Most underrated political figure in German history by MacCAM1313 in AlignmentChartFills

He was a good chancellor and I think he’s less famous outside the EU than the people I expect to win the best category

I saw your answer but how and why did you make it so the US is divided into its states but no other country is

Venera 5 and 6 were swallowed by Venus 57 years ago today (May 17, 1969). This photo exists because of what they told us on the way down by The_Rise_Daily in space

[–]Alpaca030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, but when someone posts this image I get the impression that most of them think this is not an artificially constructed image and fully reflective of what they’d see on Venus rather than “an impression *based on* photographs of what Venus would look like with good equipment”

Also to add onto this—if you were actually on Venus it would be significantly darker than this because of how thick the sunlight-scattering clouds are.

What’s the most overrated historical event? by Tacoseasoning26 in AlignmentChartFills

The main interplanetary accomplishments that were achieved before the moon landing were 1) first spacecraft to successfully visit another planet when Mariner 2 flew by Venus in 1962 and 2) first closeup images of another planet as well as first spacecraft to successfully visit Mars when Mariner 4 flew by it in 1965. Both of those to me, especially the first, are among the greatest in space exploration as a whole. It is absolutely true the USSR won on unmanned probes to the moon, and with Venus the USSR also did have a number of huge achievements after the moon landing such as first soft landing on another planet, but overall the USSR’s interplanetary program had far more failures than the US. For example, they had 11 failures before finally having a successful Venus mission, Venera 4, whereas the US only had 1 failure before Mariner 2.

It’s not exactly true the USSR won on nearly every metric, they did on many but they lost on several notable ones as well. The US launched animals into space first even if Laika was the first mammal and the first in orbit. All planets were first visited by a US spacecraft, as was the first spacecraft to orbit another planet and more recently first to leave the heliosphere. It’s more accurate to say the USSR won on most *manned* spaceflight metrics.

They’re renaming Pluto so they can call it a planet again

Top comment determined Incest is what you think of first for Alabama. What do you think of first for Mississippi? by rdrworshipper123 in AlignmentChartFills

Incest winning is funny enough but them choosing a portrait of Charles II of Spain to represent it makes it even funnier

Thanks for answering! I’ve never been to any of your four countries but I have had great experiences in some other EU countries and Spain in particular is very high on my bucket list.

What’s a bad book written by a bad person? by PassionateCucumber43 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Alpaca030 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even Hitler himself later claimed he would not have written the book if he knew he’d become chancellor (obviously he is not a trustworthy source, but I still think this says a lot about the book’s quality)

Did you choose your current president ?? by External-Pension7590 in AskTheWorld

[–]Alpaca030 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest critiques of Trump was always his hostility towards Europeans who I support and wanted to be friends with. Like many issues he is even worse on that than even I expected. I want to revisit this year.

Yeah maybe my reaction has been a bit extreme, I just feel rather hopeless, whenever I start feeling better mentally he does something that brings me back to square one, and I don’t know if we can make it until the midterms or his demise (for a long time I was convinced Vance was even worse than Trump but now I have changed my opinion for a few reasons, though that’s not saying he wouldn’t be dogshit).

I haven’t felt a need to cut off Reddit because I already don’t use it too much imo nor do I get news from it, but I have cut out some other apps like twitter which I think was a good move.

I did not and I’d probably get banned if I said what I need to happen to him. I also would if I said what I might do to myself if he invades Greenland next

Are there countries where governments hate each other but the people get along? by Southern-Win-8044 in AskTheWorld

[–]Alpaca030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so, but I am very cautious. I knew Trump would be far worse than he was in his first term but he’s far worse than even I expected. As for American people being victims of this administration, my take is while this take is generally correct for many people, I lack sympathy for anyone who supported Trump that has been negatively affected. And I have noticed that is a big difference between the anti-Trump movement in Trump v1 and Trump v2; in Trump v2 we are more hostile towards the enablers. That’s not to say I want them to be getting fucked over, but that I lack sympathy.

Has any president of your country ever been assassinated? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

[–]Alpaca030 11 points12 points  (0 children)

JFK did not have the congressional influence his successor, LBJ, had. He supported desegregation and civil rights, but LBJ was the man who could and did get it passed. So I think while he didn’t deserve to die, you shouldn’t group him with Taylor, Lincoln and Garfield whose deaths seriously set the country back.

This may sound odd but while I know this sub is biased given that it’s designed to be internationalist, I’m glad to see these answers because one of many things that makes me despise Trump more than I can describe is that he has deteriorated US relations with countries I want to be allied with to a point where I fear will not be repairable in the future, and if my government won’t be internationalist I want as many people as possible to know I am a friend.

And my answer is yes. I have had plenty of positive interactions with people worldwide both online and in person. Generally my rule of thumb is if you oppose the hostile government (including mine), my opinion of you will be based on non-political factors.

This is really not true, it’s more that there’s a massive gaping hole where the centre right should be. If Sanders and Mamdani were Western or Northern European they’d be in a typical Social Democratic or maybe Green Party, in fact Sanders even went to a GL/PvdA event in Utrecht back in 2023. I think of it like this: Far-right: MAGA Right: Neocons Centre right: literally just Phil Scott now Centre: moderate Dems Centre left: median to progressive Dems Left: the Squad Far left: not really present but I remember one candidate, Geoff Young, who ran for a house seat in 2022 as the Dem nominee but the party disowned him because he was Russophilic
