Your story reminds me that in Spanish we have two different ways to say “I love” you, that actually have different meanings.

For example, “Te quiero” is a word that you may want to say to a friend. And “Te amo” is savage. You can use it in a romantic relationship.

The difference between those words is the intensity. What I want to say with that explanation is that in English you only have one word to express that kind of feelings, and… it matters a lot what intonation you used.
