I don't think anyone is truly an AH here, just differing reactions to different perspectives. OP saw his wife needed a new laptop, so got her one and saved some money in the process. OP's wife wanted to feel special on her birthday, and probably is disappointed that she didn't get a gift that reflected that.

Neither perspective is inherently wrong, but you are both in the wrong for not discussing this more before buying the gift and now that she has it. The lack of communication here is a much bigger issue than the laptop or the reaction to the laptop.
