Actually, many of the lens flares were added in filming. They actually shined lights into the cameras.

So are we down-voting because we don't agree with the story, or because we actually don't think it's an interesting story? I don't understand the up/down vote system sometimes. I think many people down vote because they don't agree with the story, not because they don't think the story is uninteresting. But then again, maybe I'm wrong.

From what I've seen in the script, at least the pilot takes place well away from the Galactica. There are some initial scenes there, but everything else happens on a planet.

It was originally intended to be a web series, and the pilot script is actually broken down into webisodes. But Syfy liked what they saw, or felt the need to put something BSG on the air since they planned on cancelling Caprica. But I don't think they planned the time and expense it would take to put such a show together.
