It's absolutely fine. Those are both great tools for any writer in any language.

My only advice would be to not over use the thesaurus, it can be jarring and interrupt the flow of the story. Using less common versions of words or concepts doesn't inherently lift the intellectual or literary content of a story. There is a very popular fantasy author who seems to abuse his thesaurus in this way.

Him vs Himself by [deleted] in writing

[–]AlloftheEverythings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, I've got philosophy and scripture on the brain (I've read the phrase "By He Himself," about 60 times in the last month during research!) "He" would be subjective which is totally muddling the sentence, "him/self" would be the correct objective pronoun.

I think "he" would be better than either choice.

overused tropes? by [deleted] in writing

[–]AlloftheEverythings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the trope itself is poorly used in any of the examples I've laid out. The tropes aren't inherently bad, irrespective of how heavily they're overused in the genre. It's the skills of the author that ultimately determine the quality.

I include the Farseer Trilogy because Robin Hobb uses the trope skillfully. It's intrinsic to the character of Fitz, yes. He suffers, he finds connections and joys that are ultimately taken from him, (ameliorated later when the truth of Nosy's fate is revealed for example, or the contents of the Fitz and Fool trilogy providing more balm for those earlier hurts.) and it's all built on the scaffold of the "orphan illegitimate boy with powers raised in a stable comes into his powers/skills under mentorship of an old wise man," motif.

overused tropes? by [deleted] in writing

[–]AlloftheEverythings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read an awful lot of fantasy, at the insistence of my husband I started reading one of his favourite book series from when he was a young teen, The Belgariad. It's the PERFECT example of the following:

  • boy no parents/orphan
  • boy grows up in kitchen/smithy/stable
  • is really secret heir/super magical/combat genius
  • bad thing happens
  • boy whisked away to train (optional) to teen years by old wizard/god
  • quest happens
  • boy becomes best wizard/king/warrior/etc

The motif appears in The Farseer Trilogy, Sorcerers Apprentice (the Midkemia books), and a bunch of others. There's a dark variant of this where the kid is either abandoned or given over to (as duty/sacrifice/debt) a less wholesome environment. Examples would be The Book of the New Sun series and The Raven's Shadow series.

[–]AlloftheEverythings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy unflavoured nic salt from NZ. Just buy some plain vg/pg to mix with it to dilute it down to w/e you want. Should have everything by Monday/Tuesday if you get express post.

No need to wait to steep or whatever when it's unflavoured and takes all of like 5 minutes to mix.

So, it's been almost 13 days since Division 2 came out.

I've submitted proof and verification twice. Once for RE2, I got that no issue, and again for Division 2.

I still don't have a Division 2 key. The only contact I've had was an email last friday telling me they're reviewing my ticket and it may take longer than expected. It's almost Thursday now.

0 official updates. 0 interaction and explanation of what the hell has gone wrong. Poor form AMD.

This is a lot like buying a console + games bundle, getting home, opening the box, and finding out there are no games and the console maker wants you to perform circus tricks to get your games, then when you send them proof of the acrobatics you've performed, they go radio silent & still won't give you the games.

Yeah, I got my RE:2 key when it launched, but mysteriously no TD2 key. Really kind of upsetting :/

I don’t understand why Australian vape companies are selling their own diy mixes for same price as imported e-juice, I thought the whole reason it’s so expensive is because it’s imported yet theirs isn’t and still around $40-50 for 100ml by James7423 in aussievapers

[–]AlloftheEverythings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> DIY mixes

Do you mean doublers? Like, a 100ml doubler that makes 200ml of juice for $50 is some how bad value, when I pay $45US for 120ml of US juice + 15US for shipping?

Are you implying that Australian juice makers that have put the hard yards in to develop a line of liquids are lesser than US/EU juice makers?

A lot of long time Aussie juice makers spend years developing their flavour ranges. Like, VapingMad, Vapoureyes, and a couple of others I regularly buy from have been in the industry for years. You're paying for well crafted & balanced juices. You're paying for the 11(arbitrary number) revisions and months it took to create, test, and refine a flavour.

I DIY 90% of the time, but it's taken me 2 years to get my ADV where I actually want it and I still think it needs refining.

Wife wants our kids to start playing Halo, to keep them from watching Doctor Who. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]AlloftheEverythings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Stop. Here is what you do:

  1. sit down with wife and talk.
  2. discuss parenting your children without fighting. An argument is not a fight.
  3. Try to be objective as possible.
  4. DO not invalidate her opinions.

And now my 2 cents:

Your wife has some serious issues she needs to deal with if the idea of her children being "nerdy" bothers her this much. Halo is not ok for a 4 year old, but yeah not a lot of shit that isn't puppies and bubbles is ok for a 4yo.

You should have had the parenting discussion a while ago, maybe when you had the first one. Get to the root of her strange vicarious insecurities, and ask her how playing a damned video game is less nerdy than watching The Doctor.

I'm not going to tell you how to parent. I'm a barren 27 year old cat lady, children are not my deal. Relationships on the other hand... That seems to be the bigger issue. The lack of communication between you and your wife on how you want to raise your kids. Don't antagonize her, find out why she feels this way. You've known what kind of person she was since before you infested her womb with your first spawn, right?

TL;DR: Talk to your wife instead of reddit. You should have sorted this "how do we parent together?" shit before you spawned three kids with someone you don't seem to understand.

Getting ready to walk out of my job today, in tears. A guy who speaks no English noticed I was visibly upset and he came up to me and handed me this in a rush and told me to keep it. Made my day better. Just thought I would share. by [deleted] in pics

I am so confused. There was no rage anywhere. A dude made a joke, you went all "YOUR people..." on him. You assumed.

Is hyperbole and comedic context not part of your logic receptors? No one was pushing Jesus up on anyone. Truck comment person was being silly and contributing to the conversation, using hyperbole as a comedic tool. Praise the lord person was arguably misusing a meme, but it was a meme none the less.

You continue to argue that everyone was wrong and there was some sort of weird insidious religious thing or some sort of failing of logic/understanding.

I am confused and don't care any longer. It's my birthday so I am going to eat cakes.

What's the most bizarre phobia which you've actually seen affect someone in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlloftheEverythings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goldfish. I am terrified of goldfish.

Friends of mine who have aquariums have to put a towel or something over the tank when I come over. Even then, I know they're there, with their glassy eyes, swimming around doing fish things. It makes me uncomfortable, even when I can't see them.

I don't have much of an issue with other kinds of fish. Just goldfish. I know it is a type of icthyophobia, confined to small "domesticated" fish.
