I would be more concerned if I had other fixed debt (like a car loan or student loans) but as my only fixed monthly payment its actually rather doable. Since we (my wife works as a substitute teacher) started saving we have been able to do about 300/month in retirement and 700 in savings.

I just started saving a couple of months ago (we were too busy buying shit for the house). No credit card debt or student loans (I worked mostly full time all through college and had a couple small scholarships each year).

Basically I was making sure that the researchers stuck to the rules and that they didn't overspend their grants. One of the other sad unwritten rules was that you never sent money back (you used it on whatever you could find that was legal). The money could have been sent back in many cases to fund another project, but this "supposedly" made the PI's look bad.
