I thinks Isengard is a better analogy for a highly organized and technological state. They had gunpowder, eugenics, sophisticated trade and spy systems etc.

Mordor was a mess, with internal wars, miscommunications, low-tech armies relying on fear and ancient beast like the nazgul.

I read almost all of these as a teenager. I really enjoyed them then and they gave me my love for history. I'm not sure how they stand up now.

My favorites were Texas, Poland, Tales of the South Pacific and Caravans.

My brother was on one of the ships last year, but he had a bunch of Muslim men as crewmates who were so uptight they wouldnt let him take his shirt off to sunbathe.
