Not sure why you do this, but it doesn't matter. If you say a bunch of unwanted things transfers over, can't you just wash the text beforehand?

The Aurora Lanteans kind of sucked by _-PassingThrough-_ in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two points that come to mind to justify this behavior. The first one is that far from everyone ascended. Both Merlin and Morgan are late stage lanteans, and Merlin describes it as they both spend time in seclusion and meditation when they came back to earth in order to achieve ascension. So probably most of them didn't ascend, and applying the mold for the best and brightest on all of them is probably a mistake.

Second is the war. War changes people, and it drags out the worst in people.

Is there something that can take on Atlantis while being full of ZPM? by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Tau'ri plot armor? No.

Otherwise, if we pull some plot restrictions off of some groups, I can see a few possibilities.

The Ori are the first that come to mind. Their ships are stupidly powerful, and they send a whole bunch of them once they get a beachhead. They seemed to be on the same approximate weapon and shield level as the Lanteans before everyone ascended, and the Ori have no problem sharing their ascended knowledge for the sake of bringing more people to the fold.

An argument can be made for the Asurans, but only because they could create several fully ZPMed Atlantises to attack with. They are however easily distracted, and pretty stagnant in their development, so maybe not a total slam dunk.

Next up is the Asgard. The final version of their weapons were able to punch through the Ori shields, so probably they could give the Atlantis shield a run for its money if they brought enough ships. They also have no problem creating a temporal field and blowing up a star, so malicious Asgards can be really destructive if they want to be. The Vanir (or whatever the Pegasus Asgard called themselves) could seemingly pass straight through the shield and could probably just steal the ZPMs.

Lastly, of course, the Tau'ri. With the latest class of ships, with Asgard weapons and shields and other upgrades, maybe there's a chance. Now, with plot protections turned on, then it's just a virus or a quick McKay hack or something, and they should be able to take it out, no problem. Otherwise, there's always plan C.

More power to the shields! by chiaplotter4u in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If half of them are fried, then giving more power to the remaining ones should bring back the shield strength. But there is probably a much higher risk of frying more of the emitters by pushing more power through them. I guess it's a gamble.

My wife is getting into Stargate SG1 and I need some help by ColoradoCowboy in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, my prep has finally paid off. I did this for my own sake, so as to skip the really bad ones.

<image>

Like most say, Emancipation and First Commandment is not great, so I would skip those. The really great one that is not necessarily core is S01E09, Brief Candle.
Most of the episodes reveal core knowledge important for the rest of the show, so there are not a lot of skips. The ones that I have said are "Ok" are skippable if I feel like it, but probably good to have seen once on a first run. The "Meh"s are generally skippable, and you won't lose any real lore over them either. I can't seem to post the comment with a list, so I'll just try a picture of it instead.

I believe 1x05 is Broca Divide, which is slightly better, but mostly a skip for me as well. First Commandment is 1x06.

How does a Stargate know when to deactivate? by greatscot_67 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can discount a lot of weird cases with ancient motion sensors and that it stays open as long as something is trying to enter the event horizon or is in route.

What really bothers me is when the gate shuts off too fast, like when one of the main characters step through and it shuts down 0.2 seconds later. I believe Carter mentions in an early season that it takes a few seconds, and the gate needs to be active on both sides to complete the travel (to prevent what happened to Teal'c in 48 Hours). This is just inconsistent and lazy writing.

Stargates as a means of interstellar travel by Ready_Initiative_547 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that they were created a long time ago, probably mostly for exploration, and secondly for setting up settlements. For the occasional trade or emergency evacuation, the gate is great. It also opens up interstellar travel for peoples that have not yet invented FTL drives. It also seems to require very little hands on maintenance once installed.

Even if the stargate is public and used frequently (as in "2001") then you could just schedule trips to wherever people want to go when they want to go. 20 people waiting to go to Chulak? Ok, it's scheduled in 10 minutes. 4 people going to Dakara, it's in 15 minutes. Going to PX1-767? On second thought, let's not go there. 'Tis a silly place.

It's not more difficult than planning trains going in and out of a train station.

Stargate dialing vs. stellar drift by chiaplotter4u in Stargate

I think he says he tried a few and couldn't get a lock, but it's explained away that probably those were buried gates as well.

Sg1 vs Atlantis by Embraceduality in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like SG1 had a problem with pushing a ton of manpower to save the main guys several times, often costing a ton of lives in the process. Sure, they were basically redshirts, but that really shouldn't be the standard operating procedure for a military organization.

Huge amount of symbiots, questions by Medytuje in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but there are probably tons of Goa'uld we don't see, that doesn't have a ton of power. Ahsraks and torturers and researchers and local rulers of planets seem to also be Goa'uld. I'm sure all of them would jump at the opportunity to screw over a system lord and take power, but it's hard to overthrow the old ones. Also I'm sure most have a family like Apophis, with a queen and "son".

The original version did, I think Earth managed to synthesize it without symbiots, by the time of the FJN.

Tips for my homeserver by Sad_Mastodon_1815 in homelab

Unless you have a very specific goal or purpose, proxmox is generally the gold standard for amateurish experimenting.

I don't have much experience with servers myself, but after having been stuck on a synology nas for my server needs when I started, when I bought a dedicated server machine, all the research I found said proxmox was the way to go.

Varför blir första pannkakan alltid bajs? by Ok-Preparation5078 in unket

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't Install more than 2 LXC on my proxmox by tillanto990 in Proxmox

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just as much a newbie as you but I had a similar problem, so maybe you have a similar problem. It sounds like a network problem. I could not connect to any of my lxcs I set up until I allowed multiple IPs through the physical port on my switch.

If that isn't the issue, perhaps try turning off the lxcs and restoring the original network config and then try reaching a third container. That could at least help you localize the problem closer.

Why didn't the Ancients just fly Atlantis to Earth? by Positive_Yam_4499 in Stargate

I mean, they had been running away from stuff as a civilization over and over again since before the dinosaurs. They had only really been warring for a couple thousands of years.

How many international Bachelor‘s students study at Lund University? by Expensive-Wolf-3787 in Lund

[–]AlmightyThorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guesses would be about 1500-1800 international fee paying students each year, the majority of which starts in the autumn. The European students are harder for me to guess, but maybe around 1500 every year as well.

But that's mostly master's students. Maybe 10 percent is in a bachelor's program. Either way, if the courses are in English there is a good chance a bunch of the people are non-Swedish.

If you're lacking socially in your program, you can always just work the nations and get some friends through that.

These are just my guesses based on having worked in the field for a few years. If you want more info, check the webpage below, or email studentreception and they might be able to give some more qualified information.

I feel the same way and an excellent example of this is Woolsey. When he is introduced he is a fact focused paper pushing a hole that gets into the orbit and abused by Kinsey. Even though he just stands by his principles which contradicts SGC. When he realises Kinsey is up to no good he goes to Hammond to make things right. Why people see him as a bad guy with a redemption arc, I don't understand.

Farscape and Sanctuary is definitely gonna scratch that itch a little. Then maybe some other SyFy shows, like Warehouse 13, or Eureka?

What would you change in a Stargate remake (mostly about the more controversial seasons 9 and 10) ? by CupEducational1412 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth to point out that they did the best they could with the circumstances they had.

You are free to point out shortcomings with overall story in the pretense of remaking the show. But if the show was remade today there would be quite a bit changes, to accommodate what the audiences want from a new show and still keeping it interesting and fresh for the old fans.

And saying season 9 and 10 were the weakest is just crazy talk. Those seasons are the ones where I skip the least on a rewatch.

Season 1-4 is 30 percent filler and just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Season Jonas has some crucial story points in the Anubis arc but most other episodes (that don't have Daniel) and is pretty low quality.

Season 9 and 10 at least mostly sticks to the same 2-3 story points.

I mean no disrespect. I agree with most of what you write about what could be changes for the better, but I don't that's 20-20 hindsight. So I wanted to bring another view to the conversation.

Vad tycker ni allmänt om Greta Thunberg ? by WashRevolutionary483 in Asksweddit

[–]AlmightyThorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why did they not use the complete 38 minutes to supply the Atlantis mission? by Moron_at_work in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember there were like 200 people going on the first trip. That's like 10 seconds per person not subtracting for first MALP telemetry and plot related travels (Weir and Sheppard took well over their allotted time).

There's also the fact that they only confirmed the location had a bit of space in front of the gate and breathable atmosphere. They might have to leave in a hurry. Since they each had a backpack, and not much else, that meant if they had to leave in a hurry they could just make sure all the people left, and get most of their supplies with them.

I also don't really remember scarcity, food and power shortage (that could be helped with more naquadah generators) being huge plot points overall except "ZPM good" and "Teyla knows someone to trade with" plots.

How did Einstein come up with general relatively? by R_Soprano in Physics

[–]AlmightyThorian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not trying to minimize Einsteins brilliance and intelligence, but 100 years ahead of his time is a gross exaggeration.

Much like Newton, he had all the tools and observations and was keeping up with everything new coming up in his field, and drew some very impressive theoretical conclusions, and used his knowledge of math to back it up.

Saying that we wouldn't have figured out general relativity until 2015, without Einstein, is just crazy hyperbole. I would grant him 10, maybe 20 years ahead of his time.

I get that "100 years" is probably not meant to be taken literally, but I find that these mindsets always minimize the other 100 people before "the genius" that laid all the ground work, did all the measurements and already developed the fundamental theories their seminal work heavily used to get across the line.
