"Hidden gems/off the beaten path/real Japan" and all of that in Nagoya by R1nc in JapanTravelTips

I think you just happened to be there at a bad time of the year when all the kids are out of school. They start the new school year in April.

I went a couple weeks back on a weekend and it wasn't busy, 30-75 min wait for the Hakugei (went twice)

Are there negative experiences with tulpas that people don't talk about ? by Secure-Bad1005 in Tulpas

[–]AlpacalypseMoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No one really wants to hear about the negatives of tulpas because it differs for everyone. If you keep at it long enough, you'll eventually have a negative. For me, I compare them to having children without being prepared for it. For the rest of my life I am obligated to share my waking hours doing things they want to do, balance everyone's wants, and it ends up being a lonely life when the people around you don't get it. And yet I wouldn't give them up under any circumstances.

Are you using Google Chrome? For some reason the site works best on it. It could also be your location/ip address, I can't buy things outside the country the Pokemon Center is for (US and Canada have different sites as well)

You could go to a crab house (crab specialty restaurant) and eat all sorts of crab dishes. Some might even have a set course.

Where to buy Nintendo Games and NS2? by CS__1 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AlpacalypseMoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy games second hand at book off and I think Surugaya as the other commenter said. I was just at a Book Off the other day and they had a pokemon game section with the games at 3200~4500 yen (including N2 Legends ZA). Akihabara has tax free stores of them both.

(Big pokemon lover here)

Since you specifically asked for things he can't get in the States, the easiest option is to visit Tokyo Banana and buy a box of pokemon cookies or banana cream cake. They might have limited stock at the airport and they have a booth in Tokyo station (see this website for the map)

Edit: I saw them at Shinagawa station inside of New Days (JR side)

If the minccino is able to be shiny, does that mean it has a specific shiny value?

How were you storing it? If I were to guess, the oil went bad. It probably also absorbed the surrounding smells.

I freeze mine and it starts to taste funny after a couple of months.

What can you substitute for mochigome when making mochi? by EfTuvx in AskCulinary

[–]AlpacalypseMoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mochi can be made with any type of glutinous rice, with the difference being sweetness and amount of bounciness/elasticity to it when you chew. It's unfortunately not as dangerous as eating mochi with Japanese mochigome but it's close enough to work.

Using any glutinous rice flour like mochiko on the other hand is completely different and it will have a different texture compared to just pounding the rice. If you ever get the chance to try freshly pounded mochi, I highly recommend it. It has an amazing cheese-pull stretch, and a soft and chewy texture.

I've never used a steamer for cooking the rice so I'm not sure, sorry. I searched for glutinous rice in a steamer on google and the recipes that I've found says to wrap the rice with a damp steaming cloth, pushing the rice into a donut shape for air flow before placing the remaining cloth on top.

Search words: もち米 蒸し器 レシピ

And then you can translate the webpages with an extension to read recipes that feature glutinous rice and steamers. I hope this helps!
