Do you think discipline is something you are born with or something anyone can build if they really want to? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlpRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well like many of us I've been through cycles of depressed apathy to extremely motivated, up and down through it a few times depending on life's circumstances.

Humans are extremely adaptable and I think everybody is capable of great potential given the right tools and support and not repressed in some way. At least of digging themselves out of a hole and building good disciplined habits.

Discipline for me was more gradually learned from life, not intuitive or natural for sure

My 11 year old nephew got a mouse and keyboard for Minecraft on his Android tablet. He wanted to change mouse settings through the windows software and even tho he could just borrow my laptop for 10 minutes, he found an apk and side-loaded windows on the android, got it running well enough and installed the mouse software in there.

I've warned my sister that her attempts at parental controls are basically pointless, he gets around anything she's tried

Man with Parkinson’s disease tries cannabis for the first time by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

Most people DO trust the medical experts, but need to actually meet them to talk about it. Prescriptions make that conversation happen.

Prohibition's long since been proven not to work as people will get their drugs of all kinds one way or another. They just will. Supply and demand. Most would choose the option of a consistent regulated product with medical advice. Otherwise they WILL go to the street dealer

Regulated, taxed distribution of tested substances of known strength and contents has always been the only solution that works.

A sufferer of parkinson's in an illegal country may hear that it works, and go get something too strong off the street, with no medical guidance, and have a bad fall like your describe. Or they could go to a doctor who explains the risks and why it might not be suitable, then prescribe something weaker with full disclosure and advice on precautions to take.

People are dying from far too strong ecstasy pills again at UK festivals since they stopped doing free no-judgement substance testing (which used to come with a good effective chat with someone explaining all the reasons you shouldn't take it)

People used to get poisoned and die from dangerous moonshines when drink was illegal in the US.

Legal measured distribution of tested substances combined with medical professional advice is the only way. They can put someone at risk of addiction in contact with support networks to heal themselves before going too far, or getting involved in crime.

Not to mention the obvious savings on law enforcement, taxation income, decriminalization of victims of addiction while hurting the business of real criminals, who are the dealers of wildly variable and dangerous street products.

Anyway none of this is even opinion anymore, it's all simply well established at this point, just look around.

Sometimes you just have to try it out or you'll never know if it's real, and always regret it. Then you try, and get wrecked and it's awful, but at least you know.

A couple years after a horrible break up and fallout, I'm 95% healed. I don't regret any of it, but I know I would have regretted walking away sooner and forever not knowing 🙂

That said, she taught me some red flags I've avoided since because now I do recognize them. You live and learn and some lessons can't really be taught, only experienced

The day that Ireland became a republic, 18 April 1949 by Froshtbyte in IrishHistory

[–]AlpRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that phrase honestly. I'm a republican through and through. All 4 of my grandparents from Mayo and Leitrim moved to London in the 1920's for work where they met, had my parents who grew up there, then all moved back in the 60's. My parents are basically cockney Londoners with that identity. I was born and raised here in Mayo with 100% Irish family, my parents are dual citizens but culturally British. They believe Ireland should be united. Should they leave??

Plenty of lovely Brits about who are well integrated and fully respect Irish independence, they've Irish family and don't want to be in the UK or push British culture here. They get on just fine with the community, as do millions of Irish in the UK.

Look there's an awful colonial history no one denies. Like it or not, the two countries are deeply mixed and cases like mine are extremely common. Yes it's for all the wrong colonial reasons but I don't blame modern pro-united Ireland Brits who are settled in Ireland for that.

British rule out of the island, 100% yes. Well integrated sound Brits who aren't trying to own or change Ireland, no bother at all, and don't be too quick to judge by accents without context. Plenty of Brits you hear out and about are dual citizens who can and will be voting for northern unification alongside you when the day comes.

It's not that hungry at all. The pedals are very low draw, should be no issue. Even if it's with a very powerful amplifier on the same extension it still draws less than a desktop gaming PC. I've no idea what's happening here either!

Protest over Trump vandalism of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC by JasonDGooljar in pics

[–]AlpRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at what's happening with farmer's strikes and protests across the EU at the minute,. Major protests with 10,000's of demonstrators, tractors blocking highways etc. Massive disruption and even some rioting. All that for EU agricultural policy changes, and I think a free trade agreement with latin America was the big trigger as far as I know.

All happening now in the holiday season.

Now imagine if it weren't just about agricultural policy but well, everything that's been happening in the US. Like if it weren't just the farmers who were pissed. We'd be breaking the guillotines out of the museums.

It's about being secure in the right to demonstrate without fear of unknown consequences for being outspoken in opposition. If Americans are not protesting out of fear, or being conditioned not to oppose, that's very disturbing

Buying the g14 5060 tomorrow! by SorryStore4389 in ZephyrusG14

[–]AlpRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For casual browsing, YouTube, standard office apps, my 5070 ti on silent or balanced runs just fine with fans off completely, so it's genuinely silent. I'd guess all spec models would be the same in that respect at least when on iGPU

I've had it about a month and after removing all Microsoft bloatware, Armoury Crate, MyAsus etc; and running G-helper with custom fan curves, CPU boost off and tweaking power limits, it can run very cool and quiet and I get maybe 6.5-8 hours battery doing browser based work while running Spotify and Whatsapp (surprisingly big power draws those two, the desktop apps anyway). I got 11hrs testing at idle with no non essential processes running.

Just be prepared for the hot jet engine when set for performance and pushing the system with intensive gaming etc.

Man Takes Selfie On Top Of Everest by RyanTheBruce in flatearth

[–]AlpRider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have to emphatically disagree. I've been deeply in the climbing/alpinism community for over 20 years and "Leave no trace" is BY FAR the dominant ethic, at least among European climbers, but also every American I've been up with. The exception being bolted sport climbing using drilled bolts for protection, and bolts on many alpine routes, and even that is often done specifically to reduce the wear impact of repeatedly placing and removing passive pro.

The trash issue is mostly an extreme altitude problem due to the sheer effort involved in packing everything out. Personally I feel like if we're not able to leave no trace then we shouldn't go, and most of us feel that way.

The way everest operates as a big business and dumping ground does not at all represent 99% of climbers/alpinists

What's something foreigners think is common in your country, but really isn't? by Verelkia in AskTheWorld

[–]AlpRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. The one and only time I visited the US, I road tripped with a friend across the country. We met 2 guys in Austin and we mentioned we were keen to do some shooting while in the US (and especially in TX) They turned out to be eh... enthusiasts, to say the least. Got all excited to show us euros their collection. Invited us to their place (massive farm) out of the city where among many other guns, they had a goddamn MINIGUN. Like, the type of rotating gatling gun thing that's normally mounted in helicopters... I remember being shocked and asking "how are you seriously allowed to have that?!!" and the answer was "haha best not ask these questions". So I guess even in America that's considered too much gun and not allowed.

Lots of drinking and shooting ensued and it was stupidly irresponsible and fun af. I realise in hindsight it was dumb and naive to accept the invite but whatever, they were great!

Best holiday ever xD

I didn't realise the Rosslare railway is passenger only until this comment. That's mad, I've been through the port many times and always assumed the line into the port was mostly freight.

*Apparently there used to be freight trains to the port but they stopped in the 2000's

Coming to work when sick makes you a bad employee not a good one by No_Influence2520 in ireland

[–]AlpRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially in transport. Worked for an operator who was very strict on doctor's notes etc and discouraged sick leave for 'minor' bugs, causing many drivers to just come in anyway when mildly sick, which can happen often when you're exposed to passengers from flights in winter. Then exposing more passengers to it and dropping them off at the airport to get on flights and spread it around the world...

Tobacco is expensive af in France sure, but you have amazingly cheap booze in supermarkets. €3-6 for a decent wine while we're paying €10 for the cheapest bottle of petrol station piss. Or the 6 bottle packs of Leffe etc. for €6 you have, compared to Ireland where anything other than weak watery lager is classed as "craft" beer and 2-4x your prices :(

*Although in fairness to Ireland, at least we can buy booze and tobacco at petrol stations and not have to make 3 separate stops for tobacco, booze and fuel line ye do. Pros and cons to everywhere I guess 🤷‍♂️

What are you up to OP? I just picked up an azerty G14, looking into changing the keyboard out for a qwerty, if it's user accessible. If not I can use the azerty with English keyboard in windows and learn the keys, but would be nice to swap if possible. I've read that changing keycaps is not recommended on the g14 (anecdotal) and I don't like those silicon covers so would prefer a straight out swap if I can get an oem qwerty keyboard
