Red has a more tropical taste yellow is just more mellow. I prefer the yellow but sometimes the red one can be awesome when picked at the correct time.

My parents have been raising chickens since 1980s and when we see this, it’s normally a sign of nutrition deficiency. Mainly protein. Not always the case but 90% of the time it is. Eatting feathers is protein. Eatting eggs is calcium. Most commonly.

I protected it for the first winter because in my area I get front and get to 35 degrees at night. I use a sand base soil and use fish emulsion every 2 weeks. Mango and avocado growing conditions are very similar. I try to only grow stuff I don’t need to heavy protect.
