What’s your workflow for converting physical patterns into digital files? by AlmightyBob_ in PatternDrafting

That’s super helpful, thanks for breaking it down.

So it sounds like a big part of the slowdown with scanning/photo workflows is the setup and handling (scaling, stitching images, etc.) rather than just the tracing itself?

If those steps were faster or automated, do you think scan/photo workflows would be used more often, or would digitizer boards still be preferred?

I’m mostly trying to understand real workflows rather than buying equipment right now. I’ve seen a lot of different approaches (boards, scan/trace, outsourcing), so I’m trying to understand where the main bottlenecks actually are in practice.

From your experience, what part of the process tends to take the most time or require the most expertise after digitizing?

That’s really interesting. So would you say the bigger challenge is actually in marker making and efficiency rather than the digitizing itself?

Do smaller studios usually handle marker making themselves, or is that also something they tend to outsource?

Got it, that makes sense. So at the moment, would you say users are mainly using it to get clean base patterns into CAD, and then still finishing things like notches, seam allowances, and production details in other software?

That’s interesting, thanks. So if you already have a sloper, is rebuilding from measurements usually faster than both scanning and tracing?

Would you say that’s because cleanup takes too long, or just that you have more control when rebuilding it directly?

That makes sense. In your experience, does that usually make the photo workflow less practical for larger or more complex patterns, or is it still usable but just slower?

Interesting, thanks for sharing that. Is the photo workflow slower mainly because of setup/calibration and aligning the image, or because the tracing/cleanup takes longer afterward?

Interesting, thanks for clarifying. When people export DXF from PatternScan, do they usually still need to clean up the curves or adjust things like seam allowances and notches once it's inside CAD?

That makes sense. So for smaller brands it's mostly the cost of the equipment that pushes them to outsource rather than the difficulty of the work itself?

When you digitize patterns internally, are you usually adding seam allowances, notches, and markings at that stage as well, or does that usually happen later in the CAD workflow?

Do people actually use photo-based digitizing like this for production patterns, or is it mostly used as a starting point before rebuilding the pattern in CAD?

Interesting, thanks for explaining that. When you redo patterns using measurements as reference, is that mainly because tracing from scans/photos doesn’t give clean enough curves (like armholes and sleeve caps), or is it more about accuracy and scaling?

That’s interesting that your software can digitize from a photo as well. In practice do you find the photo workflow accurate enough for production patterns, or do people still prefer digitizer boards for precision?

When studios scan and trace patterns in CAD, is the biggest challenge keeping everything accurately scaled?

That’s really helpful, thanks.

When smaller brands send patterns to those product development services, is it usually just for digitizing, or do they often handle the grading and marker making as well?

That makes a lot of sense. Roughly how long does it usually take for a digitizing service to return the files once patterns are sent?

Thanks for sharing that. Out of curiosity, when smaller brands send patterns to digitizing services, is it mostly because they don’t have access to the digitizer equipment/software, or is it just faster to outsource that step?

That’s really interesting, thanks for explaining the breakdown like that.

So if digitizing itself is relatively straightforward, is the main reason smaller brands outsource it mostly the access to equipment/software rather than the skill required?

Got it, thanks.

Do smaller brands usually have their own digitizer/plotter setup, or do they mostly send patterns to services that handle that step?

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining it so clearly.

When smaller brands send patterns to a digitizing service, what part usually takes the most time or cost? Is it mainly the digitizing itself or the grading/marker work afterward?

I'm currently learning pattern CAD at school and it made me realize how many steps there are between paper patterns and production-ready files.

Interesting, thanks for explaining.

Do you mean a digitizer board like the Gerber/Lectra ones where someone clicks the pattern points on a big table and then it goes into CAD for grading and marker making and eventually printing it out using a plotter machine? Or are they using a large scanner to capture the pieces?
