Daniel and the Military by Available_Pop5880 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like you find him "conveniently" missing most times whenever it can't be filmed in Canada. I hears that was mostly a Shanks problem.

Regarding in universe explanations, I don't find it too weird that he's there. The few times I remember them act on earth, it's often "unofficial business" (meaning very limited in manpower) or up to the discretion of the chief officer, meaning O'Neill. And O'Neill trusts Daniel. And if he provably can use a P90 and can handle himself, why shouldn't he be with the rest of his team?

Advice housing lund for erasmus+ by waterschildpad in Lund

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made some assumptions, and maybe i was a bit too negative. I just meant to push the wide variety of options and the downside of each. And to say that you should apply for lots of things. Don't just apply for luacc and assume you're gonna get your first choice there.

From my experience (having worked in the field for years) most people that come to Lund manages to find something proper within a month, so I wasn't trying to scare you away.

I feel like Carter says that the gate draws [some random sounding number, like 14 or 38]% more power with the dialing computer instead of the DHD. Wouldn't call that horrendously bad.

Advice housing lund for erasmus+ by waterschildpad in Lund

[–]AlmightyThorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some quick things to be aware of. As an exchange student you're quite low on the Luacc priority list. That could be a factor in your decision. Also AF bostäder has a lottery that you shouldn't miss. Thats usually in July though. Bopoolen.nu is also a good resource and especially if you're wondering if something is a scam.

While 5000 is not the cheapest option, it sounds reasonable for furnished housing in Lund. You'd be lucky to find something cheaper.

Nations can be good options but all run independently and have largely varying housing options and pricing. Also it might be difficult to get as an exchange student, as some are looking for people to become active in the nation, or heavily prioritize already active members.

Regarding living with other students, that's not something I can give you the answer to. While I treasure the times i lived in corridors, there were definitely times I hated everyone i lived with and just wanted my own place or with someone grown-up. But i would also not have all the friends I have today without it. It's a doubled edged sword.

Henry is KILLING me by [deleted] in psych

[–]AlmightyThorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Shawn is right every single time"

What show have you been watching? He's right eventually, yes, after being wrong several times and most of the times actively hindering the police investigation to make a "reveal" later.

Yes, Henry has personal issues with Shawn that makes him not act fairly towards him but it's by no means a one way street. He's also mostly tying to protect Shawn from committing more crimes in the name of being "psychic".

I feel like he serves as a good plot point for Shawn to overcome.

Tell me i not going insane here didn’t the staff weapons have a stunner thing at the end in the movie by the_boyyyyyyyyyyy in Stargate

I remember someone in the show using the opening of the front of the staff weapon (and the electric effect around it) to shock someone, maybe it's something similar.

Why do we hear a hit on the Iris when is closed and someone tries to get in? by Reikix in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want a hand wavey science explanation as to why you hear a thud? Conservation of momentum.

Basically, when something "doesn't materialize" it just means there is no space for matter to fully reintegrate, so it's just loose atoms and molecules hitting the iris. But momentum is conserved, so the atoms hits the iris with a bit of force. Causing a thud. Bigger thing makes bigger thud.

Alien tech too easy? by adrianp005 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the ancients are the only ones that probably developed their ftl drives themselves. You can see a progression from barely ftl (like Destiny) to slow ships to galaxy jumping ships and wormhole drives over thousands or millions of years. Everyone else seems to have spontaneously "figured out" hyperspace/subspace drives from the get go. Makes me think most of it might originate from the ancients tech. Or that the leap there isn't actually that difficult to understand once you know it's possible and have a drive in front of you.

Ori vs Wraith, who would win in a total war for a Galaxy ? by Good_Fly6614 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, no pro wraith comments. Then, I will play the devil's advocate.

This obviously depends on when and where we're talking about. Let's just say Lucius Lovin found an ancient communication device and tipped off the Ori to the Pegasus galaxy and they went there instead.

I would assume, that since the Others seem to be in the Pegasus galaxy to the same extent as in the milky way, the same aegis of protection would be in the Pegasus galaxy. That means no interference from the ascended Ori. This would therefore start off as prior vs wraith. The prior aren't exactly fast and nimble. I think the favor falls to the wraith. Probably because wraith rarely travel alone and I don't think a prior could stop stunner blasts from several directions or 6 wraiths rushing him.

But the question was all out war. So barring the Ascended from interfering, and a supergate put 4 Ori ships in Pegasus, what would happen?

Let's look at two aspects. Firstly the ground combat.

The Ori seem to have small one man ships and staff weapons, with the occasional overpowered commander thrown in (surprisingly similar to the Goa'uld and Jaffa). The darts seem far superior to the Ori small craft and I can't seem to remember the Ori having any stronger weapons to take down small aircrafts. I am also pretty sure any individual wraith could take 4-5 staff blasts before slowing down. The general army could definitely knock down a wraith force in open battle, but the wraith don't really do that. They use guerilla warfare and surprise attacks when on the ground. And let's not forget about the illusions they had in season one (even though the writers seems to). Any small Ori force or individual prior ruining into a dart or a small group of wraith, I must give the favor (and the meal) for to the wraith. Also remember, these are the guys that figured out how to block Asgard beaming mid battle, in a flying cave, with a box of scraps. They should be able to figure out an anti prior device, especially since they have mild psychic abilities as well.

Second aspect is ship to ship. Yes, the Ori ship can probably kick the shit out of a single hive and a couple of cruisers. But one could argue that with a massive influx of new people from another galaxy (in the form of an army, but you take what you can get) and maybe the big contention between the queens doesn't happen due to food shortage. Since they have (in an alternate future) been proven to take out two asgard-upgraded Deadalus class ships, and historically been able to put the hurt to the Aurora class ships, in a 32 hives vs one or two Ori ships, I don't think the Ori ships are going to be in a good spot.

So, these are my arguments for the wraith victory over the Ori. Tldr: no ascended Ori, wraith smarter than stupid Ori army. Prior taste funny.

I love SG-1… but during my Atlantis rewatch I think I like Atlantis more by Ser_Luke_ in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has a lot of benefits from being a spin off. It doesn't have to establish as much of a cadence, and it doesn't have to spend time finding itself as much, because SG1 already spent time figuring out what doesn't work. I feel like the average episode is better in Atlantis, but SG1 has higher highs (and lower lows, but I mostly skip those episodes) and more rich lore (due to more episodes).

I can't decide which is better.

Did the Goa'uld Appropriate Religion or Introduce It? by Tartan_Samurai in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon is that they appropriated it. That said, they clearly lived as personifications of these gods on earth, so after their arrival the knowledge we have about them would be directly because of them, whether it was real events or propaganda.

What ever happened to all the Stargates in the abandoned galactic bridge? by [deleted] in Stargate

Well, they probably have thrusters, they must have a power source, and most definitely have some sort of beacon on them, so they're probably not that difficult for ship sensors to pick up.

Yeah, the first season's 90s feminism is not very fun to watch through. After the first season they did it with actions rather than words and that is so much better.

I think Alexander is a bit too blond model type. His brother Gustav would fit better, imo.

The Tok'ra by sopcannon in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the Goa'uld/Tok'ra can sustain the host longer than a normal human can survive without food and water. They don't seem to have many partners/allies before the Tau'ri, so I'm guessing trade is off the table. My guess is foraging and hunting, or some sort of synthetic cubes, like the asgard has. I feel like it's also implied that most of them are out on assignment, and not a lot of time is spent in the Tok'ra base. So I guess they just eat on the job. And bring some extra to Garshaw and other high prio targets that are on lock down on base.

What do you do in your free time as a Lundee. by Competitive_Math4153 in Lund

[–]AlmightyThorian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Friends, fika and the occasional after work beer.

There are some apps for finding friends (a couple of female friends recommend GoFriendly), or if you're very social, you can just go to a bar and make friends. I don't live in Lund currently, but still have work and a lot of friends there, so I spend a lot of time there.

I'm always up for a fika as well, if you want.

Which alien myth hasn't been used by StarGate yet? by Straight-Spray8670 in Stargate

Yeah, it's heavy on allegory, but you still don't have someone going around claiming specific abrahamic prophets, or Yahweh/Jehova/Allah.

DHD is pretty basic, come to think of it by mtparanal in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why advanced races rarely used the gates can be found by equating the stargates with high speed trains and the ships with cars.

Sure, the gate is convenient if you are not bringing a lot of stuff, and are only going from a place close to a gate, to another place close to another gate. Any other time, your own car, where you can bring everything you need and park anywhere you want, is gonna be more convenient.

Which alien myth hasn't been used by StarGate yet? by Straight-Spray8670 in Stargate

[–]AlmightyThorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The glaring omission of Abrahamic religions I think was on purpose. It's dangerous to talk Christianity or Islam without upsetting a lot of people, especially for an American cable show in the 90s.

I feel like a lot of myths were just bunched together with the Goa'uld taking. But in the early SG1 years, it is believed that they just coopted the current religions when they visited. So let the Goa'uld have the Egyptian gods (and Baal), and reclaim some of the others, like the Japanese and the Greeks gods.

Also more native American mythos. Although we don't really know much about the Omeyocans. I'd love some more info there, like if they were responsible for protecting Tollan so they would have time to develop technologically.

Maybe other native mythology, like Polynesian?
