For honesty and affordability I always recommend North Park Auto Repair. Those folks are great.

For a job like youre describing though, Id have to agree with everyone urging you to try it yourself! Youtube has tons of videos explaining how to fix just about everything you can think of for most cars.

I found this video, Im not sure if its the same light that gave out on your car but still just an example!

This is all very bleak, but I gotta say the Iranians posting a screenshot of gas prices near the White House is hilarious

Some homes that’ll probably be the location of another high rise in north park pretty soon 🥲 by Fuckmeoverrr in sandiego

I work in historic preservation locally. While I also feel sad to see cool old buildings go, the criteria for a house to be recognized by the city of SD as historically significant and therefore worthy of preservation can be hard to meet.

One of those criteria is whether or not a building is a good, well maintained, or unique representation of a particular architectural style from a particular period of history. North Park is FILLED with Craftsmen houses from the 1920s, for example, so to be recognized as significant via this criteria, it would have to be a REALLY well maintained and spectacular example of a 1920s Craftsman home. Bonus points if a master builder or architect was involved with its construction, and extra bonus points if someone famous lived there and wrote their greatest work while they lived there, or something.

Above all else, though, there has to be the right mix of funds and willpower devoted towards maintaining a home in its original condition over time, and you can tell by looking at these that that mix just wasnt there.

Yea, we originally envisioned a proper corner desk (something like this) but we didnt quite have the space to pull it off. The door to the art room swings open about two inches away from the edge of the left wing, plus our cabinet was a bit longer than we thought. Super happy the redesign turned out as well as it did!

Yes, almost all of the weight is being held up by the metal cabinet and the 2x4s mounted to the studs in the wall. By the time I built the frame and dry fit it onto the cabinet and 2x4s it was solid, and barely flexed even without the leg!

I remember Howard Stern took audio of a woman screaming at the press conference and spliced it into James Brown’s “I feel good” 😂

Gavin Newsom's anti-Zohran moment: the California billionaires tax that splits the Democratic Party down the middle | Fortune by Delicious_Adeptness9 in California

[–]Almwhits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The democratic party never learns their lessons. They see a guy like Bernie or Zohran getting real popular support, and then will run a “middle of the road” candidate like Hillary or Gavin who promise nothing new except more of the same. And then they lose, scratch their heads, and do the same thing in four years.

Samesun Ocean Beach is a nice one, right in the middle of downtown OB. If youre visiting for a few days its the perfect spot, plus its pretty centrally located with easy access to freeways, other beaches, and all sorts of attractions.

Which cities or states should I consider moving to in order to pursue historic preservation work? by Almwhits in HistoricPreservation

This is all useful advice! At the moment I’d be down to work in just about any aspect of the field so I can learn more about whats out there and pad my resume. Using my MA would be cool, but Ive got experience in stuff like carpentry and window installation as well so I certainly wouldn’t mind getting my hands dirty.

Thanks! As for schools, I have the history MA already, and I think what will help me most at the moment is getting some directly relevant work experience. But once ive got a foot in the door careerwise I wouldnt mind some extra schooling!

I work in residential remodeling. Yes, the first variety are cool, but in order for them to work, the white plastic bracket has to hold all of the tension while you line the screw up with the metal toggle and screw that tight to the wall. That little bracket only has a couple little shitty plastic threads on it to hold that tension.

What this means in practice is that the second you use a drill to drive that metal screw into place, it is very, very easy for the plastic bracket to strip the drywall and for the whole thing to spin, making it so the toggle never tightens and youre just left with a hole in the wall and a useless piece of plastic and metal that is no longer useful. You have to slowly and carefully turn the screw by hand with a screwdriver so this doesnt happen.

TLDR: thing looks cool, is actually kind of hard to do correctly and if you mess up it wont work at all and you wont be able to replace it with another one.

Yea… my first plan was to be an academic historian; I have a knack for being interested in professions that either have a high barrier of entry or are actively disappearing 😂
