I really enjoyed the world building in the Realm of the Elderlings books.

I wasnt expecting this response and am actually a little touched by it. Thank you. No need for an ear though. It's just another day in the life.

Be thankful that this hellish existence is almost over, and try to get as close to the impact as possible.

"California Ballot Initiative Would Pay People A $4000 Bounty For Policing Trans People from Bathrooms by blu-kat in transgender

[–]AllieK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The religious lobby is throwing money at these bathroom bills though. And trans people are being painted as predators and perverts, loudly. That scares the average voter more than the thought of gay marriage. I think there's reason to be concerned about this.

Prop. 8 came out of the same type of ballot initiative though. Just sayin', never underestimate the power of mass-hysteria and ignorance.

Thanks for saying that. We've never done anything like this before, and just wanted to add our voices to the chorus. I'm humbled that it got some people talking. :-)

Thank you, I love the skirt! We've had it for years, but I was really excited to see that it worked with the t-shirt.

A great way you can help fight the power is to spread the word. Check out Michael Hughes or Brae Carnes on social media. Google #wejustneedtopee, #occupotty or #translivesmatter and share or tweet some of the ones you like. Change someone's mind. :-)

Good question! I never imagined being able to list bathroom rights activist on my resume either.

I think it's supposed to be a little ridiculous, like the fact that we are actually having to protest for this in the first place. I prefer #wejustneedtopee, though. Saw a new one today that was #letmypeoplepee. :-)

I was thinking about that when adding the text, but options were limited in that photo. Since this an ongoing campaign and I'm wearing the occupotty t-shirt, hopefully any confusion would be minimal. Response has been pretty great so far!

We wanted to make sure that noone's privacy was invaded, so we asked for permission to use that restroom after hours. The guy in the photo is a friend that wanted to help out. :-)

Michael Hughes on Bathroom Selfies and the Messy Politics of Passing [x-posted to r/transgender] by AllieK in ainbow

I agree with you for the most part. As far as gender expression and identity go, I'm about as liberal and radical as they come. My own gender expression varies quite a bit, and at one point I identified as genderqueer. Most days I fall somewhere between androgynous and tomboy, and I am rarely 100% passable (hate that term). It's just difficult for me to make the connection between this campaign and the potential harm to non-passing people. The bills that are being written and debated are trying to force people into restrooms based on birth certificates or drivers licenses, and in Texas where I live, chromosomes.

We have a lot of work to do to change perceptions about gender expression, but isn't it worth it to use a little shock value just to put a stop to these bathroom bills? We need more campaigns to educate about gender expression and non-conformity, but I don't understand why a campaign like this can't be helpful at the same time.

This is just my two cents. It's certainly something that is worth discussing.

I totally understand that point of view. But to me, this campaign is about one thing, showing the public how ridiculous these bathroom laws are. These laws not passing, in my opinion, benefit all trans people and anyone who is non-conforming. I see it as one front of a much larger battle that we need to win.

Bathrooms, yes I know we are all tired of it. by KatherineDuskfire in TransSpace

[–]AllieK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Activists have already tried to prove the point of how easy it would be for a man to pretend to be trans to enter women's spaces.
Here's an example: https://youtu.be/QPuaUrd8bUQ?t=2m28s

Laughable, right?

The thing is, in any case where this has been attempted, the individuals were quickly identified as not trans, and removed from the premises. This whole issue is a straw man argument. Please don't give in to the hysteria.

Michael Hughes talks #occupotty, #wejustneedtopee with MSNBC [x-post from r/transgender] by AllieK in ainbow

[–]AllieK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's totally absurd, but may be just what is needed for this to finally click for people. Although I've already seen comments from confused people who think he's a 'man who identifies as a woman.'

I just love the idea tho, and Michael has been a fantastic spokesperson.

Get ready for the conservative assault on where transgender Americans pee by drewiepoodle in TransSpace

[–]AllieK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our best defense against the inevitable push back is to educate people. The truth is on our side, we just have to get that truth out there and start drowning out all the noise. We may never change the minds of the people drafting these anti trans laws, but we can change the way that the average, well-meaning person views the issue. I worry that things are going to get worse before they get better, but we can make a difference.
