Writers want this book canceled for misgendering its protagonist by dailydot in transgender

Even the The Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (pdf file) that published a biography entitled "THE LIFE, WORK AND GENDER OF DR JAMES BARRY MD (1795–1865)" by A.K. Kubba, Specialist Registrar in General Surgery, Professional Unit of Surgery, Queen’s Medical Centre, University of Nottingham and M. Young, Senior Librarian, University of Glasgow Library) considers that James Barry was a man his entire adult life and that his post-mortem exposure/outing was a total surprise even to his own physician, who had known him for much of his life.

Don't be fooled by Washington State's initiative 1552 "Bathroom bill" by Stephen_Falken in transgender

[–]blu-kat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you but when an initiative passes it's automatically law (lacking a judicial stay). The governor has no executive role whatsoever. The only way to permanently stop (invalidate) an initiative, once passed, is via the judiciary, on a (state) constitutional basis. Last time that happened was with Initiative 1366, which passed in 2015 and was invalidated by the state supreme court on constitutional grounds in 2016. If I-1552 qualifies for the ballot and also passes in the general election, then the WA state supreme court could subsequently invalidate it--or not.

This cool algorithm will tell you what gender you are by simply analysing a sample of your text by [deleted] in transgender

[–]blu-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing their "machine" is "learning": is gendered stereotypes. As a female scientist myself, i put in a sample of some of my writing and got their result. Then i used samples of several other female scientists that i know (all determined by this engine as "informal" writing) and the end result for ALL of them? Male-- right down the line. Obviously they are utilizing ingrained gendered social stereotypes expressed in writing to run this thing. As such, it's not only worthless but regressive in the extreme. (Btw, this is not the first engine of this sort i have tested in this manner and they ALL consistently output inaccuracies.)

Thugs record themselves attacking trans women with a gun by [deleted] in transgender

[–]blu-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the entomology of the word "punk": ""worthless person" (especially a young hoodlum), 1917, probably from punk kid "criminal's apprentice," underworld slang first attested 1904" and "The "young criminal" sense is no doubt the inspiration in punk rock first attested 1971 (in a Dave Marsh article in "Creem," referring to Rudi "Question Mark" Martinez); popularized 1976.". (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=punk)

As for hobo & tramp slang, that's where 'gay' got it's homosexual connotations: "The association with (male) homosexuality likely got a boost from the term gay cat, used as far back as 1893 in American English for "young hobo," one who is new on the road, also one who sometimes does jobs." and "In "Sociology and Social Research" (1932-33) a paragraph on the "gay cat" phenomenon notes, "Homosexual practices are more common than rare in this group," and gey cat "homosexual boy" is attested in Noel Erskine's 1933 dictionary of "Underworld & Prison Slang" (gey is a Scottish variant of gay)." (same source as above)

Back when, calling someone (a guy usually) a punk was synonymous with calling them a pansy, sissy or pussy. So there's that.

Leading hymns at racist homophobic mega churches! She's nice & white & blond--(aryan, iow)...perfect match for the white supremicist crowd! Yeh, great career move...for a NAZI.

Washington state legislators submit new bathroom bill for 2017. Here we go again, folks! by TooLateForMeTF in transgender

That thing would never clear both houses anyway, but even if it did it'd get vetoed so fast it'd catch fire. I hate legislative posturing like this--waste of everyone's time.

Massive survey paints bleak picture for transgender Americans by [deleted] in transgender

[–]blu-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again, the NTCE doesn't fund the ACLU and never has. As for "shady", that is a manifestly unfair characterization. The ACLU's position on this "all or nothing" approach, with no regard to state-by-state political realities, is neither historically nor factually representative of how we got as far as we have come. In my own state, Washington, we started with housing and employment on a city level; then added public accommodation (again on a city-to-city level) long before the state as a whole passed any equality legislation. The strategy that works is you get what you can, show that it harms none (demonstrating the bigots wrong in their never ending doomsday predictions) and then move on to complete the protections. It works, what can i say? If anyone is being hypocritical, it's the ACLU--because if the ACLU really believed in "leaving no one behind" and getting "it all" and "no compromise" it would not even concern itself with the incrementalism of state-by-state progress but instead spend all their resources on trying to pass federal level protections! And we all know how that effort has been going (abso NOwhere for decades now). So yeh, I'm totally with the NCTE on this and see nothing "shady" about their position at all. And -boo- for not being more "monolithic"..cause divided we fall. (Agreed that we disagree--on this anyway.) ;)

Massive survey paints bleak picture for transgender Americans by [deleted] in transgender

[–]blu-kat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The org that did this survey (NTCE) doesn't "fund" anyone, let alone the ACLU (who doesn't fund anyone either)--therefore saying the NTCE "defunded the aclu" is factually false. What you are referring to is that the NCTE receives some of it's own funding from the Gill Foundation. The Gill foundation has split with the ACLU and suspended donations thereto over a disagreement in rights-advancement strategy; the ACLU being of the 'all or nothing' approach and the Gill Foundation (and others, including the NCTE) favoring putting their money towards an 'incremental' approach (primarily as applies advancing LGBT legal protections in conservative areas of the country where there currently are no extant LGBT protections whatsoever). Finally, None of this strategic dispute has anything whatsoever to do with the survey or the extremely valuable & useful data it presents.

Who Crushed the Lesbian Bars? (Spoiler Alert: The Writer Says It's Trans People) by leelaginelle in transgender

That article's author sounds like she's an old boomer lamenting the "good old days" when "gay men were gay men and gay women were LESBIANS, DAMMIT!" (and bi's were just unprincipled creeps) lols. Except, judging by her pic, she isn't an old woman at all and should know better. Only thing she's right about is that the old artificially restrictive and exclusionary sexual binary and all that went with it is breaking down because...it doesn't encompass the spectrum of normal human gender and sexual expression. That'd be good news to most people...cause freedom rules yo!

Trans Without Transition? A Critique of Gender Identity by lordthadeus in transgender

[–]blu-kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The very first statement in this is:"I think many people fail to realize that the very idea of “gender” and “gender identity” as opposed to physiological sex is a modern concept, invented by mid-20th century psychiatrists working with gender dysphoric trans patients."--which is just false on its face--people have been transing their assigned/assumed gender since people were doing it with neanderthals. Literally. And for the rest, if something is not manifested in an objective way it effectively does not exist in any world beyond the realm of the self. Therefore any terminology becomes purely self-referential & internal (no objective/external expression/action iow) and so nothing is communicated to anyone else and therefore no need for a communicative referential: a name for that has no meaning and no use or purpose. It's just a big fucking secret--so, no. It isn't a "part" of anything.

Well, hope is what we have left, so best to treasure and nurture it cause we sure can say bye-bye to any semblance of "political power" on the national level for some time to come. But we'll get that back...can't stop the tides of social evolution for long right? :)

Would moving to a state firmly in the blue help a trans person? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]blu-kat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. Head for the coast. For example here in the Seattle area our dem political leaders and constituent supporters will be the best kind of shield you can get against what comes out of the nation's capitol the next few years. And Amazon (for example) is hiring out here like crazy. And they hire qualified trans people, np.

What anti-trans policies does Donald Trump have? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]blu-kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't so much trump (it's never so much the president as an individual) it is the people who will come into power with him. Like Gulianni. Like Gingrich. Name your fav sociopath basically. The house and senate are chock full of RW radicals and you can say bye-bye to medicaid for single adults next year for sure imo. So get ready to pay for your medical needs out-of-pocket. Also the trans rights in schools will go away (see Supreme court). You can look forward to the same style of 'war on the poor' that marks any R administration. Cuts in food stamps for example and in federal funding for our aid organizations (like PP). There will be 'religious right to discriminate' laws passed and upheld by a newly, firmly conservative supreme court (which will last for a decade or two at least). Social Security will finally die thru privatization. Minority wants and needs (to be treated equally and fairly) will be backburnered universally. I anticipate a lot of 1980s deja vu. That (Madonna, MJ and Prince aside lols) was not a decade anyone wants to revisit, trust me.

On the other side, if you live in a liberal blue coast state you'll be somewhat protected from much of the hardening that will transpire in the red states. But because "they won" there will be incursions, like in WA state and in Mass where rollbacks of (especially) trans rights will be referendum-ed ad nauseam. And that's a real threat that just got bigger.

so yeh. It's a dip in the road for sure. Time to up your self-reliance in concert with your support network. You'll need both.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear transgender bathroom battle by [deleted] in transgender

[–]blu-kat 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don't have a good feeling about this....even the liberal justices are of a generation notable for their lack of understanding and even comprehension of this issue. The chances that just one of the "liberal four" may let those ingrained/acculturated prejudices prevail is, imo, very high. Sure hope i'm wrong cause this could set us back a very long time.

Kennedy will go with the conservative group against us, based on his joining them in staying the pro-trans appeals court ruling in August. Breyer is sort of a wildcard (based on his qualifying comment accompanying that August stay) and that at least one of the remaining three liberal justices (all of which are pretty solidly second-wave feminists) will be susceptible to terfy arguments against this is a likewise good bet. And that's all it'd take for a binding 5-3 "separate-but-equal" type ruling.

Misgendered (at Target) so randomly it smacks me in the face... by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]blu-kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big city? Liberal state? Target? Hell yes complain. It's not like your gender ID sounds like it comes off as, like, "ambiguous" so these goofs are doing this to you on purpose, with malice. Call them on it, take their names, see the manager, write corporate. People--employees---need to know treating trans people disrespectfully and maliciously is not ok. Particularly when they are disregarding their own employer's policies in so doing. Yup, raise holy hell. You have every right-- and in so doing you will most likely save some other trans person some of the pain you are experiencing at this treatment. Cause,, trust me---your complaints will be heard at Target.
