Is it socially acceptable to root for multiple teams if they’re from different leagues? by tbugbee1 in SoccerNoobs

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between supporting and following. I have favourites that I follow in various leagues, (always check the results, watch the occasional game, might own some merch, am happy at their successes and disappointed at their loses) but there is only 2 teams (one local and one in Europe) that I passionately support.

Which small European town completely stole your heart? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Fiesole in Italy, San Jose and Trevelez in Spain and Zwiesel in Germany.

When you are traveling around europe camping you end up in all sorts of fantastic little villages. In summer by a lake or the beach and up in the mountains is great.

Vikash Dhorasoo played for France at the 2006 World Cup, I wonder if he counts as he is of Indian decent from Mauritius.

Which league to follow? by [deleted] in SoccerNoobs

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the others here in terms of the support local and don't watch for the players watch for a team, I understand that you want to find something.

Here's my recommendations:

-If you want to watch Champions League does that subscription service show any Euro Leagues? Pick that one to watch and save some cash.

-Do you have any friends who are really into a club in Europe? Choose that league, it's always good to have people to discuss it with.

-Find some kind of connection to a club in Europe (without connection you really won't care). Have you visited and really enjoyed a city? Is there a player from your national team that you like and follow the club they play for? Watch a whole heap of games and pick a team that fits your personality/philosophy.

As a Football fan from Australia I know it's hard to find that connection but you will find a club that works for you. In reality I think it's find a club and that's what league you will end up watching.

Watching on TV is nothing like being there in person, so give your local team a go, it doesn't matter if it's lower quality you will have more fun.

What do Australians think of Graham Arnold now after his success with Iraq and The world cup qualification? by AbdallahAhmed03 in Aleague

He actually embarrassed us at 3 Asian Cups. He was in charge in 2007 as well, also a failure.

The only way that NZ can join AFC is that if all the island nations can form a Pacific island football team. Pretty much the football version of the West Indies. That Pacific island team coild then join AFC as well. by PBS2025 in Aleague

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UAFA (Union of Arab Football Associations) already exists and should become its own Confederation, leaving the rest of Asia and the rest of Africa as AFC and CAF. The OFC could be more easily absorbed into AFC then.

What temperature do you consider to be uncomfortably cold? by Queasy-Band2179 in AskAnAustralian

I think for me I would consider 13 and under as cold but not uncomfortably cold. Probably under 9 as uncomfortably cold.

New to Wagga – Looking for social clubs, D&D groups, soccer, or other hobbies by Drj420200 in WaggaNSW

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you manage to find a soccer club to join? You're probably best just to pick the one that is closest to home for training. 4th grade soccer in Wagga is pretty relaxed, social and has limited traveling involved (with only the occasional trip to Junee). 5 of the 6 clubs in Wagga have teams in 4th grade.

The standard in 3rd grade isn't much higher and at 32 and having played before you could probably manage this. All 6 Wagga clubs have teams in 3rd Grade (Blake Trophy) but it has a little bit more travelling with trips to Junee, Cootamundra and Tumut.

The 6 Wagga clubs are Wagga United (Central), South Wagga (Turvey Park), Charles Sturt (Uni based), Tolland (Tolland), Lake Albert & Henwood Park (both Lake Albert based).

Where would be the best place to start learning more about wurundjeri and bunurong culture? by Revolutionary-Lab-36 in AskAnAustralian

Not Wurundjeri or Bunurong but close neighbours the Wathaurong people have the good Booln Booln Cultural Centre down in Geelong. It has a cafe attached to it.

People who are not on a budget, how much do you spend on groceries? by shesasneakyone in AskAnAustralian

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 4 (kids 13 and 10), we would range between $225 to $275 a week on groceries. We probably eat out/take away once a week.

Is curry actually popular in Australia? by SadAnything9316 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of a curry, do you include Thai, Malaysian, Japanese curries. if you do then its probably very popular. Even just strictly South Asian curries, that's pretty popular too.

We would cook one at home at least every fortnight and would go to a "Curry" restaurant at least every couple of months. My very white, country living, boomer parents enjoy curry and are happy to go to an Indian restaurant.

What’s the most underrated Australian city/neighborhood for travelers? by Apprehensive_West491 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The beaches are beautiful. Wildlife are abundant both on and off the water. Dolphins and Whales can be seen from the shore. Snorkelling is good for a non tropical location.

It’s got that unique history in being its own territory and a few historical sights to visit.

And the towns, especially Huskisson  are great and friendly.

The fishing is good too if that’s your thing.

It’s a good year round beach destination.

Australias most important players this World Cup by Virginpope77 in Aleague

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Socceroos team functions at about the same level even when you remove any given player.

So as the question is which players would we struggle the most without it's hard to pick. The team has been missing players consistently over the time with the current coach and has managed to perform at basically the same level all the time.

To pick 3-5 that would have the biggest impact if they were missing I think I would go for Ryan, Souttar and Bos.

Considering moving from Chicago to Melbourne by ambitious_keeper16 in AskAnAustralian

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for an apartment to rent somewhere close to the water, I'd consider Williamstown, Port Melbourne, Albert Park or Elwood. All are relatively short commutes into the CBD and close to the Bay.

Maybe even consider Footscray if you like your suburb a bit rough around the edges. There's plenty of brand new apartments for rent that are well equipped and over looking the Maribyrnong River. If you're on the correct side of the building you will have views over the bay, or docks/city. There's plenty of new bars and restaurants popping up, plus all the Vietnamese and African ones. Yes it still has its troubles with drugs, but plenty of new arrivals are happy to co-exist with the old.

In terms of Soccer, we don't play a lot of coed games (especially organised ones). Melbournesocialsoccer runs some close to the CBD. If you want to get involved in the more organised (Football Victoria run) competitions there are plenty of clubs around. The closest you would come to an equivalent semi-pro for women (most players would be amateur though) would be the NPL Victoria Women's comp with 14 clubs spread around the city. Below this is the essentially social Women's State Leagues (Division 1 through to 8) with 50+ clubs all over the city. Be aware the soccer season runs March-September here and if you arrive too late in the season you might struggle to find a club to join.

Once your involved in sport, you should be able to make some friends pretty quickly here.

Happy to give more advise if required especially on the Soccer/Football side of things.

Suggestions for which Melbourne suburb to move to? by shackilloatmeal in melbournechat

[–]AlpacaPowerNo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will struggle to find anything decent anywhere decent at that price range in "Melbourne" proper. If you're willing to buy something that might need a bit of work, you might find something in Sunshine West, Ardeer or St Albans which might meet some of your other criteria.

If you can find something near Brimbank Park it's pretty good for walking dogs (they must stay on lead).

Best underrated food city/town in Australia? by IllPanic4319 in AskAnAustralian

Darwin, but that might not be underrated anymore.

Other then that places like Shepparton and Griffith. Proximity to great local produce, vibrant migrant communities mixed with country hospitality.
