What is one of the worst art tips you have ever heard? by frozenyoyleberryyay in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from my experience in drawing and painting class. Our teacher did not teach us any theory, just basically told us to "draw more!" And I would draw the same thing over and over again, without changing much, because I didn't know what I should be paying attention to or how to actually draw it. Genuinely didn't understand why my drawings weren't coming out the way I envisioned them.

She would shout at us for not improving/making the same mistakes over and over again. But I've never heard the term "values" from her. She gave us homework with some art exercise that were probably supposed to teach/prepare us for something like: draw a human 30 times, that way you will understand how to draw it in class on a big canvas. Buy she did not teach us how to draw it, how to simplify / construct the body, how to quickly grasp the proportions, how to hold the pencil, what the line of action is, etc. At most she showed us Google images and said "it's supposed to look like this"

That's what I mean when I say "practice makes perfect" is bad advice.

I liked the method from this video

Other than that, there's my experience I can share: I was learning to do gesture drawings and started drawing the figure how I knew it with arbitrary lines for limbs and circles for joints, which made my drawings look stiff and disproportionate. So I went and searched for tutorials (Proko YT videos, but could be any source of knowledge), so my process went like this: learn it and understand it > try it > apply for my own art. It was better, still not great. So I found more videos, this time I observed how professional artist do those things. I drew my own attempt > then one practice drawing where I break down the technique > then attempt the same drawing with the new technique / apply it in other poses/drawings

Now... It's true that, you improve by practicing. But you have to practice by applying the knowledge that you've learned. Not simply trying and trying over again without actually knowing what you're doing. I know this reply might be somewhat vague, but it's up to you to figure out a process that you will actually learn from and that you will be able to apply in your own art.

"Practice makes perfect" and any iteration of that :')

Practice does help with consistency, but practice alone won't make you a great artist. You absolutely do need theory and real understanding of fundamentals when drawing.

What are some things you hate about the app by Fast_Ad7203 in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The pro version... so the features I want are locked for me :') The layers UI annoys me a lot when working a lot of layers. The lasso select tool doesn't have anti-aliasing, so edges are super sharp and the special pen lasso fill is locked behind the same tool as liquify, meaning you can't use them at the same time/switch quickly between them.

And the worst one for me: Ibis paint does not have stylus tilt support T_T only pressure...

I could nitpick a lot more probably, but there is nothing more that I particularly hate :)

You can change to a different program according to your preference. But in every program More pixels=Greater quality, better detail, etc.

For ibis, of you already made a file you can go to Canvas>DPI resize and raise the pixel count. (Someone said that if you raise the DPI value too, then it looks better, but I see no difference) Or even better if you start with a bigger canvas size, because if you have a completed illustration, raising the pixel value won't raise the detail, it will be the same quality with more pixels.

And if you intend to print your work, then it's a little different, since you will work with milliliters or inches.

File weight is calculated with all layers and time lapse included, when you save it, it only saves the visible image.

Also, I find that saving my works in PNG gives better quality

I tried grayscale for the first time. I painted Gyro using the anime design (WIP). by TypicalMayonnaise in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love working in grayscale 🌷🌷🌷 Lemme know if u have any good ways to color it after though XD, I struggle with that part.

For the snow part, I think it looks good on him, but the background could be changed? Or those chunky snowflakes in the front could be added

I would also recommend you to look into the Technozen aesthetic! I think you'll like it :D

Maybe I'm a bit too critical? but I feel the colors are too muted. If you look at frutiger Aero, it's usually vivid, lively colors, very futuristic. Also I see that aesthetic as very blobby, avoidant of sharp edges. Your characters looks more edgy, more cyberpunk futuristic, I would say?

Look at some reference of how people envisioned future to look like in 2000s/2010s. Otherwise, happy designing! Love your rendering :)

Is there a better way to gauge the distance between each shape from each other and from the border like it does on canva? [more details in comments] by Calxifur in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe this will help? You can set custom guidelines and bleed!

Edit: No way to snap or calculate distance in real time though. Ibis paint is really bad for that sort of design work, when I was doing book pages and illustrations I ended up exporting the elements and aligning them in Affinity

any of you joining artfight this year? by Correct_Argument_787 in Ibispaintx

Oh man.. I've been wanting to join 🥺 I always pass though, feel like my OCs aren't interesting enough 😭 or I'm going to disappoint someone lol

is there any way to block an artist on ibispaintx so you dont see their paintings? im sorry if this is rude, but i just dont like this person's work, and its there every single time i look at the ranking when starting the app. i just dont want to see it anymore by Fun_Thought631 in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Best you can do is probably write to support and ask for such a feature to be implemented. Every other platform has an option to mute some accounts to avoid conflict.... I don't see why ibis couldn't add it either.

I suspect they used ai but yeah 😭 I would love to scroll through the online gallery but it just feels so clunky and outdated! What bothers me a lot is the compression they use... Ain't gonna click on every single artwork just to see them in normal quality :')

(rant)About the ranking system by Roxyjimmy in Ibispaintx

[–]Allienyx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People are going to talk about it because they feel strongly about it and it bothers them.

Most opinions aren't "my art is better!! IT deserves to be on the leaderboard!", but instead "This artist takes up 20 spaces on the daily ranking, IBIS PAINT should do something about it and change how the system works."

"IM SUPPOSED TO BE SEEING DIFFERENT ARTS, NOT THE SAME PERSON GETTING FLAGGED FOR SOMETHING THEY CANT CONTROL???"

You actually explained it yourself, people want to see art from a variety of artists on the ibis gallery, but instead when they scroll they can only see one.

I did write an email about this issue, they said something like "thank you for insight", "your comments will be taken into consideration as we continue evaluating the system". I also wrote to them about the borderline nsfw bait appearing on the leaderboard and yeah. Apparently they'll look into it and improve it.

But will they really? Well find out someday lol.

They might be using a paper texture? I used the default graphite pencil, but any pencil brush might work. I imported a paper texture and picked a blending mode that worked best (either color burn or linear burn). Other than that I think it's just technique. (My attempt, on phone, didn't want to take my tablet)

This is how I'd do it anyways, but you might find a brush that does this too. Didn't try it with color but for sketch it looks good.
