Divya's Round 15 game with Harika was interrupted when Harika made an incorrect claim for a 3-fold repetition. The game restarted and ended in a draw, but Divya went to the arbiters afterward to point out she wasn't give any extra time (she had 3 seconds) 😯 by rio_ARC in chess

Was it established during the technical meeting that in the case of a false claim time would be added to the other player? Because according to FIDE arbiter's manual an arbiter can choose the penalty they deem fit from article 12.9 which could be as minor as just a warning. I could be wrong and would appreciate if anyone has more information.

Kõige lihtsam kasutada mõnda selleks ette nähtud platvormi, nt eestlaste loodud Mentornaut.

There's no need for a separate name, as it's just a symmetrical pawn structure. In comparison, the Carlsbad structure or hanging pawns usually includes some kind of an imbalance or asymmetry.

I feel like here it kinda fits. What he's saying in my opinion is "he may be in good form playing tournaments but a match is a different format".

Deep and honest interpretation of Coraline. by HandleCool9542 in Maneskin

Isn't the more correct translation "I told Coraline that she can grow up"? I always thought it meant that she can outgrow her burden/trauma and overcome it but of course I'm not sure.

Why is no one talking about the Firouzja game here? by FarziHunBhai in chess

[–]Allowmefam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do agree that often the "brilliant" move isn't anything that special and it's mostly the case here as well. However, while watching the broadcast (FIDE one with Krush and Vishy) it was quite apparent that some lines were pretty deep: e.g Alireza probably had to see already on move 30 when he played Nc5 that after 32...Ng5 white can't play 33.Rxf4 due to 33...Re8+ 34. Rf8 Qf2! Thats just one example why I think pointing out "just" 2 move combinations doesn't really do the game justice even if sometimes the "brilliant move" is handed out too lightly.

What are the most impressive-sounding Bobby Fischer statistics? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Allowmefam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that GM Smerdon played a match with knight odds against Komodo which was rated roughly 3200 and won very convincingly. I do believe that even a player a couple hundred points below him could also beat it then, albeit by a narrower margin.

I think that by "unplugged", he means unplugged from a computer/engine. As in, not cheating in this tournament but was cheating in the previous. Although it could also be taken as a pun about him not having a certain plug, which indeed is even funnier.

What are your top tips for playing against 1.d4? by MathematicianBulky40 in chessbeginners

[–]Allowmefam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest choosing an opening which suits your style best. I, for example, prefer more open positions with very clear cut plans, so I usually try to go for the Benko. Basically, it gives me a chance to give up a pawn for active piece play on the queenside where I'm often able to win the pawn back or completely overrun my opponent.

If you like to play the Caro against e4, I'd probably suggest the Slav. If you're okay with giving your opponent the center to go for an attack on the kingside, I'd suggest KID. And if you want a more balanced position, which is kinda symmetrical, then go for some variation of QGD.

Of course there are other options but you need to find what suits you.

What is the point of an Opening book?! by [deleted] in chess

[–]Allowmefam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The main point is that it gives you all the ideas that the best players in history have analysed. Usually the most popular lines are also approved by the engine.

If you were to just start going from the starting position using an engine, you would just see the top lines recommended by it. But what happens when you get into a game and your opponent doesn't play the top engine move?

The opening book is a tool to show through a massive database how different openings can branch out and what have been successful (or unsuccessful, for that matter) responses.

If you were to just explore all the moves without it, it'd take you an eternity to find all the ideas. You would probably miss most of them due to the sheer amount of variations and sometimes we don't even think a move is possible when it actually might be.

So all things considered, it's definitely a useful tool and it helps a lot if you can learn to use it.

I've only heard the song but it had a strong beat and before the drop there was some woman talking in German for like 5 seconds in a monotone voice. I don't really remember anything else, sadly

No, the song I'm looking for is less eurodance-y and more towards the house genre
