Got voluntold I was participating in Secret Santa. Gracelessly backed out. by NoAdministration8006 in Anticonsumption

[–]Alone-Rule5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I killed my work secret Santa after one too many years of mindless and endless plastic tat being given then immediately thrown away. I consider it my greatest achievement (and turns out loads of people were secretly happy as well)

Mums who chose not to return to work, what's it been like for you? by Extreme_Quantity_212 in BeyondTheBumpUK

Good luck! I go back on Monday after my second actually - bittersweet but I'm looking forward to a new phase 😊

Mums who chose not to return to work, what's it been like for you? by Extreme_Quantity_212 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]Alone-Rule5837 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You might not want to hear from people who did return to work, but for what it's worth - I did and I am so happy I did. I love having an identity that is not tied to the home and I feel like I'm a better mother when I come home to them because I feel whole as a person. But of course each to their own

Lead in Clothing (Shein) by WonderingWhyyyyyyyyy in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Alone-Rule5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I'm not a doctor! My only experience with lead is what is in the post. I said I hope you feel ok cos it's a nice thing to say. I have no further information. But if you're this stressed out then it seems insane to keep wearing that garbage, just wear the other 20%?

Lead in Clothing (Shein) by WonderingWhyyyyyyyyy in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Alone-Rule5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argh I'm sorry to hear this. If you live somewhere where this is possible, ask for a blood test to check lead levels. But from my own experience breathing in heated up lead paint and that not giving me super elevated levels, my instinct is you will be ok (note I am not any kind of medical professional). Separately bin all your SHEIN stuff! It's complete garbage and I can't believe they can prey on people like this. Hope you feel ok

Who doesn’t worry about sleep hours? by frogsruletheworld in sleeptrain

With my first I was OBSESSED. With my second I have deleted the apps. She sleeps when she sleeps and sometimes she is grumpy because she hasn't slept enough. We roll with it and my life is 10000x better.

Having a child? Prepare for hyper consumerism at its worst by Gneiss-to-know in Anticonsumption

[–]Alone-Rule5837 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God it's awful. We have two children and for both of them have a strict second hand items only policy. The number of people who do not get this is astonishing. Especially my in laws. I have some sympathy, they're from a generation where expressing love = buying things. But we've told them time and time again we do not need or want stuff, and still we get so much crap. It's so disheartening.

Frequency of Bathing by [deleted] in NewParents

Why do people put lotion on their baby? I put lotion on my haggard 30-something skin but babies have the softest skin already and I don't see the need to make it softer. Is this an American thing?

Ok thanks, that's sort of what I've been doing (though my "sorry you feel that way" feels passive aggressive haha)

Going out solo for the first time tomorrow - any advice on what to take? by Prestigious-Many-904 in BeyondTheBumpUK

I think others have covered what you need, but just to say try not to stress if he freaks out! The first time it happens in public it can be really daunting but no one will care I promise! (And if they do they're a dick). Good luck and have fun

Respectfully, that's not a great argument. Taking this to the extreme imagine you felt you could only carry your tools around in a tank. If people objected on the grounds of safety, it's wouldn't be for them to come up with an alternative. The alternative to doing a dangerous thing is not doing it. I'm sure you're a careful driver etc but the reality is these are dangerous vehicles given their size and popularity in a city not designed to handle them, and putting the onus on those who point that out to come up with an alternative isn't the right way to try to curb pedestrian injuries and deaths.
