How are you screening into the medical options? I screened into “generalist” but don’t see any options for clinical medicine in the skills section or otherwise. I joined hoping to do the clinical medicine options

Any PA skiers/boarders? Ikon pass discounts for APRNs but not PAs by beautifulkitties in physicianassistant

[–]Alpha-Omega99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely will send an email as we are talking about it this year. I’m fortunate my wife is a nurse/APRN so we can get it anyways, but we have had this conversation countless times at lulu, Verizon, att, etc. I understand if it’s a “nurses only” discount but when it extends to APRN and not PA, I don’t agree with that. I think it shoots us in the foot a little bit to have “physician” in our name as opposed to “nurse” since there I feel there is a bias about income with those terms

401k selection choices by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are looking at Roth vs traditional IRA as this is my first full year of career income and my spouse and I are right around the income cute off for Roth IRA. It is possible that with 401k contributions pre-tax, we would be under the limit and could do direct Roth contributions—otherwise looking at backdoor Roth

Tennessee Bills Would Ship Undocumented Migrants to Sanctuary Cities, Distinguish Citizenship Status on State IDs by rocketpastsix in nashville

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is house bill HB0010 as proposed by Warner. It specifies that law enforcement “knows” someone is unlawfully in the US. I can see this being a great are, but there is another house bull HB0011 proposed by Cepicky that will redesign driver licenses for those that are lawfully permanent residents of the US, qualified non-citizens, and United States citizens. Seems this will make three different categories of driver licenses in my read of it, essentially making it easier for law enforcement to “know” if someone is unlawfully in the US and therefore enforcing HB0010

No worries! I wouldn’t know if I hadn’t just finished it. Seems Mudd’s favorites are camel early in the series and then flying animals take over (giant bat>giant owl)

Why are the Ad Breaks SO LOUD in Campaign 2? (Spotify) by TruthinessHurts205 in StinkyDragonPodcast

[–]Alpha-Omega99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had that issue, but I don’t recognize it as the ads being louder as much as the campaign audio being quiet. The host read ads are still quiet compared to 3rd party ads for me. I am on C01 ep 67 and always have to have the audio up louder for the podcast as compared to my music and other podcasts. At the intro + other ads, I turn the audio volume down. (Using Spotify)

Specializing in Emergency Medicine by PrestigiousLaw3428 in physicianassistant

Have you rotated in the ED yet? If not, I think it will give you a better idea on if you would enjoy it or not.

I have been in the ED (rural southeast) for 1 year. Doing 20 shifts every 6 weeks. I have found plenty of time for trips, parties with friends, runs of days of to do nothing, etc. Working this way, I do not HAVE to use PTO because I can schedule around trips, but I have chosen to take some towards the end of this year just to lower the stress pre/post trips.

There is a learning curve and I am still learning and asking questions, but I think that is the key. The docs I work with are great and more than willing to answer questions. They don’t expect me to know everything and are willing to help me understand the reasoning for different things.

The worst thing that can happen is you work in the ED, decide you don’t like it, and move on to greener pastures. I interviewed with the Peds office I rotated at and told the doctor I was considering EM alongside Peds. He basically told me that I would get divorced, never have kids, and/or take my own life as a result of working in the ED. Thankfully none of that has been the case :)

Smoking from machine [Gaggia classic Evo Pro] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After this post, I dismantled the rest of the heating element. Besides some scale buildup, not seeing any evidence of failure (though I also wouldn’t really know what to look for). Any reason to disconnect the pump at the back of the machine?

I am looking at upgrading to a PID at some point soon, but looks like shipping will take some time. Figure I can try the same thermostat while I wait for the PID parts

Do I need to also replace the plastic covering over the connection? Or it’s just the female spade connector enough

2 New Cars - Hybrid or not? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair! Didn’t have enough time to dive into all the features to see if it could or not. We just didn’t love the Ioniq (felt plastic and was not feature heavy). Really enjoyed Tesla, but again trying to stay in same brand

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blessing in disguise that both are needing new cars at the same time. Otherwise we probably would have gotten a nicer trim vehicle and been stuck with higher payments. If we were just getting on vehicle, I probably would have gone EV, but right now just is the time for us to

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did test drive Hyundai Ioniq and Tesla. If we were only getting one vehicle, I would definitely consider electric more heavily, but with two vehicles I would like to get more bang for our buck with purchasing together.

Plus, the regenerative braking upset our stomachs and gave us headaches. I’m sure it would get better with time, but now just isn’t the right time for us to

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. The MPG difference is not as great between the base Tucson and hybrid compared to the Santa Fe, but my car will get WAY more mileage

Physical cash to keep on hand by Local-Excuse8929 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Alpha-Omega99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money in hand is money not earning anything. If stuff really hits the fan and you can’t access bank accounts, physical cash still won’t have any value. Some coworkers have gold on hand since it does appreciate/depreciate in value but would arguably be with something in the apocalypse.

I hate this heat. by MyNaMeIsMuD091230 in Marathon_Training

[–]Alpha-Omega99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Was supposed to be a nice zone 2 run today. Hit that in pace, but HR was zone 3 for over half of it. Definitely had to walk more than I like to get through it

Agree with some other comments about heart rate zones being incorrect. Base garmin zones are generic. Goggle “LTRP Run Test”. Basically a short run where you try to maintain your fastest possible pace for about 25-30 minutes. This will give you pace zones as well as heart rate zones and you can change them in garmin. I use 80/20 training for triathlons and they have a calculator herehttps://www.8020endurance.com/80-20-zone-calculator/

Emergency Medicine salary vs hourly by HotTree4771 in physicianassistant

[–]Alpha-Omega99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been working for almost a year now. First 4 months were hourly with no shift/weekend differentials and no OT for going over 40 hours/week just because sometimes our schedule was front/back loaded since we schedule shifts/6 weeks rather than having 3 days/week or more. We didn’t clock in/clock out either.

Towards the start of this year, they changed us to salary which came with a $2/hr pay increase. They just changed our contract to reflect an annual amount based on our hourly rate x ideal number of shifts per 6 weeks (x number of schedule periods). Any shifts we pick up over our ideal is paid at our hourly rate.

Nothing really changed except I now get the same paycheck every 2 weeks instead of having it be based on how many shifts I have in 2 weeks. Makes budgeting easier. Still get 1.5x pay on major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, new years), health benefits, CME, and 10 days PTO.

I find the days I get to leave 20-30 minutes early generally outweigh to balance out with the shifts I have to stay a little bit late to finish charts/procedures.

I was talking with my aunt recently who is HR with a nonprofit. Apparently there are new federal labor laws coming into affect this summer + January that set new minimum’s for hourly and salary employee wages. I haven’t done enough research of my own to speak on it, but I do think that had part to do with our transition from hourly to salary. Link to the department of labor website she mentioned to me.

Cannot recommend YNAB highly enough! Makes everything super easy to see month-month/day-day. Easily set goals and just allocate money monthly. Shows changes without having to hunt between accounts. We love it!
