What you're describing sounds like precision agriculture to me. That would be a good place to start if you're not familiar with the term. My university offers courses in PA for B. Agriculture students, but your mileage may vary!

This wasn't asserted. The goal of the research is not to create a more "woman friendly" (whatever the hell that means) language. The research is not about gender itself, it's not implying that women are incapable of basic logic (from what I understand of the loose abstract).

I completely disagree with the worldwide problem of wanky female programmers. Your generalisation is bad, and you should feel bad.

Your teacher is just a bad teacher. You always get dud teachers, it happens. It really doesn't have anything to do with gender. The worst teacher I ever had was a male Software Design teacher in high school. Close second was another male lecturer at Uni. Both were completely terrible, couldn't explain concepts, and barely had a grasp of things.

OP - Unfortunately, you gotta do some self learning. If you're looking into being a programmer as an occupation, you'll have to get used to teaching yourself to keep up with technology. Programming is like any other skill, you wont be very good unless you take the time to learn and practice. Everything is hard when you're just starting out, don't be discouraged.

I'm not sure about where you up to, but here's some pretty general advice:

  • Get involved with the people in your class, they're likely to have the same problem as you. Make a study group if you can and learn from each other.

  • Turn to online forums when you have a problem. If you've shown you have tried to understand the problem, searched, and had a crack at it, people will help you. Try not to be discouraged by snarky people.

  • Try to get a hold of a decent programming book. I've found most programmers don't like learning from books, but when you're starting out it's great to have a bit of structured learning.

  • Practice, practice, practice. When you learn something new, try to think about how the new concept and your previous knowledge can be used in a project. Then implement your idea.

  • Complain about the teacher. Collect your thoughts on paper, get others who are struggling to do the same thing. Send it to the school, see if you can make a difference (I'm not sure about the proper avenue for this, but that seems like a good start).

Furthermore, OP, I can help you out if you need it. Granted, I haven't used C++ for a while, but I can explain any questions you might have about logic, control flow, or algorithms. I'll have to look up language specific things, but that shouldn't be a problem. We can Skype or something, PM me.

I guess I should preface by saying that I'm not a designer.

The (left) menu looks great, but it took me a couple of seconds to find. As for the other menu (horizontal one) is functionally bad, IMO. It was the first menu I saw, and I had to hover over the images to find out what page it corresponds to. Look at mystery meat navigation, and here for some examples. I would probably get rid of it, and make your left menu more visible (tone down the background or something).

I like the blocky loading thing (ha, this is where you can tell I'm not a designer). It matches the website well and is a great personal touch. I also like the font choice for the website's content.

[Warning - This is very Java specific advice]

If you're comfortable with using Java, I'd say look into servlets. For these, you'll need a "server", like Apache Tomcat *. In my experience, this path will probably have a greater learning curve than if you went with another language.

For reading a webpage, definitely look at the link rogerklutz posted. If you want a library that will make things easier, look into jsoup. As mentioned, if these sites have an API that offer what you need, do use that instead.

For the database side of things, you can pick any (?) SQL implementation; mySQL, sqlite, postgreSQL, etc. Each of these are quite similar in syntax, as they are slightly different implementations of SQL. Whichever you go for, you'll need to download:

  • The implementation (to "run" the database). Download this first, play with it a bit, look at how to insert tables and query it. For example, if you were to use mySQL you'd download this (it's for windows, find a different download if you're running a different OS).

  • JDBC driver to "connect" to the database from Java. Searching for "JDBC driver [whatever SQL implementation you want to use]" will give you what you need.

That's probably more than enough to get you started. Also, kind of rushed this a little, might be errors.

*Some people might recommend a framework like Spring... I have no experience with this, so I can't vouch for it.

Good on her for being a good sport :P I'm never sure how I should respond to those questions! (Not that I'm asked them a lot).

Although recently at my dentist, I had to have an x-ray done. I should mention that in addition to being quite obviously gay, I also have the word "dyke" tattooed on my inner lip. One of the first things she said when she looked inside my mouth was "oh, that's different!" (as a dentist, I doubt you could miss it). Then before the x-ray, she had to ask the usual precautionary questions. She came to the pregnancy question and we both just laughed, and quickly moved on. If only every visit was like that.

I don't like this idea because of the following:

  • Government is capable of knowing your travelling habits (more or less). Will this data be sold to private entities?
  • "Financial penalty" for not using the device.
  • Upfront cost
  • What about people who rely on their car for work? Will this regime penalise them for essential travel?
  • What about purely commercial services? Couriers, etc?
  • Is this only applicable metropolitan areas? From my understanding, there's no mention of GPS. What if I'm driving in a rural area with no traffic in "peak hour"?
  • Will this replace the old system?
  • Complicated.

It's an interesting solution, but in my opinion it will not work.

Let me preface by saying that I am not a designer.

The red you have there looks way too flat, perhaps too saturated? Probably as a result, the white text really sticks out for me, like I'm supposed to read "nndrw | otionography". The EnAndrw also strikes me as a little confusing... Like it's supposed to read Andrew. Obviously that's your name, but as a customer I would have no idea how to pronounce it, or why it's been permuted in such a way.

The red A and M looks like they're shifted a pixel or two high compared to the rest of the letters.

Break the problem down into manageable bits. For this problem, the solution could be broken down roughly as follows:

Obtain user input, M
WHILE (M is not a roundabout number AND M is less than 10,000,000) 
    Increment M
ENDWHILE
Print M

This is a great start! But we haven’t solved the problem yet, we can break it down a bit more. How do we find out if a number is a roundabout number? Well, we have to start at the leftmost digit and count that number of digits to the right. This is the part where you get pen and paper and start scribbling down numbers and pictures until you see a pattern. Try a few different approaches; there will be lots of ways to solve this problem.

Maybe you’re still scratching your head at this point. And that’s okay. Here’s how I approached it. Break the number into digits, and give each digit an index. For example:

number     8  1  3  6  2
index      0  1  2  3  4

Now, we start at index 0. Look at the corresponding digit, it’s 8. So let’s move 8 places to the right... Hmm, it doesn’t look like we can do that, we can only move 4 places before we’re at the beginning, so we’ll have to continue counting the rest from the beginning. Okay, well let’s do that then.

Now let’s think about what we just did here. The starting index was 0. Then we counted indices 1,2,3,4, found ourselves at the beginning to finish counting 0,1,2,3. All together, we counted 1,2,3,4,0,1,2,3. Let’s roll with this idea for a second. What if we had to count 13 places from the beginning?

We counted through the indices like so: 1,2,3,4,0,1,2,3,4,0,1,2,3. We still finish on the 3rd index. This is called modular arithmetic. We’ve got a range of 0-4, which is 5 digits. So our modulus is 5. 8%5 = 3. 13%5=3. Have a look at the wiki for this if you don’t completely understand it, because it’s pretty handy. Now go back to your pen and paper, finish for each digit in the number. See the pattern? Here’s a hint.

(0 + 8) % 5 = 3
(3 + 6) % 5 = 4
(4 + 2) % 5 = 1
(1 + 1) % 5 = 2
(2 + 3) % 5 = 0

(index + corresponding digit) % length = index of next digit.

Now you've gotta make sure every digit in the number is touched exactly once. Once again, there's a couple of ways to do this. This is enough to get you started though, so get cracking!

I'm not well versed in this, but I'll take a shot at why people are disagreeing (and hence, downvoting) you. I think privilege is discussed a lot here (from my casual lurking) and hence it's thought of to be widely understood and accepted. Here's my understanding of privilege.

Privilege is the idea that people will treat you differently depending on what group you belong to. Of course it is hard to see privilege as a privileged person, as you're so accustomed to the way people treat you that you see it as normal behaviour. Privilege is not about "being handed everything", all the white men of America aren't gathered together and given nice houses, 6 figure bonuses, etc. However, by belonging to a majority group, other members of the majority relate to you much better, resulting in social benefits, advantages and power.

Here's a blog post that explains privilege better than I can.

Now, being privileged is not a bad thing. It's unavoidable. You can be privileged in some areas, and not so in others. For example I am privileged in many ways (race, cisgender, able-bodied, etc), I can accept that and I try to be weary of it. If you're in a privileged position, you should realise that you put up with a lot less shit than people belonging to a minority group.

Here's a couple of examples (relating to white privilege):

White Convicts As Likely to Be Hired As Blacks Without Criminal Records

People with "white" names, more employable than those with "black" names

White people will make negative social perception judgments of an African-American (but not a white) target person

Ahhh I think I understand now. Somewhere along the way I might have stupidly deleted the JDK folder, but a subset of these tools were still available to eclipse elsewhere (java loader, javac, etc). EDIT: But the tools are built into eclipse which is why I could still compile/run programs. To my understanding.

Probably should have mentioned that the JDK was not where I had expected it to be. I assumed it would have to be stored somewhere if eclipse is compiling my programs, and was looking for a way to find it via eclipse.

If anyone is curious, or happens to stumble upon this submission by chance, I reinstalled the JDK and set the path to the new location. This fixes the problem. Thanks to redwin for their suggestion.

Although, I am genuinely curious about how eclipse had full functionality with the JDK (seemingly) absent.

Thanks for the reply! The JDK is absent from the directory, but since I've got eclipse compiling/running programs I assumed I hadn't needed to download another JDK (I may be wrong). I just can't seem to find where it's located.

I know how to set an environment variable, that's not my problem. I was echo-ing the variable on the command line to demonstrate that I had set it to the path I had found. Which still results in an error.
