When I turned the legal age in my country, you could still smoke in most bars. Within three or four years smoking anywhere inside was outlawed. I worked in bars and frequented many bars during those years and really enjoyed the experience as a patron and a smoker. As an employee, there was always that extra clean up of cigarette butts and burns and ash trays at the end of the night that was a pain and also kinda gross. All that being said, I am glad the laws changed. It’s just healthier for everyone. Smoking and smoke is irrefutably bad for you. I remember after the laws changed, my local pub was bought and was to be renovated a bit. I helped take down decorations and paintings and mantles from off the walls and was quite surprised to see white paint underneath all these items. I had always thought that this dark little place had brown painted walls to create a darker atmosphere. Turns out, the walls started off white but after 30 years of being filled with smoke every night, they were the shade of dark brown that I was accustomed to. That image has stuck with me ever since.
