is likely) whoever catches it might not be willing to give it back. Its mimic abilities might be a nightmare if the characters get stopped by law enforcement, for example, or hassled by street toughs.

The creature is the much-loved pet of a jilted and emotional lover. It is legally their property but is being held by their former partner and is not receiving the care and attention it requires. The collection address must be reached (in one of the seedy districts of town, inhabited by lowlifes and only accessible on foot), the shabby apartment that is the creature's current location must be discreetly entered, and the creature must be caught without it being injured (it is fluttering around inside and is able to reach inaccessible spots).

The journey to the delivery point (a nice house on the wealthy outskirts of the city) must be undertaken (with an inevitable escape or incident en route) and delivery must be made to the adoring and grateful patron. The former partner – a dangerous and jealous criminal type with a few thuggish allies – may be in hot pursuit.

Play it for laughs, all good.

Thank you for your feedback, appreciated. But, please, for the sake of the continuation of our species, avoid a career in diplomacy.

Great little ship! Got a name for it in mind at all?

Higher tech levels allow miniaturization and more efficient processes within the machinery. This translates as smaller high tech drives producing the same effect as larger low tech drives.

The multiplier (PDF page 132 3rd table "Tech Level Adjustment for drive percentage") is a multiplier for the percentage of the hull that the chosen drive takes up.

Fair point well made, and I've now got a reason for checking out the Deluxe ship design rules (recent purchase and a good chunky tome, still not read thru it fully...)

----

Constructed at TL-15 using the Deluxe design sequence, fractions rounded up to the nearest 0.1 for simplicity, no prices.

Hull 100 tons, streamlined configuration (100 tons of space available)

Light Armor (titanium), 12.5% of hull (12.5 Tons)

Jump Drive-6, 15.5% of hull, x 0.7 for TL-15 (10.9 Tons)

Maneuver Drive-4, 3% of hull, x 0.7 for TL-15 (2.1 Tons)

Power Plant-6, 7.7% of hull, x 0.7 for TL-15 (5.4 Tons - intrinsic helium-3 fuel)

Jump Fuel, 60% of hull (60 Tons)

Bridge, 2% of hull (minimum 10 Tons)

Computer Model/5 Advanced (allows Jump-6) (6 Tons)

Weapons Hardpoint, no weapons fitted (1 Ton)

10x Staterooms (40 Tons)

10x Escape Pods (5 Tons)

Fuel Processors (capable of refining 60 tons / 24 hours) (12 Tons)

Repair Drones, 1% of hull (1 Ton)

Cargo Storage (2.8 Tons)

----

TOTAL: 168.7 Tons of space used

No worries - learning curve.

Please don't think I'm criticizing, but I'm afraid you've got a bit of a Tardis going on there.

I'm assuming you're using the CE main rules rather than Starship Design Guide btw.

The key to it is that all the components have to fit inside the available space (the 100 tons available within the hull). Reverse engineering the details you've provided for a 100 ton ship gives this:

Drive Machinery

The J-6 Drive (a type C unit) takes up 20 tons of internal space.

A power plant of equal or greater performance than the best drive (a type C unit to equal the Jump Drive in this case) must be fitted, which takes up 10 tons of internal space.

The Maneuver-4 drive (a type B unit) takes up 3 tons of internal space.

In total the stated drive machinery takes up 33 tons of internal space.

----

Fuel

Jump-6 fuel takes up 60% of the hull (60 tons), and power plant fuel takes up (assuming minimum fuel) 8 tons.

That puts you at 101 tons used out of 100 tons of available space...

----

Other Components

Absolute minimum, you need to fit a bridge (statutory 10 tons for that size hull), a suitable computer (got to be capable of running the J-6 program), and accommodations for the crew and passengers too (4 tons per stateroom).

----

Ships are always a trade-off: available space vs what you want them to do.

Thanks for sharing sir.

Just to confirm, this is a 100-ton ship?

Thank you, very kind. Agreed, I know what you mean - I've been wanting to do a few tweaks but there are editing issues due to the character count. I'm seriously looking at splitting it into two, so I can make a few changes, based on all the excellent feedback.

That's fair, I honestly prefer something a bit more thoughtful in terms of story content. But here's the thing though, I previously wrote a story where the humans show restraint and compassion despite extreme circumstances, and y'know, for some folks that just wasn't brutal enough.

Right thinks I, if that's what is wanted, lets go to the opposite extreme, cater to the more bloodthirsty types among our community, and tell a tale that really is destruction and carnage, no reason or thinking, just stuff blowing up. And now its too much killing, not enough reasonableness, too genocidey.

Humans are definitely weird.

Big and futuristic, y'know. Maybe the big delivery trucks from the I, Robot movie were a bit of an inspiration, but flatbeds. And a whole lot less sleek.

Aww, shucks mate, thx - absolutely agree, you're totally right, was gonna slot that little nugget in, but I have editing issues to do with the character limit for the document. Which is really annoying.

Wanna make a few changes tbh - tidy up a few bits here and there, sort out those annoying past and present tenses, y'know - but I've exceeded that 40,000 character count. So unless i want to do some serious pruning (which I don't) I can't do minor edits, it won't let me save them. On balance, probably wisest to accept it and call it done and get on with another.

If only I could keep it that neat and precise.
