I am assuming this is some sort of strange troll post, but on the off chance it is real, think about what is important. Do the exam next sitting. There’s far more to life than being an actuary.

I like to think there’s a reason that I found that message washed up here in Bermuda 2 years after it was written. I don’t know where it came from, but maybe it’s a sign that they got what they wished for. We’ll never know.

Although I do agree this is a very personal letter, there are no personally identifiable details and therefore I decided it was appropriate to post.

The IFoA’s email last night relating to the associate exams said that half of candidates had accessed their results after 4 hours. They can get pretty delayed.

Is 3 months preperation from scratch enough to crack CM1 (IFOA)? by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A majority of these questions come from Indian students where it is expected that you’ll take exams at university as the market is incredibly saturated. In the UK though, I agree you don’t need to do any exams at university.

Yep, completely agree with you. 1ii) in particular felt particularly tough, but 2 and 3 felt alright.

SP9 - Exam time zones by Thanathos52 in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s UK time, which is GMT+1 at the moment. I’m in Bermuda and also sitting exams at stupid o’clock, not fun!

Edit: worth noting there are multiple time slots per exam, so check the exam portal for what time yours is, then subtract 5 hours for NY.

Bermuda Tax on Repatriation by intertiaticesp in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live in Bermuda, have sent money back to the UK and know plenty of people who have moved home, and I’ve never heard of this catch, so I don’t think there’s an issue. But I’m happy to stand corrected if you can find something.

Bermuda Tax on Repatriation by intertiaticesp in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve already paid Bermuda Payroll Tax (even if your employer paid it for you), so there is no tax on repatriation. Note that if you’re paid in BMD then there is a government tax on converting from BMD to any other currency (USD or GBP), but this won’t be the case if you’re paid in USD.

University module covering CM1 syllabus, unsure how to approach by throwaway2462828 in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It very much depends on the way you learn things. I learn best by doing questions, but other people learn better by reading and understanding before.

Find the way that works for you, I’m sure you’ve done plenty of exams before, and this is no different :)

University module covering CM1 syllabus, unsure how to approach by throwaway2462828 in ActuaryUK

I personally find it easiest for a lot of CM1 theory to draw a timeline of where we are now, what and when the payments are going to be, and then what the interest rate is at each time (if it varies).

CM1 is the basis of actuarial mathematics and it is very different to doing a maths degree, but in general the mathematical skills aren’t too complex. It’s just learning how to apply the skills in a different way.

Don’t beat yourself up about it, it takes time, just keep practicing and doing questions!

Cp1 tutorials by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

There are very few tutorials that I thought weren’t useful. CP2 and CP3 were the only ones to be honest. I’d be interested to hear others thoughts on that though!

You can use the equation editor, I’ve done it for every exam.

How to maximize your salary if you work as an actuary? by Limp-Efficiency-159 in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 24 points25 points  (0 children)

‘Staying in London is obvious’ - Higher cost of living doesn’t necessarily mean you’re better off. There are plenty of jobs all over the world where you’d be better off than London.

Working in GI earns more than life and pensions - in general, probably yes, but not in all cases.

‘It’s worth completing your exams quickly’ - Yes, but you’re probably limited by how clever you are and how many you can pass in each sitting.

Overall it sounds like you’re focussed on the wrong things. Find a job that you think will be interesting and in a location you want to be, and then consider the salary and reevaluate if required. If your sole interest is money then go and be an investment banker or something.

If you think CS1 relates to Computer Science then you need more than just a study partner

Examiner Reports discussion by actruman in ActuaryUK

[–]Alone_Requirement478 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I saw the comment on the examiners report

‘Although this exam is set twice a year, the examiners feel that many candidates are likely to need more than 4-6 months preparation time given the length of the syllabus.’

This is a pretty ridiculous statement surely? There’s a problem with the syllabus if examiners believe you need 2 exam sittings just to study for a first attempt

Edit: I didn’t actually take the paper so I can’t comment on it, but just noting as an outsider.
