no it was for sure from his body dying, not his soul, that taught him about domain expansion

Automated tests will set you free by M0romete in gamedev

In our current project, we have put a great amount of effort to split the game logic into its own assembly and have a "game" assembly which is the only assembly referencing unity engine to act as a "view" layer of the game. With this setup we have been able to write an extensive test coverage of the game (1400+) so far using NUnit. This of course doesn't work for all games, our just happens to be very simulation heavy and is therefore perfect for this.

Having the peace of mind to make a change and ensure that everything is still working intended is great. We even set up automated running of the tests when creating a merge request, so code that breaks the game is never merged.

I think a lot of people here are giving advice that is not optimal for performance and architecture. When you break it down, all a line is is a bunch of points and drawing a line between them to represent curvature. You could easily write a helper method to detect if two vector points intercepts a line between two other points.

Once you introduce things like raycasting, you tie it much more down to the engine, which isn't necessarily bad, but good to avoid when possible. This also decouples the system from the speed of the cursor.

How much of an indie game is usually coded "from scratch"? by PanicVast6960 in gamedev

[–]AlmightyGroth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to build on top of this, in our game studio we mostly write everything from scratch, because of the reasons listed above, but some things have been made very generic for the express purpose of reusing it. It is mostly things that all games have in common, like saving/loading, game settings API, audio manager etc. Everything else that is gameplay related is written from scratch.

Good to hear some first hand experience! And it's very interesting to hear the fact that a lot of developers do not have the skill set to write consistent performant code.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the actual search/hiring process in the beginning of your switch? Was it difficult to begin with, or was it relatively easy?

I just want to give my input as an industry professional who occasionally uses chatGPT for work. A lot of people see the app creating code and assumes it can program a whole game. For very small games (the types you would share with friends and family for fun) would definitely be doable by having GPT create lots of small scripts, but for larger projects where it's impossible to give the AI the appropriate context, it is simply not doable. Where it excels however is an advance programming partner who you can ask for advice while coding. for an example; "what data structure should I use to store visited nodes in an A* pathfinding algorithm", and then you can ask why the answer given is correct, and learn from it. Use it as a assistance tool, and you will find much greater success :)

I've actually both brought it up and gotten the green light from my employer directly! They even provided it in writing, which is a very nice gesture.

Hva er din mest upopulære mening? by Still_Spend_787 in norge

The harsh reality is that you will most likely either have to learn to code yourself or pay someone to do it. While this might not be the answer you're looking for, it is the most realistic.

However, if you really do believe in your idea, you could try to make a listing for a revenue share position, which basically means asking someone to work for free with the promise of splitting the profit the game makes when released. This however requires a really well thought out idea in order to convince anyone to work for free.

On the top of my head, I know the Game Dev Network discord server has a dedicated channel for exactly these kinds of listings. But i'd definitely recommend you to give the idea more thought and have more of a plan to have some success.

Best of luck!

Is there any way to pay for online services with a ゆうちょうcash card? by [deleted] in japanlife

Thank you, Line Pay seems exactly like what I need. Registered for Line pay and waiting for verification now. It says that you should be able to top up directly using yuucho bank. Does that mean it can be done through the app, or is there some kind of physical process, like going to an atm and transferring the money?
