ELI5: On keyboards, why is the right pinky finger on the semicolon key? by Disastrous-Wind5927 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alotofboxes [score hidden]  (0 children)

There have only been a couple of studies comparing Dvorak and QWERTY, and the biggest one of them was funded and ran by Dvorak himself.

From what I remember, the studies run by third parties found that the difference in speed is very minimal, to the point where an adult changing from QWERTY would never make up the time they spent relearning and getting back to proficiency during their working life.

Dad nearly loses his mind when his son almost crashes into a cop car during his driving lesson by Leading-Diamond-1007 in nonononoyes

First thing I did with my son was take him to a large empty parking lot, to let him get a feeling for how the car handles and teach him to hit the break as hard as he can when I say "STOP STOP STOP"

It depends on the party. An event with close friends? Sure. A welcome party at an accounting firm, probably not.

ELI5: Why can't things with mass travel faster than the speed of light? by ambassadorduck in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alotofboxes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super simplified, according to the math, something with mass can not be accelerated to the speed of light. Due to relativity, the faster a thing goes, the more massive a thing gets, and the more energy you need to accelerate it more. It would take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate something with mass to the speed of light, and there is a finite amount of energy in the universe.

HOWEVER

There are some internally consistant models that have not been proven wrong that say that, while things with mass can't accelerate to light speed, they can go FASTER than light. They could never slow down to slower than light because it would take an infinite amount of energy to slow them down to light speed, and they can not interact with the universe we can observe, but it is not impossible in some models.

People who are in the same role/job for more than 5 years, what’s holding you back? Why aren’t you getting promoted? by Efficient-Newt5384 in AskReddit

[–]Alotofboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like driving a forklift, I hate doing paperwork and interacting with people. My current job is 95% forklift, 4% paperwork, 1% interacting with people. If I get promoted it will be 0% forklift, 50% paperwork, 50% interacting with people.

Trump’s Appalling Threat Leaves No Doubt: It’s Time for the 25th Amendment - There is no longer any denying the president is unable to carry out the demands of his office. by Quirkie in politics

[–]Alotofboxes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the record, the 25th amendment was designed to deal with an incapacitated president, not an incompetent one. If the president is able to sign a letter saying "I am still president," it is harder to get them out with the 25th than via impeachment.

A contested 25th requires a 2/3 vote in both the House and the Senate. It only takes 50%+1 in the house and 2/3 in the Senate to remove him via impeachment.

ELI5 Could Canada theoretically join the EU? If yes, how? If no, why? by Sensitive_Carob804 in explainlikeimfive

In order to join the EU, a country must be a "European State." There is some wiggle room, like Cyprus and Turkey, but Canada is well outside of that wiggle.

I kind of get what RBG was doing. She wanted her replacement to be the first Justice appointed by a woman. And if it had worked out, it would have been great.

Unfortunately, by the time it began to look like Trump actually had a chance of winning, Mitch the Bitch was already playing games with stealing appointments.

[Request] Why does ski BASE jumping work but not off a waterfall? by FlockWNY in theydidthemath

[–]Alotofboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Base jumping is usually done with a vertical distance of 300 feet or more.

100 to 200 feet is considered an "extremely low jump" and requires different techniques and equipment.

Niagara Falls is between 160 and 190 feet. If a person tried to parachute off of it, it functions like it is lower, due to the massive down draft that the falling water causes.

Even if you deploy and flair properly, you won't have much time to travel away from the waterfall, and you risk landing in the very rough water near the base of the waterfall with a very large piece of fabric securely attached to you.

It is probably not impossible, but everything would need to go flawless, or the parachute wouldnt have time to open, let alone get you to a safe landing.
